Download or read book A New Race of Men written by Michael Fry and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War opened and closed Scotland's greatest century: a pitiless part in the defeat of Naploeon in 1815, a huge blood-sacrifice for the sake of victory from 1914. In between came the greatest contributions to the progress and happiness of the rest of mankind that the Scots have ever made - in everything from the combine harvester to the mackintosh to anaesthesia. It was a supremely successful achieving society yet one not without deep flaws, in its urban poverty, its destruction of the environment, its religious intolerance, its moral hypocrisy, its crushing of Highland culture. Michael Fry shows, with an emphasis always on the human story, how a succession of deep crises undermined the usually tranquil and prosperous surface of life in Victorian Scotland to leave a legacy of paradox that the modern nation has even today yet to overcome.
Download or read book Sexual Cultures written by Jeffrey Weeks and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-07-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new sociology of sexuality has a two-fold aim: to demonstrate how the social shapes the sexual; and to analyse how the sexual in turn becomes a focal point for personal identity, cultural anxiety value debates and political action. Drawing on papers from the 1994 British Sociological Association annual conference on 'Sexualities in Social Context', this volume brings together key contributors to this stimulating new approach. Topics covered include theoretical developments, the relationship between history and contemporary controversies, community and identity, especially in the context of AIDS, value conflicts and changes in the meanings of intimacy. The book as a whole offers a significant intervention into debates on sexuality, and a thoughtful contribution to the broadening of the sociological agenda.

Book Synopsis Illegitimacy, Sex, and Society by : Andrew Blaikie
Download or read book Illegitimacy, Sex, and Society written by Andrew Blaikie and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illegitimacy, Sex and Society is an original and compelling study of illegitimacy in relation to Scottish social and religious life and social structure from 1750 to 1900. Andrew Blaikie uses previously unstudied material to produce an interdisciplinary critique and alternative account showing that bastardy was much more acceptable in a Calvinist society than has generally been thought. He outlines the debate and reviews the relevant literature and has found that illegitimacy in the studied period was synonymous with a variety of social conditions (a shortage of leasehold accommodation, for example) and was integrated into the norms of local society. This microhistorical approach is an illuminating case study that is relevant in the continuing debate on unmarried parenthood.

He considers the relevant legislation and systems for coping with the street poor, from the 1824 Vagrancy Act and accompanying improvements in policing, through the casual ward systems of the workhouses and the role of common lodging houses, to the development of Social Services in the 1940s and local authority provision of accommodation.
