Book excerpt: Personnel, facilities, services and materials were provided for the design, development, fabrication, assembly, installation and testing of electro-mechanical instrumentation comprising the payloads utilized in aerospace vehicles as a part of the upper atmosphere and astronomical research program being conducted by the U.S. Air Force. Special devices such as a field programmable digital timer and low cost vibration recorder suitable for general use in sounding rocketborne sensing payloads were developed. Also developed was a control system to focus a cryogenically cooled infrared sensing instrument on a particular star. This contract also entailed the design, fabrication, assembly and testing of instruments for the remote operation and monitoring of the rocketborne apparatus from a blockhouse along with recovery and retesting of certain instruments. Provision was made for the preparation and reproduction of all necessary mechanical detail and assembly drawings and circuitry schematics, as well as for participation in the pre-flight, flight and post-flight field operations associated with the assembly, preparation and launching of the probing vehicles at the various launch sites selected by the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory for the conducting of rocket-borne experiments.

Book excerpt: A problem frequently encountered in engineering design concerns the positioning of a number of components having varying shapes and sizes within a container or housing. Usually, the housing has fixed conformation and dimensions for technical or esthetic reasons, or because it must comply with some standard mounting arrangement. A way must be found to place all of the parts within the shell, subject to a set of constraints on relative positions, inter-unit spacings and the accessibility of controls and connections. The mock-up method has proved to be a satisfactory approach in the design of rocket payloads at the National Research Council. In planning and preparing a rocket payload, space must be allocated to the experimenters' packages within the cylindrical magnesium forward-body casting which forms the skin of the rocket payload. An efficient, economical method of achieving a layout with a minimum of error and difficulty was devised using full-size plastic models. Models of the instrumentation packages were made easily and quickly from lightweight, inexpensive polystyrene or polyurethane foam, and a cylinder of clear acrylic plastic was used to simulate the forward-body casting. Book excerpt: Operation PCA 69 was a coordinated rocket, satellite, aircraft and ground measurement program designed to study the physical chemistry of the ionospheric D-region in conjunction with an by means of a solar proton event. During the event of 2 November 1969 a total of 36 rockets were launched at Churchill, Canada over a two-day period in coordinated series for the measurement of various atmospheric parameters with emphasis on the night-day variations, but including measurements during the transition periods of sunrise and sunset. In addition, 11 rockets were launched to provide certification and background information. Electron and proton flux measurements were made on several satellites. Ground measurements including 30 MHz riometers, magnetometer, ionosonde, and partial reflection experiments were made at Churchill during the period, and aircraft optical measurements were made on 2 November 1969. A conference was held at Boston College, Massachusetts on 31 March and 1 April 1970 to assess the quantity and quality of the data. Preliminary results are presented either as papers or summaries.
