Book excerpt: What is the difference between having empathy and being an empath? “Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain,” says Dr. Judith Orloff “But for empaths it goes much farther We actually feel others’ emotions, energy, and physical symptoms in our own bodies, without the usual defenses that most people have.” With The Empath’s Survival Guide, Dr. Orloff offers an invaluable resource to help sensitive people develop healthy coping mechanisms in our high-stimulus world—while fully embracing the empath’s gifts of intuition, creativity, and spiritual connection. In this practical and empowering book for empaths and their loved ones, Dr. Orloff begins with self-assessment exercises to help you understand your empathic nature, then offers potent strategies for protecting yourself from overwhelm and replenishing your vital energy For any sensitive person who’s been told to “grow a thick skin,” here is your lifelong guide for staying fully open while building resilience, exploring your gifts of deep perception, raising empathic children, and feeling welcomed and valued by a world that desperately needs what you have to offer.

Book excerpt: The 28th Governor General's most personal and timely book to date: a passionate and practical guide for turning empathy into action. As the world stumbles through the most severe pandemic of the last century, threatened by teetering economies, torn by political division, separated by unequal access to resources, and wrestling with issues as diverse as racism, gender, cybercrime, and climate change, the nations that best adapt and prosper are those in which empathy is fully alive and widely active. Written for a post-pandemic world, Empathy is a book about learning to be empathetic and then turning that empathy into action. Based on the personal experiences of author David Johnston, the book explores how awakening to the transformative power of listening and caring permanently changes individuals, families, communities, and nations. A how-to manual for a world craving kindness, Empathy offers proof of the inherent goodness of people, and shows how exercising the instinct for kindness creates societies that are both smart and caring. Through poignant stories and crisp observations, David contends that “Everyone has power over some things that other people don’t. When they learn ways to turn that power into action, they change the future dramatically.” With clear and practical focus, Empathy looks at a host of issues that demand our attention, from education and immigration, to healthcare, the law, policing, business ethics, and criminal justice. In each of these areas, Johnston highlights the deeper understandings that have arisen during the COVID-19 crisis, with sharp emphasis on the positive and negative lessons now in crisp focus. Convinced that empathy is the fastest route to peace and progress in all their forms, David ends each short chapter with a set of practical steps the reader can take to make the world better, one deliberate action at a time.

Book excerpt: New York Post Best Book of 2016 We often think of our capacity to experience the suffering of others as the ultimate source of goodness. Many of our wisest policy-makers, activists, scientists, and philosophers agree that the only problem with empathy is that we don’t have enough of it. Nothing could be farther from the truth, argues Yale researcher Paul Bloom. In AGAINST EMPATHY, Bloom reveals empathy to be one of the leading motivators of inequality and immorality in society. Far from helping us to improve the lives of others, empathy is a capricious and irrational emotion that appeals to our narrow prejudices. It muddles our judgment and, ironically, often leads to cruelty. We are at our best when we are smart enough not to rely on it, but to draw instead upon a more distanced compassion. Basing his argument on groundbreaking scientific findings, Bloom makes the case that some of the worst decisions made by individuals and nations—who to give money to, when to go to war, how to respond to climate change, and who to imprison—are too often motivated by honest, yet misplaced, emotions. With precision and wit, he demonstrates how empathy distorts our judgment in every aspect of our lives, from philanthropy and charity to the justice system; from medical care and education to parenting and marriage. Without empathy, Bloom insists, our decisions would be clearer, fairer, and—yes—ultimately more moral. Brilliantly argued, urgent and humane, AGAINST EMPATHY shows us that, when it comes to both major policy decisions and the choices we make in our everyday lives, limiting our impulse toward empathy is often the most compassionate choice we can make.

Book excerpt: The definitive biography of the revolutionary band Nirvana and its star-crossed frontman Kurt Cobain, hailed by Rolling Stone as “the first [book] to comprehensively tell the band’s tale from Aberdeen, Wash., to world domination” “Amazingly raw and candid . . . an unsparing and extremely honest depiction of the group’s highly tumultuous history . . . Come As You Are is as good as rock bios get.”—Billboard “Just tell the truth. That’ll be better than anything else that’s been written about me.”—Kurt Cobain Nirvana came out of nowhere in 1991 to sell nearly five million copies of their landmark album Nevermind, whose thunderous sound and indelible melodies embodied all the confusion, frustration, and passion of the emerging Generation X. Come As You Are is the close-up, intimate story of Nirvana—the only book with exclusive in-depth interviews with bandmembers Kurt Cobain, Krist Noveselic, and Dave Grohl, as well as friends, relatives, former bandmembers, and associates—now updated to include a final chapter detailing the last year of Kurt Cobain's life, before his tragic suicide in April 1994. Vivid, evocative, and thought-provoking, Come As You Are is an essential document not just for Nirvana fans but for anyone interested in the cultural legacy of the 1990s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning scholar and teacher explores how Shakespeare's greatest characters were built on a learned sense of empathy While exploring Shakespeare's plays with her students, Paula Marantz Cohen discovered that teaching and discussing his plays unlocked a surprising sense of compassion in the classroom. In this short and illuminating book, she shows how Shakespeare's genius lay with his ability to arouse empathy, even when his characters exist in alien contexts and behave in reprehensible ways. Cohen takes her readers through a selection of Shakespeare's most famous plays, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and The Merchant of Venice, to demonstrate the ways in which Shakespeare thought deeply and clearly about how we treat "the other." Cohen argues that only through close reading of Shakespeare can we fully appreciate his empathetic response to race, class, gender, and age. Wise, eloquent, and thoughtful, this book is a forceful argument for literature's power to champion what is best in us.

Book excerpt: Trump's withdrawal of the remaining 1,000 US special forces from Kurdish-held Syria means Moscow and Ankara have emerged as the two main foreign players in Syria's long war. Russia has emerged as Syria's major powerbroker, with powerful sway on all sides. Turkey has suggested it wants Moscow to persuade Damascus to cede it control over a major chunk of territory in the north-east, which would break up Kurdish control. Kurdish officials, however, are hoping Russia can negotiate with Assad to help preserve some of the autonomy they have carved out for themselves during Syria's civil war. Despite the ceasefire, intermittent fighting between the SDF and Ankara's Syrian rebel proxies has continued; with at least 140 civilians having died in recent weeks... Hence it is imperative that a just peace is finally manifested in Syria as soon as possible, and that the Kurdish people will be treated fairly; through the process of constructive mediation and peacebuilding.

This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Austrian SPÖ Party has governed Vienna - and Austria on a national level - for most of the time since the end of WW 2. Having become a proxy party of the right-wing populist ÖVP Party - by falling in line with whatever the ÖVP dictates - the SPÖ is unwilling to implement any much-needed reforms in the country. Hence the reason why inequality and poverty are increasing in Austria dramatically - the SPÖ Party being a willing collaborator in perpetrating inequality, injustice and human rights violations in the Republic of Austria. Austria has also fallen back seven places on the Social Progress Index (SPI); inequality and social discrimination of people increasing dramatically - the ÖVP and the SPÖ Party unwilling to advocate the implementation of a Basic Income Guarantee (BIG); which would be necessary to guarantee basic human rights and to stop the discrimination of unemployed people; which causes grave political instability and civil unrest. In a world where there are no guarantees and as citizens who must be under government rule, we should at least be assured that we will be able to feed, clothe and handle the simplest needs of human beings - hence implementing a basic income is an important prerequisite to counteract inequality and to ensure basic human rights in the International Community. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having emerged from the ashes of the Third Reich, the FPÖ was founded in 1956 by Anton Reinthaller, a former Nazi functionary and SS officer, who was the inaugural leader of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). Since it's establishment, the FPÖ has been responsible for neo-nazi activities, hate speech, press freedom attacks and violations of freedom of expression and belief. With national socialist offenses by the FPÖ increasing in frequency, the FPÖ needs to improve itself - also in view of links between the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings and the far-right Identitarian Movement (IBÖ). Otherwise the FPÖ must be made illegal; as it is Austria's duty to combat the resurgence of neo-Nazi activities by rule of law. It is also imperative to end corruption and rule of law violations in the Austrian government - by bringing down the corrupt political establishment, which includes politicians from all major political parties in Austria - such as the ÖVP, FPÖ, SPÖ and the Austrian Green Party. This includes Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler - as well as Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) - who are responsible for political corruption and criminal activities in the Austrian government; including violations of press freedom. Also, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counterterrorism (BVT) is responsible for the resurgence of neo-Nazi activities and press freedom attacks - which is threatening to make Austria into a Nazi State again - if proper action is not taken to restore rule of law and democratic freedoms. Hence it is imperative that criminals in the BVT and DSN are brought to justice, so that rule of law can be restored in Austria. This includes bringing the fugitive Jan Marsalek to justice - as well as his accomplices in the Austrian government - such as senior Austrian diplomat, Johannes Peterlik, who is suspected of leaking confidential documents linked to the 2018 Novichok poisoning, when rogue Russian agents from the GRU attempted an atrocious assassination on British soil. Hence the NGO BTB- Global Peacebuilding will handle matters in the Republic of Austria in the meantime - until rule-of-law and political stability has been restored in Austria. It should also be noted that Chancellor Karl Nehammer - and his cronies in the Nehammer government - are doing absolutely nothing to manifest equality, equity and a Basic Income Guarantee (BIG) in the Republic of Austria.
