Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peat and Its Uses, as Fertilizer and Fuel In the years 1857 and 1858, the writer, in the capacity of Chemist to the State Agricultural Society of Connecticut, was commissioned to make investigations into the agricultural uses of the deposits of peat or swamp muck which are abundant in this State; and. in 1858, he submitted a Report to Henry A. Dyer, Esq., Corresponding Secretary of the Society, embodying his conclusions. In the present work the valuable portions of that Report have been recast, and, with addition of much new matter, form Parts I. and II. The remainder of the book, relating to the preparation and employment of peat for fuel, &c., is now for the first time published, and is intended to give a faithful account of the results of the experience that has been acquired in Europe, during the last twenty-five years, in regard to the important subject of which it treats. The employment of peat as an amendment and absorbent for agricultural purposes has proved to be of great advantage in New-England fanning. It is not to be doubted, that, as fuel, it will be even more valuable than as a fertilizer. Our peat-beds, while they do not occupy so much territory as to be an impediment and a reproach to our country, as they have been to Ireland, are yet so abundant and so widely distributed - occurring from the Atlantic to the Missouri, along and above the 40th parallel, and appearing on our Eastern Coast at least as far South as North Carolina - as to present, at numberless points, material, which, sooner or later, will serve us most usefully when other fuel has become scarce and costly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Peat, Muck, and Commercial Manures In 1856 the writer attempted to turn his chemical knowledge to the use of Agriculture, by examining the commercial fertilizers then offered for sale in the markets of Connecticut and New York. In a business having such prospects of extension as lay before the trade in manures, in a region where convenient markets largely counterbalance the disadvantages of poor and worn-out soils, it was to be anticipated that frauds would arise, especially since it is so difficult or even in many cases impossible, to judge accurately of the quality of a fertilizer from its external characters. Chemistry which has done so much for all the practical arts during the last 50 years, and which has made possible the extensive use of artificial fertilizers, fortunately offers the farmer complete protection against every attempt to defraud him by worthless mixtures, sold under high-sounding names and forged certificates; and although there is no scientific merit in analyzing manures, there is great practical use in saving the hard-toiling farmer from profitless and ruinous expenditures. In the year just mentioned, the writer published in the Homestead a series of papers on the principal fertilizers then on sale in Connecticut. These articles excited much interest among the readers of that Journal, and at the Annual Meeting of the Connecticut State Agricultural Society, in Jan. 1857, the writer was invited to address that body upon "Frauds in Commercial Manures." It was then shown that gross deceit had actually been practised by parties soliciting the patronage of the farmers of this State, and the great facilities for perpetrating further frauds were made the subject of a lengthened exposition. At that time the writer was commissioned on behalf of the State Agricultural Society to make chemical analyses of all commercial manures offered for sate in the State, and to report upon them through the columns of the Homestead. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peat and Its Products: An Illustrated Treatise on Peat and Its Products as a National Source of Wealth The aim of this work is to direct general attention to the economy of Peat as a substitute of coal and for the development of its numerous bye-products. The subject, now that the Irish land difficulties have been relieved by legislation, and that we have lately had bitter experience of a coal famine, is ripe for serious discussion and practical consideration. In directing the attention of the community at large to the various uses and products of this source of wealth lying at our doors, together with the methods of preparation and manufacture, care has been taken to quote every reliable authority to whom we have had access. Hitherto, save in the cot of the crofter or in the cabin of the "rug-headed kern," Peat has been little known as a fuel in these Islands, though its value on the Continent has long been appreciated and its production fostered by various States. Abroad, throughout the German Empire, in many parts of France, in Austria, Russia, Holland, and throughout the length and breadth of Scandinavia, it is regarded as one of the most precious national assets, adding materially to the general national resources in its application to manufactures generally and to domestic uses. The meliorated soil follows less rapidly the extremes during rapid changes in the atmosphere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook on the Winning and the Utilization of Peat Notwithstanding the many excellent journals and handbooks devoted to peat which have been published on the Continent, the author felt that a new edition of his book was required to serve as a guide for those who are interested in the winning and the utilization of peat in Germany. If this want were felt abroad, how much more so should it be experienced here, where no such journals or handbooks exist! No apology is therefore required for the publication of this translation of a work which has earned for itself a high reputation amongst German readers. The circumstance that the translation was carried out during the period of the late war, when collaboration between the trans lator and the author was impossible, may perhaps have led to an occasional misunderstanding, but these, if any, should be very few in number, since the translator has in all cases adhered as closely as possible to the letter and the spirit of the author's text. It may reasonably be expected that this edition will prove very useful to those about to engage in the development of our peat resources. The translator would like to point out, however, that the estimates for the cost of winning peat by the various methods here described should be accepted with great reserve. Fluctua tions in our labour market, uncertainty of our climate in com parison with that of Germany, and variations in the transport facilities for different localities, will greatly affect the cost of the product, which ought to be considered de novo in every particular case. In places where coal or lignite can be obtained at cheap rates, the replacement of these by peat as a fuel for household or indus trial purposes will not in general be remunerative. In peat districts remote from coal-mines, however, peat can be converted, in a commercially successful manner, into a fuel capable of replacing coal for all the purposes for which the latter is used. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1925 Harold Ross hired Katharine Sergeant Angell as a manuscript reader for The New Yorker. Within months she became the magazine’s first fiction editor, discovering and championing the work of Vladimir Nabokov, John Updike, James Thurber, Marianne Moore, and her husband-to-be, E. B. White, among others. After years of cultivating fiction, White set her sights on a new genre: garden writing. On March 1, 1958, The New Yorker ran a column entitled “Onward and Upward in the Garden,” a critical review of garden catalogs, in which White extolled the writings of “seedmen and nurserymen,” those unsung authors who produced her “favorite reading matter.” Thirteen more columns followed, exploring the history and literature of gardens, flower arranging, herbalists, and developments in gardening. Two years after her death in 1977, E. B. White collected and published the series, with a fond introduction. The result is this sharp-eyed appreciation of the green world of growing things, of the aesthetic pleasures of gardens and garden writing, and of the dreams that gardens inspire.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.
