Book excerpt: A revisionist examination of the important, yet often misrepresented, interplay between ideology and pragmatism in the interaction between the Third World and superpowers, this book explores the dynamics between Nigeria and the USSR from the time of Nigerian independence in 1960 up to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The author effectively argues that while the generic West may have underdeveloped' Africa, the continent's response to the challenges and opportunities presented by the Northern Hemisphere was progressively active and enterprising.'

Book excerpt: The author recollects his quest of a better future for himself, his family, and his native country stemming from ideals he obtained from his childhood Western education and conversion to the Christian faith. His hopes were thrwarated by Nigeria's political and religious troubles resulting in his exile to America, then seeing his family broken time and again. Though forthrightly recalling these failures, their remain for the author: his faith in God, his love for his family and countrymen, and his hope for the future of both. These memoirs include some plactical advice for Nigeria that are based on the beginnings of his adopted United States of America. There is needed a Plymouth Rock type of partnership between government and an enterprising community of faith. From pioneering studies developed by the author and his friends, Cephas Tardzer explains how this can begin in Benue State. Duffel bag pictured on front cover is worn by the elders of the author's TIV tribe, symbolizing their responsibility for the welfare of the people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1960, two-thirds of very large governmental projects in Nigeria have not only failed, but been abandoned mid-course. This presents a bigger failure rate than mega projects elsewhere, and yet there is no available data or analysis to help us understand the reasons behind such failures. This book provides an authoritative examination into why very large projects in Nigeria have failed so badly, and provides practical recommendations on how the Nigerian government can improve its project performance. Drawing on data from 38 very large projects (19 completed and 19 abandoned) with a total budget of over $25B, this book presents detailed analysis of these projects and in-depth case studies 11 of the projects, and presents lessons for improvement. Through this, the authors have identified a small number of key success drivers, and argue that making moderate improvements on any of them would, on average, save hundreds of millions of dollars on one large project alone. This open access book is a game-changer in the management of government mega projects in Nigeria. With clear implications for other developing economies, this is a vital resource for project management practitioners, executives and civil servants. Jimoh Ibrahim is a prominent businessman in Nigeria. He is also currently completing his Business Doctorate degree at the University of Cambridge, Judge Business School, and he is working on establishing a new University in Nigeria. Christoph Loch is Professor of Operations and Technology Management at the Cambridge Judge Business School. He served as the Dean of the school from 2011 to 2021. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigerians are troubled about the capability of political institutions in Nigeria to curb religious threats, thus maintaining security with minimum damage in preventing the occurrence of religious eruptions. The study examines the debate on institutionalizing the Islamic Law referred to as Sharia at the Federal level. The book ascertains the impact of religion (and ethnicity) on the Nigerian political institutions especially the Executive arm of the Government. The study examines the 1977 and 1988 Sharia debates at the Constituent Assemblies. Specific issues were addressed in the book, such as the Organization of Islamic Conference, Federal Government appointments, religious pilgrimages, the use of Arabic on Nigerian currencies, public holidays, work-free Friday, and the religious leaders, which affected the peaceful coexistence among Nigerians since the 1977 Sharia debate at the Constituent Assembly. The findings revealed that Nigerians were discontented with their political leaders over the use of religion in the public places. In addition to that, some Nigerian religious leaders infiltrated intra- and interreligious conflicts in Nigeria. However, the prospect of Nigeria as a nation lies with the leadership and followership. The study concludes that people's mentality determines the type of leaders they want, which is responsible for Nigeria's self-inflicted problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JS Tarka occupies a unique place in the history of regionalism and nationalism in Nigeria among Nigerias historical greats: Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello and Zik; while also in a class of his own. In this book, the author reveals a political enigma and leader, his exemplary vision, aura, political sagacity, transformational charismatic leadership and the attractive personality that endeared him to his political contemporaries and the masses of the geographical geopolitical area referred to as Middle Belt. Joseph Sarwuan Tarka, the father of the Middle Belt politics, while he lived, pursued the good of his people in every way he could. His belief in political alliance and unity were central to the unity of the North and its political domination of that historic era. Unity was his religion, what he lived, fought, and died for. He was a great man whose contributions to Nigerias development were remarkable. It would not be an understatement to say that JS was the founder of the National Party of Nigeria and was able to bring all the minorities in Nigeria within the party. The entire Western Nigeria was won by UPN, the East by NPP, and the far North by PRP and GNPP. Shagaris presidency was decided by the minorities in Nigeria because of Tarka. From opposition politics to national statesmanship, Joseph Tarka grew to become one of Nigerias historic greats. He remains one of Nigerias greatest men.

Book excerpt: With the prevailing violent conflict situation of our world, perpetuated sometimes even in the name of religion, humanity today faces extinction. To reverse this ugly trend, humanity has no choice than to build a society where every tribe and tongue can coexist in peace. This work analyzed the violent conflicts from anthropological, behavioral, politico-philosophical, and theological perspectives, and makes a demand on humanity to save herself through proper education and dialogue with all men and religions. Lotanna Olisaemeka is a researcher in Missiology affiliated with the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule, Vallendar, Germany.
