Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace or War in South Africa The increasing luxury and the rise in the price of the necessities of life drove our public men to seek sources of revenue which their forefathers would have scorned. The sale of public offices, of seats in Parliament, and of influence, had created a system of jobbery so gigantic that it is to-day almost impossible to appreciate its far-reaching effects. The Paymaster of the Forces thought it no disgrace to use hundreds of thousands of pounds Of the public money for private ends; Ministers did not Shrink from Open bribery, from receiving fees and percentages, and from sharing the profit on contracts of every kind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace or War in South Africa The prospect of a prolongation of the South African War is beginning to shake the confidence of the public in the ability of their Ministers. When we see that after many efforts a powerful Ministry is unable to fulfil any of its predictions and that all its calculations have been falsified, we must in ordinary prudence conclude that it has totally misjudged the difficulties of its task, that its policy is not based on common sense, and that its wisdom is not equal to its good intentions. Many men who, like myself, have hitherto given an independent but steady support to the Ministerial party begin to ask themselves whether this party is pursuing a policy which is consistent with the safety and the high traditions of England. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Effects During the summer and autumn of 1899 I spent several months in South Africa examining the political situation in the Transvaal and Cape Colony. I was at Pretoria during the most critical period of the negotiations, at Bloemfontein when the Raad of the Free State decided to stand by the Transvaal, and at Cape Town when the war began, and I had the opportunity of personal intercourse with many men of political prominence in the Republics and the Colony. The earlier chapters of this book are chiefly revised and amplified impressions of what I saw and heard, and include detailed studies of "Outlander grievances" and of the feelings of Dutch and British Afrikanders upon the eve of the present conflict. Several of the chief issues I have detached for separate treatment, fortifying personal experience and intercourse by documentary evidence, some of which has not been before published in this country. The latter part of the volume is chiefly devoted to an economic and political analysis of those factors in the situation which throw light upon the possibilities of a stable settlement upon the termination of the war, and of a peaceful and prosperous future for South Africa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in South Africa: Its Cause Conduct For some reason, which may be either arrogance or apathy, the British are very slow to state their case to the world. At present the reasons for our actions and the methods which we have used arc set forth in many Blue-books, tracts, and leaflets, but have never, so far as I know, been collected into one small volume. In view of the persistent slanders to which our politicians and our soldiers have been equally exposed, it becomes a duty which we owe to our national honour to lay the facts before the world. I wish someone more competent, and with some official authority, had undertaken the task, which I have tried to do as best I might from an independent standpoint. There was never a war in history in which the right was absolutely on one side, or in which no incidents of the campaign were open to criticism. I do not pretend that it was so here. But I do not think that any unprejudiced man can read the facts without acknowledging that the British Government has done its best to avoid war, and the British Army to wage it with humanity. I may add that I have not burdened my pages with continual references. My quotations are reliable and can always, if necessary, be substantiated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the War in South Africa, 1899-1900 The war in South Africa has been no exception to the general rule that the origin of current events is to be sought in the history of the past, and their present course to be understood by an appreciation of existing conditions, which decisively control it This is especially true of the matter here before us; because the southern extreme of Africa, like to that of the American continent, has heretofore lain far outside of the common interest, and therefore of the accurate knowledge, of mankind at large. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Causes of the War in South Africa: A Paper Read Before the Worcester Society of Antiquity The expediency, however, of Great Britain's paying the full value of the slaves - as of the United States' paying the whole value of the American slaves - is no longer debata ble, in view of the costly and bloody wars that grew out of both emancipations. But though our own emancipation came a generation later than the British, and we might have drawn wisdom from their experience, vet our parties never divided in that interval upon the question of offering compensation for the slaves. Our Northern people would have said, Whv must I pay my neighbor to cease from wrong-doing? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in South Africa: Prepared in the Historical Section of the Great General Staff, Berlin The essential object of this work is the instruction of the German officer, and the criticisms which it contains point out, therefore, not only our alleged faults and errors, but show also what, in the opinion of the Great General Staff at Berlin, we ought to have done. This celebrated branch of the German army had access to various sources of information both during and after the war which were closed to us, and the work may best be left to speak for itself. Germany is not the only Great Power which has a fully equipped Military History section, but hers is, perhaps, better known by name in England than the corresponding branches in other armies, and it is readily admitted that in accomplishing any task which they have set themselves, the Germans are, at any rate, thorough and systematic.
