Während Vorfälle wie dieser fürchterliche Einzelfälle darstellen, sind alltägliche Konflikte wie Beschimpfungen, Prügeleien oder Lästereien im Schulleben an der Tagesordnung. In den letzten Jahren hat an vielen deutschen Schulen ein Verfahren Einzug gehalten, mit dem berechtigte Hoffnungen auf Möglichkeiten einer konstruktiven Konfliktbewältigung an Schulen verbunden sind: Die Peer-Mediation. So sind an Schulen im gesamten Bundesgebiet sogenannte „Streitschlichter-Programme“ entstanden. Der Einsatz von Peer-Mediation an Schulen ist eine Thematik, die mich schon während meines gesamten Studiums begleitet und interessiert. Bereits in meinen Schulpraktischen Studien an der Orientierungsstufe Himmelsthür habe ich im Rahmen von Hospitationen bei einer Streitschlichterausbildung erste Eindrücke und Erfahrungen in diesem Bereich sammeln können. Im Wintersemester 2003/2004 besuchte ich ein Seminar zur „Mediation“ bei Christiane Temme und Karen Gragert, die Lehrerinnen an der Robert-Bosch-Gesamtschule sind und dort Schüler zu Streitschlichtern ausbilden. Im Rahmen dieses Seminars habe ich das Konzept der Mediation kennengelernt und in Rollenspielen eigene Erfahrungen zur Rolle des Mediator machen können. Mein Interesse an der Mediation wuchs zunehmend, so dass im darauffolgenden Sommersemester ein Referat zur „Konfliktlösung und Mediation“ in einem Seminar zum „Fordern und Fördern“ übernommen habe.

Daraufhin folgen ein kurzer geschichtlicher Exkurs sowie einige weitere Informationen zum Thema Mediation und Gewalt. Ergänzend dazu befasst sich dieses Kapitel auch mit Gewalt an Schulen und präventiven Maßnahmen. Erklärungen zur Schul- und Peer-Mediation runden diesen ersten Teil ab. Nach den allgemeinen Betrachtungen werden im empirischen Teil, die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung dargestellt. Es erfolgt eine ausführliche Diskussion der Ergebnisse mit Stellungnahmen zur Untersuchung und dem Vergleich mit Evaluationsstudien und Erkenntnissen aus Literatur und Forschung. This report addresses these issues by building on the pioneering work of Robert Thorndike in 1973. Data are presented on the relative achievement levels of comparable samples of students in each of 32 school systems in all continents of the globe - making it the largest IEA study to date. Attempts are made to elucidate the reasons for the differences that were found and implications are drawn about the likely effects of different policies. Many advances have been made since the previous IEA reading survey, students were asked to tackle a wider range of reading exercises, prodigious efforts are made to minimise any cultural or linguistic biases, and the statistical machinery of the Rasch model was systematically used, for the first time in IEA surveys, both to help identify troublesome items and to create defensible international scales. Greater efforts are made in this study to assess the volume and character of students' reading, to explore their beliefs about learning to read, and to compare the effects of teachers' beliefs and instructional emphases on student achievement. Within each country specific findings have emerged which will give policy makers pause for thought and prompts for action.
