The little donkey learns quickly from the other donkeys, developing the skills he needs to escape and build a life for himself. On Pedro’s first day of work, attempting to carry a very fat and aggressive tourist, he struggles. He is too small and weak to carry the tourist’s weight. When the tourist abuses Pedro, he fights back. His mother begs him to run away and find a better life. He escapes, promising that he will return for her. Pedro meets a little girl while he is eating flowers outside a florist shop. She convinces her grandfather to let the donkey live with them. One day, Pedro stops a bank robbery. His fame as a hero brings him to the attention of his past owner, who wants his donkey back. Will Pedro be able to stay with his new friend, or will he have to return to his old life?

Book excerpt: "A searching memoir . . . A subtle, expertly written repudiation of the American dream in favor of something more inclusive and more realistic."—Kirkus, starred review There are many Pedros living in many Americas . . . One Pedro goes to a school where they take away his language. Another disappears in the desert, leaving behind only a backpack. A cousin Pedro comes to visit, awakening feelings that others are afraid to make plain. A rumored Pedro goes missing so completely it's as if he were never there. In Pedro's Theory Marcos Gonsalez explores the lives of these many Pedros, real and imagined. Several are the author himself, while others are strangers, lovers, archetypes, and the men he might have been in other circumstances. All are journeying to some sort of Promised Land, or hoping to discover an America of their own. With sparkling prose and cutting insights, this brilliant literary debut closes the gap between who the world sees in us and who we see in ourselves. Deeply personal yet inspiringly political, it also brings to life those selves that never get the chance to be seen at all.

This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rasmus Vangshardt offers an original interpretation of one of the most famous images of literary history, the theatrum mundi. By applying methods of comparative literature, hispanic studies, and theology, he reconsiders the world theatre’s historical peak in early modern Europe in general and the Spanish Golden Age in particular. The author presents a new close reading of Pedro Calderón’s El gran teatro del mundo (c. 1633–36) and outlines the historical and systematic framework for a theatrum mundi of celebration. This concept entails using art to justify human existence in the face of changing conceptions of the cosmos: an early modern aesthetic theodicy and a justification of the world in that liminal space between drama and ritual. By discussing historiographical theories of early modern Europe, especially those of Hans Blumenberg and Bruno Latour, and through conversations with Shakespearean drama and Spanish Golden Age classics, Vangshardt also argues that the theatrum mundi of celebration questions traditional assumptions of great divides between the Middle Ages and Early Modernity and challenges theories of a European-wide early modern sense of crisis.
