Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pelagian controversy - whether man is saved through predestination or by his own free will - has proved one of the most enduring and fiercely contended issues of the Christian church, and has secured Pelagius a lasting place within its history. Few of Pelagius' writings, however, have been preserved, and until recently none was available in English translation. This volume presents Pelagius' commentary on Paul's Letter to the Romans for the first time in English. The commentary, one of thirteen on the Pauline Epistles, dates from the time when Pelagius was active in Rome, before he became embroiled in controversy. But already there are adumbrations of the later debate and signs of different currents of thought in Italy and beyond. In his introduction Theodore de Bruyn discusses the context in which Pelagius wrote the commentary and the issues which shaped his interpretation of Romans. He also takes up questions about the edition of the commentary. The translation is annotated with references to Pelagius' contemporaries. A new recension of Pelagius' text of Romans is presented in an appendix.

In addition to his importance as an interpreter of scripture, Ambrosiaster provides unique perspectives on many facets of Christian life in Rome, from the emergence of clerical celibacy to the development of liturgical practices to the subordination of women. Features An up-to-date overview of what is known about Ambrosiaster, the transmission of his commentary on the Pauline Epistles, his exegetical method, his theological orientation, and aspects of Christianity in Rome in the fourth century A scholarly translation of the final version of the commentary, along with notes that identify significant variants from prior versions of the commentary Bibliography thatincludes a comprehensive list of the scholarly literature on Ambrosiaster

Book excerpt: Plummer's concern is to let the message of Philippians speak for itself, often making reference to the original language when greater insight into the meaning of the passage can be gained. Plummer provides an excellent balance between exegesis and exposition, making this book a valuable tool for the study of Paul's letter to the Philippians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviving the ancient political wisdom of St. Augustine in combination with insights drawn from contemporary political theorist John Rawls, Joseph Rivera grapples with the polarizing nature of religion in the public square. Political theology, as a discipline, tends to argue that communitarianism remains the only viable political option for religious practitioners in a complex, pluralist society. Unsurprisingly, we are increasingly accustomed to think the religious voice is anti-secular and illiberal. On the contrary, Christian theology and political liberalism, Rivera argues, are not incompatible. Political Theology and Pluralism challenges the longstanding antithesis between theology and political liberalism by asking his readers to focus not on difference, but on our common humanity. Outlining real strategies for public dialogue in a liberal state, Rivera offers the opportunity to discover what it means to practice civic friendship in pluralist context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heretic is someone who disagrees with established wisdom. The word "dogma" is derived from the Greek word for "belief" or "opinion." And someone who is dogmatic tries to impose his opinion of "true belief" on others, labeling the other beliefs "only myth," and therefore not true. But a myth is a story to illustrate a belief. This book shows that every culture has a set of spiritual stories, each reflecting the culture of those who believe. Spiritually, we are climbing the same mountain; how we see the top depends on where we come from.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans The exposition of such a book is capable of boundless progress. In studying the Epistle to the Romans we feel ourselves at every word face to face with the unfathomable. Our experience is somewhat analogous to what we feel when contemplating the great masterpieces of mediaeval archi tecture, such, for example, as the Cathedral of Milan. We do not know which to admire most, the majesty of the whole or the finish of the details, and every look makes the discovery of some new perfection. And yet the excellence of the book with which we are about to be occupied should by no means discourage the expositor; it is much rather fitted to stimulate him. What book of the New Testament, says Meyer, in his preface to the fifth edition of his commentary, less entitles the expositor to spare his pains than this, the greatest and richest Of all the apostolic works? Only it must not be imagined that to master its meaning nothing more is needed than the philological analysis of the text, or even the theological study Of the contents. The true understanding of this masterpiece of the apostolic mind is reserved for those who approach it with the heart de scribed by Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount, the heart hungering and thirsting after righteousness. For what is the Epistle to the Romans 2 The offer Of the righteousness of God to the man who finds himself stripped by the law, of his own righteousness (i. To understand such a book we must yield ourselves to the current Of the intention under which it was dic tated. M. De Presseuse has called the great dogmatic works of the Middle Ages the cathedrals of thought. The Epistle to the Romans is the cathedral of the Christian faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans Of commentaries published since the first appearance of this work in 1877, I may mention that of Godet, published in 1879, '80, marked by keen insight into the apostle's meaning and great charm of style, but not always reliable in grammatical and critical details and that of Oltramare, published in 1881, '82, careful and scholarly, especially in grammar, but, as I think, less in harmony with the thought of Paul. These works we owe to French Switzerland, their writers having been professors at Lausanne and Geneva respectively.
