This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this book, reprinted from the journal Past and Present, are all, in different ways, concerned with the ownership of landed property in medieval England and with those who worked the land. Problems debated include those concerning the keeping intact of the great estates of the Anglo-Norman barons in the face of both inheritance claims and of political manipulation by the crown. Other articles show that the difficulties of knights and lesser gentry were no less complex, as social shifts resulted from economic developments as well as from their military role and their relationships with their overlords. The essays are of as much importance for those interested in the history of politics as to those concerned with the economy and society of medieval England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a meticulously documented account of the political activities of the landlords of Uttar Pradesh--the holders of large zamindari and taluqdari estates who sustained local political power in the rural areas. The British used these landlords as the centerpiece of their system of political control in the rural areas of the province. Until the 1914-1918 war, this system appeared to operate to the satisfaction of both the British and the landlords. In the 1920s and 1930s, however, their relationship became increasingly ambivalent. When the Indian National Congress assumed power--first in the context of provincial autonomy in the late 1930s and then in the context of complete independence--some landlords continued to believe that there was still a role for a distinct landlord political group in Uttar Pradesh politics. Only after independcence, in the early 1950s when the agrarian system was refashioned by zamindari abolition, did the idea of a political role for landlords in the former sense finally end.

Book excerpt: The troubled history of democracy in Latin America has been the subject of much scholarly commentary. This volume breaks new ground by systematically exploring the linkages among the historical legacies of large landholding patterns, agrarian class relations, and authoritarian versus democratic trajectories in Latin American countries. The essays address questions about the importance of large landownders for the national economy, the labor needs and labor relations of these landowners, attempts of landowners to enlist the support of the state to control labor, and the democratic forms of rule in the twentieth century.

Division, Research and Analysis Branch, U. S. Office of Strategic Services, 1941·45; holder of the Medal of Freedom) has produced a book that is, by general consensus, supreme in its field. The work makes a major contribution to the understanding of the struggle of the peasantry with the old landlords and the Imperial Government, and consequently offers an iltuminaling approach to the struggle between the Communist Government and the most stubborn and massive domestic force this Government has faced-the peasant opposition.
