By the way, the kindergarten of our story had a big yard, in where there were so many big and small trees, but one of them which was the most beautiful of all was a peach tree having delicious peaches with pretty colors, under which the kids were always playing with each other. Everyone was so happy in that yard except for our little pit, living in one of the peaches of that tree and was sticking to one of the branches. Every time it was looking at the kids while playing, it wished to be free and able to play with them, but it couldn't. That's why it was always upset and full of tears until one day when it was, like always, looking at the kids...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is truly an awesome program, and the primary editing tool for so many photographers today. But, at some point, you realize that there are things you need to do to your images that Lightroom just can’t do. It could be anything from pro-level portrait retouching, to blending two or more images together, to incredible special effects, to removing distracting things in your image, to adding beautiful type to your images, and, well...there are just lots of incredible things you could do...if you just knew Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop is...well...it’s Photoshop—this huge, amazing, Swiss Army knife of a program with 70+ tools, and more than a hundred filters. So, compared to Lightroom it seems really complicated, and it could be, but you’ve got a secret weapon: Scott Kelby. He’s the same guy who wrote the world’s #1 best-selling book on Lightroom, he’s Editor and Publisher of Photoshop User magazine and Lightroom Magazine, and he’s here to teach you just the most important, most useful parts of Photoshop—just the stuff that Lightroom can’t already do. Once you learn these techniques (all covered in this short, quick, easy-to-use, plain-English guide), it opens a whole new world of productivity and creativity. Here’s what you’ll learn: Scott tells you flat-out which tools to use, which techniques work best, which ones to avoid, and why. You only really need about 20% of what Photoshop can do, and that 20% is all covered right in this book. The most important layer techniques, and learning layers is like being handed the keys to the candy store—this is where the fun begins, and you’ll be amazed at what you’ll be able to do, so quickly and easily. Scott’s favorite (and most useful) portrait retouching techniques; his favorite special effects for landscape, travel, and people photos; plus which filters are awesome (and which ones waste your time). Also, you’ll learn how to mask hair and create super-realistic composites (you’ll be amazed when you learn how easy this is), plus how to take advantage of all the latest Photoshop technology, how to leverage the latest features (so you’re doing things the easy way), and a bunch of today’s most popular techniques (the same commercial looks you’re seeing in hot demand), so you’ll be using Photoshop like a shark in no time. If you’ve been saying to yourself, “Ya know, I really should learn Photoshop,” you’re holding the absolute best book to get you there, coming from the guy who literally wrote the book on Lightroom. He knows how to help you make the most of using these two powerful tools together to take your images (and your fun) to the next level. You are going to love being a Photoshop shark!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too many Jewish young people, bar/bat mitzvah has been the beginning of the end of their Jewish journeys. When students perceive the Torah as incomprehensible or irrelevant, many form the false impression that Judaism has nothing to say to them. Enter the game-changer: the JPS B’nai Mitzvah Torah Commentary shows teens in their own language how Torah addresses the issues in their world. The conversational tone is inviting and dignified, concise and substantial, direct and informative. The narrative summaries, “big” ideas, model divrei Torah, haftarot commentaries, and discussion questions will engage teens in studying the Torah and haftarot, in writing divrei Torah, and in continuing to learn Torah throughout their lives—making it the book every rabbi, cantor, parent, and tutor will also want to have. Jewish learning—for young people and adults—will never be the same. Weekly portion pamphlets are now available for every parasha of The JPS B'nai Mitzvah Torah Commentary!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1874 a handful of men and one women set out for the Texas Panhandle to seek their fortunes in the great buffalo hunt. Moving south to follow the herds, they intended to establish a trading post to serve the hunter, or "hide men." At a place called Adobe Walls they dug blocks from the sod and built their center of operations After operating for only a few months, the post was attacked one sultry June morning by angry members of several Plains Indian tribes, whose physical and cultural survival depending on the great bison herd that were rapidly shrinking before the white men's guns. Initially defeated, that attacking Indians retreated. But the defenders also retreated leaving the deserted post to be burned by Indians intent on erasing all traces of the white man's presence. Nonetheless, tracing did remain, and in the ashes and dirt were buried minute details of the hide men's lives and the battle that so suddenly changed them. A little more than a century later white men again dug into the sod at Adobe Walls. The nineteenth-century men dug for profits, but the modern hunters sere looking for the natural time capsule inadvertently left by those earlier adventurers. The authors of this book, a historian and an archeologists, have dug into the sod and into far-flung archives to sift reality form the long-romanticized story of Adobe Walls, its residents, and the Indians who so fiercely resented their presence. The full story of Adobe Walls now tells us much about the life and work of the hide men, about the dying of the Plains Indian culture, and about the march of white commerce across the frontier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Improbable Friendship is the dual biography of Israeli Ruth Dayan, now ninety-eight, who was Moshe Dayan’s wife for thirty-seven years, and Palestinian journalist Raymonda Tawil, Yasser Arafat’s mother-in-law, now seventy-four. It reveals for the first time the two women’s surprising and secret forty-year friendship and delivers the story of their extraordinary and turbulent lives growing up in a war-torn country. Based on personal interviews, diaries, and journals drawn from both women—Ruth lives today in Tel Aviv, Raymonda in Malta—author Anthony David delivers a fast-paced, fascinating narrative that is a beautiful story of reconciliation and hope in a climate of endless conflict. By experiencing their stories and following their budding relationship, which began after the Six-Day War in 1967, we learn the behind-the-scenes, undisclosed history of the Middle East’s most influential leaders from two prominent women on either side of the ongoing conflict. An award-winning biographer and historian, Anthony David brings us the story of unexpected friendship while he discovers the true pasts of two outstanding women. Their story gives voice to Israelis and Palestinians caught in the Middle East conflict and holds a persistent faith in a future of peace. Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book uses the lens of cultural history to examine the development of medicine in Qing dynasty China. Focusing on the specialty of "medicine for women"(fuke), Yi-Li Wu explores the material and ideological issues associated with childbearing in the late imperial period. She draws on a rich array of medical writings that circulated in seventeenth- to nineteenth-century China to analyze the points of convergence and contention that shaped people's views of women's reproductive diseases. These points of contention touched on fundamental issues: How different were women's bodies from men's? What drugs were best for promoting conception and preventing miscarriage? Was childbirth inherently dangerous? And who was best qualified to judge? Wu shows that late imperial medicine approached these questions with a new, positive perspective.
