Book excerpt: Evidence has shown that individuals leaving school without qualifications are four times more likely to be unemployed than those with qualifications. Preventing and combating unemployment therefore requires active measures both in the labour market and in the institutions responsible for preparing the future workforce - educational institutions. Attempts to remedy this problem have so far largely neglected children from socially excluded families - one of the most vulnerable groups in education. The right to learn explores a wide range of strategies, both at the policy level and in the field, to improve educational success among such disadvantaged children, taking stock of good practice in a selection of EU member states, chosen to reflect the diversity in systems and policies that currently exist. The book suggests that a number of strategies are effective and feasible. The authors recommend that a sufficiently powerful opinion movement is needed to promote the transfer of experience and action on different levels. They conclude with several suggestions for good practice - not just equal opportunity and equal treatment but also equal outcomes strategies. The right to learn is important reading for teachers, school administrators, educational researchers, policy makers, NGOs, parents' associations, those engaged in youth services and teacher training, and in formulating policies to secure the social integration of the young generation.

Are they better or worse at numeracy than their neighbours? Does the English education system measure up to the challenge from its competitors? This is an examination of the education system in England as compared with neighbouring countries, such as France. This text shows what pupils in England and France are doing in the classroom and what standards they achieve. The voices of the pupils themselves articulate numerous perceptions.

The authors show how the essence of formative assessment is in teachers′ responses to the substance students′ understandings, with a focus on how teachers can use pedagogical strategies to move students forward toward important learning outcomes. I highly recommend the book for both researchers and practitioners. It is an engaging, in-depth, sophisticated treatment of formative assessment.′ - James H. McMillan, Virginia Commonwealth University Formative Assessment (AFL) supplies the strategy to support effective teaching, and to make learning deep and sustained. This book shows how to develop your planning for learner-centred day-to-day teaching and learning situations through an understanding of formative teaching, learning and assessment. Within each chapter, based on real teaching situations, the strategies of the ′formative assessment toolkit′ are identified and analysed: guided group teaching differentiation observation & evidence elicitation analysis & feedback co-construction reflective planning self-regulation dialogue & dialogic strategies. The principles set out in this book can be applied to any age or stage in education, but will be particularly useful to current practising teachers, students following international and national teacher training courses; CPD or in-service work; and MEd and MA post-graduate assessment/teaching and learning modules.

This book was released on 2006-01-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers struggle every day to bring quality instruction to their students. Beset by lists of content standards and accompanying "high-stakes" accountability tests, many educators sense that both teaching and learning have been redirected in ways that are potentially impoverishing for those who teach and those who learn. Educators need a model that acknowledges the centrality of standards but also ensures that students truly understand content and can apply it in meaningful ways. For many educators, Understanding by Design addresses that need. Simultaneously, teachers find it increasingly difficult to ignore the diversity of the learners who populate their classrooms. Few teachers find their work effective or satisfying when they simply "serve up" a curriculum—even an elegant one—to students with no regard for their varied learning needs. For many educators, Differentiated Instruction offers a framework for addressing learner variance as a critical component of instructional planning. In this book the two models converge, providing readers fresh perspectives on two of the greatest contemporary challenges for educators: crafting powerful curriculum in a standards-dominated era and ensuring academic success for the full spectrum of learners. Each model strengthens the other. Understanding by Design is predominantly a curriculum design model that focuses on what we teach. Differentiated Instruction focuses on whom we teach, where we teach, and how we teach. Carol Ann Tomlinson and Jay McTighe show you how to use the principles of backward design and differentiation together to craft lesson plans that will teach essential knowledge and skills for the full spectrum of learners. Connecting content and kids in meaningful ways is what teachers strive to do every day. In tandem, UbD and DI help educators meet that goal by providing structures, tools, and guidance for developing curriculum and instruction that bring to students the best of what we know about effective teaching and learning.

Book excerpt: Dr. Jerry Toupin loves winter! It is his favourite season. He is an expert in earth sciences and has been exploring the subject for 25 years. His obsession has generated some wonderful and fascinating thoughts, weird facts and great stories of our enduring cold: In Ontario, a tradition is to drive an old car out onto a lake and take bets on when the ice will break and it sinks The city of Montréal budgeted $155 million for snow removal in 2015 Groundhog weather forecasters are right only about 35 percent of the time Newspapers tend to be negative in reporting about winter, which gives people negative perceptions about winter Winter sports include not just hockey and curling, but snowshoeing, sledding, skating, skiing, snowboarding, ice yachting, ice fishing, bobsleigh, Crashed Ice, dogsled racing and many more Children and people who live in rural areas spend more time outside in the wintertime and enjoy the season more Winter is exhibited in many aspects of Canadian life: currency, stamps, place names, family names, license plates and our passport Many communities across the country celebrate winter with festivals such as the Royal Winter Fair in Montréal, Québec; Ice on Whyte in Edmonton, Alberta; Québec Winter Carnival in Québec City; Ottawas Winterlude on the Rideau Canal and many more Hockey is our national sport, but are we really the best in the world as we think? Find out here! Including maps, graphs and charts, this is an authoritative look at the truth about winter from a Canadian perspective!

Book excerpt: This is an exploration of the ways in which science teachers can respond appropriately to the whole range of pupils in their classes in mainstream schools. The author analyzes the nature of individual differences relevant to the science teacher, paying particular attention to learning difficulties and to high ability. He considers different kinds of response and specific tactics which can be deployed to help the range of pupils who find science difficult to learn, and to extend and enrich the science education of those who learn it with ease. He provides a theoretical framework for differentiated science teaching and practical proposals for effective classroom practice.
