Book Synopsis Pearls, People, and Power by : Pedro Machado
Download or read book Pearls, People, and Power written by Pedro Machado and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-27 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pearls, People, and Power is the first book to examine the trade, distribution, production, and consumption of pearls and mother-of-pearl in the global Indian Ocean over more than five centuries. While scholars have long recognized the importance of pearling to the social, cultural, and economic practices of both coastal and inland areas, the overwhelming majority have confined themselves to highly localized or at best regional studies of the pearl trade. By contrast, this book stresses how pearling and the exchange in pearl shell were interconnected processes that brought the ports, islands, and coasts into close relation with one another, creating dense networks of connectivity that were not necessarily circumscribed by local, regional, or indeed national frames. Essays from a variety of disciplines address the role of slaves and indentured workers in maritime labor arrangements, systems of bondage and transoceanic migration, the impact of European imperialism on regional and local communities, commodity flows and networks of exchange, and patterns of marine resource exploitation between the Industrial Revolution and Great Depression. By encompassing the geographical, cultural, and thematic diversity of Indian Ocean pearling, Pearls, People, and Power deepens our appreciation of the underlying historical dynamics of the many worlds of the Indian Ocean. Contributors: Robert Carter, William G. Clarence-Smith, Joseph Christensen, Matthew S. Hopper, Pedro Machado, Julia T. Martínez, Michael McCarthy, Jonathan Miran, Steve Mullins, Karl Neuenfeldt, Samuel M. Ostroff, and James Francis Warren.

My childhood years were years filled with poverty and hardship. The people I knew were mostly in the same economic and cultural deprivation that I was. I believe the hardships I encountered during those times made me much stronger as I faced the many adversities that were to crop up in my adult life. Read this book and enjoy getting to know the characters...

This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose and Scope: This text has been produced to alert learners of English using Arabic as L1 to the most typical problem areas that tend to hinder their progress as they endeavor to overcome native language interference in the process of growing into the target language. The functions of capitalization and syntax have received special emphasis. The analytical perspective takes precedence over its pedagogical counterpart. Learner Focus: The primary readership is expected to grow beyond Arabic speakers per se and is most likely to include learners using Farsi, Urdu, or Turkish as L1. In addition, even a broad spectrum of learners using reference languages with various different alphabets (e.g. Bengali, Hangul, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Mandarin) will find the text useful to a considerable extent. Appendices: The exercises included in the three appendices are ambitiously written and intended to reveal to the learner the formidable amount of lexical material that will have to be internalized on the road to solid proficiency. ESL instructors teaching Arabic speakers are aware of the difficult and time-consuming effort involved in the acquisition of vocabulary.

Book Synopsis Aircraft Carriers by : Norman Polmar
Download or read book Aircraft Carriers written by Norman Polmar and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft Carriers is the definitive history of world aircraft carrier development and operations. Norman Polmar’s revised and updated, two-volume classic describes the political and technological factors that influenced aircraft carrier design and construction, meticulously records their operations, and explains their impact on modern warfare. Volume I provides a comprehensive analysis of carrier developments and warfare in the first half of the twentieth century, and examines the advances that allowed the carrier to replace the battleship as the dominant naval weapons system. Polmar gives particular emphasis to carrier operations from World War I, through the Japanese strikes against China in the 1930s, to World War II in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Arctic, and Pacific theaters. It begins with French inventor Clément Ader’s remarkably prescient 1909 description of an aircraft carrier. The book then explains how Britain led the world in the development of aircraft-carrying ships, soon to be followed by the United States and Japan. While ship-based aircraft operations in World War I had limited impact, they foreshadowed the aircraft carriers built in the 1920s and 1930s. The volume also describes the aircraft operating from those ships as well as the commanders who pioneered carrier aviation. Aircraft Carriers has benefited from the technical collaboration of senior carrier experts Captain Eric M. Brown and General Minoru Genda as well as noted historians Robert M. Langdon and Peter B. Mersky. Aircraft Carriers is heavily illustrated with more than 400 photographs—some never before published—and maps. Volume II, which is forthcoming from Potomac Books in the winter 2006-2007 (ISBN 978-1-57488-665-8), will cover the period 1946 to the present.
