Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This superb work is sure to win a name for itself as one of the major commentaries on the Epistle to the Hebrews. The principal purpose of this substantial volume is to clarify the meaning of Hebrews, long considered a complicated and obscure book. Paul Ellingworth's fine-tooth-comb coverage of Hebrews looks at the text up close and in a broad light, enabling the reader to see the forest as well as the trees. In his determined quest to understand Hebrews, Ellingworth begins with a detailed study of the Greek text, working outward to consider the wider context, linguistic questions, and the relation of Hebrews to other early Christian writings and to the Old Testament. Nonbiblical writings such as Philo and the Dead Sea Scrolls, though less directly related to Hebrews, are considered where appropriate. Unveiling the discourse structure of this carefully written letter, Ellingworth's commentary helps make coherent sense of the complexities of Hebrews. As a result of his exhaustive study, Ellingworth finds Hebrews to be primarily a pastoral, not a polemical, writing. Showing how Hebrews beautifully emphasizes the supremacy of Christ, Ellingworth concludes that the essential purpose of the epistle - which maintains the continuity of God's people before and after Christ - is to encourage readers to base their lives on nothing other and nothing less than Jesus. A substantive bibliography and a comprehensive introduction precede Ellingworth's commentary, and three indexes - of subjects, authors, and Greek words discussed - conclude the volume.

Book excerpt: The second annual St. Andrews Conference on Scripture and Theology brought leading biblical scholars and systematic theologians together in conversation, seeking to bridge the growing gap between these disciplines. Reflecting the convergence of the Old Testament s cultic theology, Hellenistic ideas, and early Christian thinking, the epistle to the Hebrews provides a perfect foundation for this fruitful dialogue. / The contributors examine a number of key theological themes in the letter to the Hebrews: the person and nature of the Son, his high-priestly work, cosmology, the epistle s theology of Scripture, supersessionism, the call to faith, and more. Unlike many modern treatments, this substantial volume considers Hebrews in both its ancient context and against our modern backdrop. / Edward Adams, Loveday Alexander, Harold W. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study attempts to analyse the text of Hebrews with a method of discourse analysis primarily based on a form of systemic functional linguistics developed for Hellenistic Greek, but it is also informed by other linguistic studies. It begins with a general survey of the literature that is either influential or representative of approaches to the structure of Hebrews. The survey is followed by an introduction to the terminology and definitions of discourse analysis, as well as the theory behind the methodology, and describes a procedure for analysing text. Hebrews is treated as having three sections. The first section of Hebrews (1:1-4:16) demonstrates the organization of the units, the topic of the units, the prominent text, and the relationship of the first section with the rest of the discourse. The second section of Hebrews (4:11-10:25) is described in two parts (4:11-7:28 and 8:1-10:25) because of its length. There is an overlap between the first and second sections in 4:11-16 and between the second and third sections in 10:19-25. Both of these passages have a concluding function for the preceding co-text and a staging function for the following co-text, so that they look backwards and forwards. The third and final section in 10:19-13:25 contains the climax or discourse peak. The study is concluded with a description of the coherence of the discourse and a presentation of a mental representation of the text. JSNTS and Studies in New Testament Greek subseries

Book excerpt: The mystery of the authorship of the Epistle to the Hebrews has been the subject of endless debate. The only comprehensive book on the subject, Priscilla's Letter is a scholarly examination of this puzzling New Testament question. Ruth Hoppin presents a meticulously researched case in support of the theory that Priscilla -- a woman who was a leader in the early church and an associate of Paul -- is ultimately the only suspect who meets all the qualifications for the authorship. Originally published in 1997, Priscilla's Letter disappeared from the market after only five months of promotion and general availability. The author became convinced that her publisher deliberately suppressed the book, presumably under pressure from religious extremists who regard the concept of female authorship of any part of the Bible subversive and intolerable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible for a serious New Testament scholar to accept the apostle Paul as the author of the book of Hebrews? Over the last few centuries the authorship of the book of Hebrews has been a contentious topic, but lately a strong scholarly consensus has emerged that Paul was not the author. There is no similar consensus about who did author the book; the consensus is entirely negative. Nonetheless, it takes some courage for a scholar to risk his reputation by challenging a so thoroughly assured conclusion of so many scholars. Yet this is precisely what Dr. David Alan Black has done. In this book he adapts some of his previous scholarly work for a broader audience, demonstrating both how one goes about determining the authorship of an ancient work, and also how one challenges a scholarly consensus. That is why we have chosen this volume as the inaugural volume of our Topic Line Drives series. Millions of churchgoers look to the introductions to various books in their study Bibles to answer questions of date, authorship, and background. But only those who read more than one introduction will be fully aware of the disagreements among scholars about those conclusions. How is it that scholars make a determination about authorship? Dr. Black has paid his dues in the practice of scholarship, and here he demonstrates how one challenges such a consensus. At the same time he will guide the reader through the various factors that influence a decision about the authorship of a book. We hope this book will give new life to your Bible study and will challenge you to study further, not just about this subject, but about many others. This book is for those who want to dig deeper than the notes in a study Bible and who want to understand what stands behind those conclusions.

Book excerpt: The epistle of Hebrews is the only New Testament book whose author remains a mystery. Although some Bibles call it "The Epistle of Paul to the Hebrews" his name does not appear in the letter itself. Many say that the text of Hebrews precludes Paul having written it. Ancient tradition variously ascribes it to Barnabas, Paul, or even to Luke or Clement. Modern scholars have suggested names ranging from Apollos to Priscilla. Which of these, if any, wrote Hebrews? Dr. Criswell, best known for his Biblical Controversies series, sets out to answer that very question. He examines all the evidence for the authorship of Hebrews. When was it written? From whence was it written? To whom was it written? What criteria fits the proposed authors? Criswell lays out evidence both for and against each candidate, including charts. A full chapter is dedicated to each of these major candidates including Paul, Barnabas, Luke, Apollos, Priscilla, Aquila, Clement, Silas, and Mark. In addition, there is a chapter devoted to other suggestions including Aristion, Epaphras, Jude, Peter, Philip the Evangelist, Timothy, and Titus. Anonymous also includes an appendix which discusses the place of Hebrews in the Biblical canon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This keepsake hard cover edition of The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the HEBREWS was taken from the King James translation of the Bible. The King James Translation is a masterwork of style, and the most important book in the English language, it has been the driving force in shaping the English-speaking world for hundreds of years. Hebrews opens with an exaltation of Jesus as the radiance of God's glory, the express image of his being, and upholding all things by his powerful word. The book was written because some Christians had begun to doubt whether Jesus could really be the Messiah, because they believed the Messiah prophesied in the Hebrew Scriptures was to be a militant king and destroy the enemies of his people. Jesus, however, came as a mere man who was arrested by the Jewish leaders and who suffered and was crucified by the Romans. Although he was resurrected, he still left the Earth and his people now faced persecution rather than victory. Hebrews solves this problem by arguing that the Hebrew Scriptures also foretold that the Messiah would be a priest and Jesus came to fulfill that role. His role as a king was yet to come, and so those who follow him should be patient and not be surprised that they suffer for now.
