Book excerpt: At first sight in Peter Barnes' book, A Handful of Pebbles, the word 'liberalism' does not seem threatening in any way. Quite the reverse, it is often associated with ideas like 'democracy', 'freedom' and 'generosity of spirit'. However, there is something quite sinister about 'theological liberalism'; although not a well-defined term, it usually refers to a belief system which rejects the orthodox view of the Christian faith as set out in the Bible, and summarized in the church's historic creeds and confessions. This book traces the origins and development of theological liberalism and convincingly demonstrates what a dangerous and destructive thing it is to the Christian church. The author shows that a battle continues to rage today, not between two varieties of true Christianity, but between truth and error, light and darkness, good and evil.

Book excerpt: The twentieth-anniversary edition of Marion Blumenthal Lazan’s acclaimed Holocaust memoir features new material by the author, a reading group guide, a map, and additional photographs. “The writing is direct, devastating, with no rhetoric or exploitation. The truth is in what’s said and in what is left out.”—ALA Booklist (starred review) Marion Blumenthal Lazan’s unforgettable and acclaimed memoir recalls the devastating years that shaped her childhood. Following Hitler’s rise to power, the Blumenthal family—father, mother, Marion, and her brother, Albert—were trapped in Nazi Germany. They managed eventually to get to Holland, but soon thereafter it was occupied by the Nazis. For the next six and a half years the Blumenthals were forced to live in refugee, transit, and prison camps, including Westerbork in Holland and Bergen-Belsen in Germany, before finally making it to the United States. Their story is one of horror and hardship, but it is also a story of courage, hope, and the will to survive. Four Perfect Pebbles features forty archival photographs, including several new to this edition, an epilogue, a bibliography, a map, a reading group guide, an index, and a new afterword by the author. First published in 1996, the book was an ALA Notable Book, an ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, and IRA Young Adults’ Choice, and a Notable Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies, and the recipient of many other honors. “A harrowing and often moving account.”—School Library Journal

Book excerpt: In a masterwork of brilliant storytelling, the epic fantasy of two parallel worlds—mystical Eldh and modern Earth—takes a surprising turn in Book Five of Mark Anthony’s thrilling saga of magic, suspense, and adventure, The Last Rune. The enigmatic Shemal has known only two Runebreakers. One, her rival Kelephon, served the Pale King and his army of apocalypse. The other was Travis Wilder, the Runebreaker of prophecy. Now, in outcast and newly made Runebreaker Larad, Shemal has found a weapon to open the door between worlds. As the shadow of Shemal’s master, the vengeful god Mohg, Lord of Nightfall, looms, Grace Beckett seeks to harness wild magic and Travis Wilder joins her in the struggle between warriors and mages, witches and kings and betrayers of every form. As the time of final reckoning approaches, Travis and Grace will find themselves facing a dark conspiracy of evil whose virulence threatens to overwhelm anyone who stands in its way. Yet if they don’t succeed in stopping it, two worlds will be lost forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is filled with questions for which we struggle to find answers. Most of them tend to arise when facing uncertainty, powerlessness, or hopelessness while lying on a hospital bed. It is not infrequent to hear family members, friends, and even the clergy offering comfort by almost compulsively using phrases like, aEURoeEverything happens for a reason,aEUR or aEURoeIt is GodaEUR(tm)s will.aEUR While well intended, these words tend to provide little solace to the afflicted. Propelled by the fear of judgment by those whom they hold in high regard, they push down the pain of feeling abandoned by God and adrift in their faith journey. In a quest to seek some comfort, it is easy to find books on grace that are plentiful in favor, joyfulness, and merry-making advice. However, what if there were more to grace? Unapologetic about his own internal struggle while witnessing unspeakable suffering, Fr. Modestus Ngwu produced an honest, insightful, and provocative piece that provides a transformative and compassionate approach to grace. Grounded on authentic pastoral care, he invites the reader to get acquainted with and draw strength from the beautifully crafted and detailed stories derived from his many experiences. The indestructibility of GodaEUR(tm)s infinite grace, hope, and love during periods of suffering are the cornerstones of his book Grace in Horror.Father ModestusaEUR(tm) book reveals how grace is truly present and active in what might appear to be utter horror. aEUR"Most Rev. Ronald W. Gainer, Bishop of Harrisburg This reflection is highly recommended for anyone in health care, for anyone who asks, why does a good God allow suffering and for anyone who seeks to delve deeper into the mysteries of Grace. It is a compelling read that offers much to reflect and meditate upon. aEUR"Elizabeth E. Frauenhoffer, MD, OCDS

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I smiled as I walked down memory lane writing this page. It all started with an Uber ride in Cumming, Georgia, sometime in February 2017. There I was, a tad bit agitated about banking and financial matters, hoping I concealed my feelings as I rode in Pastor Denburk Gregory's car. He invited me to his church, The Full Truth Church of God Deliverance Center; and based on our very first conversation, which you will get to read inside, the letter writing began. Having gotten good responses from the church after the first letter, my work was done, or so I thought, until the Lord put more words in my heart. So there was a second letter, and a third, and this went on and on. Where am I going with this? I wondered. "The Lord says to tell you that you are writing a book," said his wife, Minister Veronica Gregory. That totally astounded me. Many a time I hear over and over, "The things we do are not ordinary." That Uber ride was clearly not an ordinary one. It was a prelude to the birth of Letters from the Wilderness, and to me, this was a clear confirmation of His Word, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares" (Heb. 13:2). I do hope you enjoy reading this book even more than I have enjoyed writing it.

Book excerpt: One of the Time 100 Best Fantasy Books Of All Time Two men rebel together against tyranny—and then become rivals—in this first sweeping book of an epic fantasy series from Ken Liu, recipient of Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards. Hailed as one of the best books of 2015 by NPR. Wily, charming Kuni Garu, a bandit, and stern, fearless Mata Zyndu, the son of a deposed duke, seem like polar opposites. Yet, in the uprising against the emperor, the two quickly become the best of friends after a series of adventures fighting against vast conscripted armies, silk-draped airships, and shapeshifting gods. Once the emperor has been overthrown, however, they each find themselves the leader of separate factions—two sides with very different ideas about how the world should be run and the meaning of justice. Fans of intrigue, intimate plots, and action will find a new series to embrace in the Dandelion Dynasty.

Book excerpt: London’s social season is full of surprises for an awkward young woman and her aunt in this Regency romance by the author of The Naked Duke. Tell Me What You Want New to London society and rather . . . awkward . . . Lady Grace Belmont would just as soon hide behind the palm trees as dance with a man she doesn’t know. But Baron Dawson is on the hunt for a wife. Grace’s generous curves and remarkable height do not intimidate him. In fact, it would be more accurate to describe his reaction to the charming newcomer as lust. Before Grace can so much as gather her thoughts, she finds herself in his arms, committing one shocking impropriety after another. The Baron’s devilish attractiveness—to say nothing of his splendid muscles—is simply impossible to resist. Her beloved aunt and chaperone advises patience, but Grace is not about to listen. The handsome baron is whispering such delightful things in her ear . . . Praise for the writing of USA Today–bestselling author Sally MacKenzie “The romance equivalent of chocolate cake . . . Every page is an irresistible delight!” —Lisa Kleypas “Naked, noble and irresistible—who could resist one of Sally MacKenzie's heroes?” —Eloisa James “Plenty of sexy sizzle and charming wit.” —Booklist “Plenty of heat and hilarity.” —Publishers Weekly
