Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pen Pictures of Modern Authors Lected here, but a series of sketches, anecdotes, and personal reminiscences relating to the more modern authors - that is, the authors who are now living, or who have died very recently and whose work belongs to the present half of the century. As the book is a compilation, the editor has occasionally been hampered by want of available material, and if the reader misses any face which he would like to have seen in a gallery of this sort, he will understand that it is because no satisfactory pen picture could be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pen and Pencil Pictures From the Poets Here is a quiet Spirit in these woods, That dwells where'er the gentle south wind blows Where, underneath the white thorn, in the glade, The wild flowers bloom, or, kissing the soft air, $87 The leaves above their sunny palms outspread. With What a tender and impassioned voice It fills the nice and delicate ear Of thought, When the fast-ushering star of morning comes O'er-riding the gray hills with golden scarf Or when the Cowled and dusky-sandall'd Eve, In mourning weeds, from out the western gate, Departs with silent pace That spirit moves In the green valley, where the silver brook, From its full laver, pours the white cascade And, babbling 1ow amid the tangled woods, Slips down through moss-grown stones with endless laughter. And frequent, on the everlasting hills, Its feet go forth, when it doth wrap itself In all the dark embroidery of the storm, And Shouts the stern, strong wind. And here, amid The silent majesty of these deep woods. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Pen Drawings: European and American Britirb before practical success was achieved; and France was the winner, after all - for it was in 1848 that M. Gillot, the lithographer of Paris, began mechanical etching, or, as he called it, gravure panéconographique. Though fifty years have gone since then, Gillot 3 method remains in its essentials perfect for the reproduction of pen - and - ink work, for, as an expert has recently put it, the results obtained then were equal to those of the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Word Makers: Pen Pictures of the People Behind Our Language At my leisure I began a pursuit of these immortal personalities who are literally yours, but so often only in name. They offered a fascinating diversity and soon the spell of the chase was upon me and the interest quickened. Other writers and book lovers will, I hope, share my pleasure and increase the richness of their writing and reading by this gallery of pen pictures of men and women who have added life, if not always lustre, to our language. It would be simple to extend these sketches indefinitely; the scientists and mechanical inventors in particular have added a legion of names to our vocabulary. But in this book I have kept the accent upon literary allusions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the close connections between literary value and the materiality of popular print artefacts in Britain from 1890-1930. The book demonstrates that the materiality of print objects-paper quality, typography, spatial layout, use of illustrations, etc.-became uniquely visible and significant in these years, as a result of a widely perceived crisis in literary valuation. In a set of case studies, it analyses the relations between literary value, meaning, and textual materiality in print artefacts such as newspapers, magazines, and book genres-artefacts that gave form to both literary works and the journalistic content (critical essays, book reviews, celebrity profiles, and advertising) through which conflicting conceptions of literature took shape. In the process, it corrects two available misperceptions about reading in the period: that books were the default mode of reading, and that experimental modernism was the sole literary aesthetic that could usefully represent modern life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pen and the Book This book is written for the instruction and the guidance of those young persons, of whom there are now many thousands, who are thinking of the Literary Life. It is written for no other persons, and may therefore be considered as, in a sense, privately printed. After the devotion of over thirty years to this life, I may, perhaps, be allowed to have acquired some experience. During this long period I have been a writer of leading articles, a reviewer, a writer of literary studies, a writer of history and biography, a novelist and a dramatist. I have read for a publisher I have edited one archaeological sur vey, and I am engaged in directing another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Paintings as Seen and Described by Great Writers To present in a book of this size a gallery of modern paintings that would be entirely satisfactory is manifestly impossible, for it is needless to remind the reader that paint ing in the Nineteenth Century has undergone so many phases and developments that it would be out of the question even to include a specimen of every important school, much less to represent every famous master.
