This study searched for such variables in physical environment, which can create and sustain such vibrancy in the context of urban commercial centers in Malaysia. With a method of observing pedestrian activity, and hypothesizing the intensity of people as the parameter of such vibrancy, this study adopted several key statistical methods to come up with some interesting findings. It showed that certain components of mixed land use patterns and streetscapes are significant to generate and sustain pedestrian vibrancy.

Book excerpt: Understanding how environmental attributes can influence the behavior of pedestrians is of concern for public health officials, transportation engineers, and urban planners. To what degree, if any, do these various environmental characteristics influence how much and for how long people walk? To answer these questions, this thesis analyzes large-scale spatiotemporal pedestrian activity records collected from the users of a mobile phone application in Greater Boston, Massachusetts and the San Francisco Bay Area, California. The dataset contains the locative traces of recreational and utilitarian pedestrian walking activities which include the GPS and temporal records of individuals. In sum, this dissertation considered over 2.2 million trips from 135,000 people. This thesis addresses the topic in three parts. The first study examines the impacts of climate and environment on active transportation trips, and finds varying effects of different types of weather. However, these associated effects are influenced by a trip's purpose, as well as by season and location. The second study analyzes the impact of built environment characteristics on walking activities at the urban scale. These characteristics are generally defined as components of the density, diversity, and design of urban spaces. The study finds that activity characteristics are moderated by the features of location, and that infrastructure for walking, transportation access, and destinations have a positive influence on walking volume. Walking durations are largely invariant to these factors. The third study explores the effects of urban attributes on the aggregated route choices of individuals through the use of revealed preferences. The study's findings suggest that pedestrians are sensitive to the presence of retail destinations and transit availability in their choice of path. Despite this, architectural and street-level design features have mixed effects. These analyses contribute a new approach to understanding the interrelationships between the built environment and pedestrian activity, and how those effects contribute to the walkability of communities. This thesis also tests the usefulness of passive, pervasive mobile devices in evaluating urban space, and considers their potential to aid in the development of human-centered urban design-from an analysis of the quantified self toward the understanding of the quantified community.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines the spatial, social, and economic aspects of pedestrianism in three active pedestrian areas of Los Angeles to identify the causes of their activity, and to shed light on how these aspects work together to achieve pedestrian vibrancy. Three old commercial strips were selected to reflect a wide range of demographic, socioeconomic, and urban space characteristics; these three cases were analyzed to determine qualitative and quantitative factors that influence pedestrian flow and activity, such as business type and quantity, physical characteristics of streets, blocks and sidewalks, and demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. These case studies show that there are factors that have a direct and positive influence on pedestrian traffic and activity along sidewalks (such as the gross leasable area and population density in the neighborhood area), while other factors have a direct and negative influence on pedestrian traffic (for example, wide store fronts, and a high number of convenient shopping and personal and professional services). At the same time, other features considered important to walking in the literature, such as ample parking, greenery, landscaping, and street furniture were found to have an indirect or ambiguous influence on pedestrian traffic. Perhaps more importantly, I found through observations across the study cases, that variables interact in different ways to produce at least three design outcomes that attract pedestrians: (1) a business mix that respond to people's tastes and preference in the neighborhood trade area, (2) slower vehicle traffic speeds and frequent opportunities for crossing the street, and (3) physical and psychological comfort conditions along sidewalks that mostly result from providing adequate space for walking, buffering from traffic, and consistency and continuity along shopping strips.

This is illustrated by focusing on the winter sidewalk maintenance delivery standards in Canadian municipalities, which often suffers from a mismatch with the spatial distribution of pedestrian activity. As a response, the first objective of this research is to predict the spatial distribution of pedestrian activity. This is done by reviewing five approaches to pedestrian modeling and demonstrating an understanding of the built environment and non-built environment variables that influence pedestrian demand. Based on common shortcomings to each approach, an analytical approach is proposed and used to construct a Pedestrian Activity Model (P.A.M.) predicting daily walking trip count per neighbourhood, with the City of Waterloo as the case study area. Building on this, an analysis of the highest classes of the constructed P.A.M. is utilized to suggest a Pedestrian Priority Zone. This addresses the second research objective, which is to identify high foot traffic areas to construct a priority zone for delivering enhanced and efficient winter sidewalk maintenance. Between the two tested regression types, the Spatial Error Regression (SER) is a better fit in capturing daily walking trips. Of the seven explanatory variables considered, only Transit Activity, Metric Reach (sidewalk connectivity), and Elementary and Secondary School Student Enrollment variables are significant under the SER model. As a result, the Pedestrian Activity Model is founded on the SER model and the 3 significant variables. The highest pedestrian activity class is found along University Avenue between University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, while the second highest is found around the Uptown. A single Pedestrian Priority Zone is suggested based on amalgamating the three highest P.A.M. classes. While the results are context-specific, the methodology is transferable. The process of constructing the predictive model can be used to validate other existing pedestrian models. Also, constructing a Pedestrian Activity Model could be an essential piece to decision making not just for enhancing public works services, but also for recommending new infrastructure connections, prioritizing streetscape enhancement projects, encouraging commercial and retail development, and boosting Real Estate market.

Allocation of resources to build facilities amicable to pedestrians is governed by pedestrian activity at the location of interest. Collecting real world data such as pedestrian counts (indicating pedestrian activity) at each point of interest is an expensive and time consuming process. On the other hand, unlike trip generation models to estimate vehicle trips, literature documents limited research to model and measure activity pertaining to pedestrian counts. This thesis presents a development and an evaluation of models to measure pedestrian activity at both high and low pedestrian activity locations at different time periods. Data collected at 176 signalized intersections in the City of Charlotte, located in the State of North Carolina, are used to develop models to measure pedestrian activity by time of the day. Pedestrian counts collected at the 176 intersections are used as a dependent variable. Factors such as demographic characteristics (population, household units), socio-economic characteristics (income level, employment), land-use characteristics (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.), network characteristics (number of approaches, number of lanes, speed limits, traffic volume, presence of medians), and the number of transit stops are extracted and estimated using features available in a commercial Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software program. These factors are used as independent variables. Stepwise regression analysis through backward elimination of independent variables is used to develop the models. The developed models could be used by practitioners to measure pedestrian activity at a location if data are available. The measured pedestrian activity could be used in transportation planning, safety, and operational analyses.

Recent technology advances, such as the widespread use of mobile devices and geographic information systems, enable the collection of disaggregate built environment and travel behavior data. To integrate pedestrian planning into transport operations at local and regional scales, it is necessary to develop systems to rank and prioritize zones and corridors for pedestrian infrastructure investment. Best practices for pedestrian planning suggest that jurisdictions prioritize pedestrian projects based on a variety of concerns, such as high pedestrian activity, pedestrian safety, accessibility to transit and mobility for persons with disabilities, children and older adults. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology developed and piloted an automated system to assess the quality of sidewalks, utilizing an AndroidTM App that collects GPS-enabled video, accelerometer, and gyroscope data. Researchers collected pilot sidewalk data within the City of Atlanta to evaluate the accessibility and walkability of pedestrian facilities. This research proposes a weighted ranking system to prioritize pedestrian projects using App-collected pedestrian facility data collected in the field using a mobile Android application, pedestrian safety indicators, pedestrian activity data and demographic data. The ranking system uses a set of block-level pedestrian potential and deficiency indicators to prioritize planning investments within a subarea of Midtown, Atlanta, Georgia, combining available data sources with app-collected sidewalk width data. The results of these rank-order prioritization analyses indicate that blocks near rail stations and Georgia Institute of Technology/Technology Square should be prioritized for pedestrian investments. However, further refinements are needed to extend the application of this methodology to larger geographic scales. Additionally, this research did not consider the cost constraints of pedestrian project alternatives within the study area. Future availability of comprehensive pedestrian activity and pedestrian network data will enable planners and engineers to prioritize corridors and intersections for pedestrian project implementation.
