Book Synopsis Essentials of Landscape Ecology by : Kimberly A. With
Download or read book Essentials of Landscape Ecology written by Kimberly A. With and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-07 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human activity during the Anthropocene has transformed landscapes worldwide on a scale that rivals or exceeds even the largest of natural forces. Landscape ecology has emerged as a science to investigate the interactions between natural and anthropogenic landscapes and ecological processes across a wide range of scales and systems: from the effects of habitat or resource distributions on the individual movements, gene flow, and population dynamics of plants and animals; to the human alteration of landscapes affecting the structure of biological communities and the functioning of entire ecosystems; to the sustainable management of natural resources and the ecosystem goods and services upon which society depends. This novel and comprehensive text presents the principles, theory, methods, and applications of landscape ecology in an engaging and accessible format that is supplemented by numerous examples and case studies from a variety of systems, including freshwater and marine "scapes."
Book Synopsis Ecosystems of Disturbed Ground by : L.R. Walker
Download or read book Ecosystems of Disturbed Ground written by L.R. Walker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-12-17 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the human population inexorably grows, its cumulative impact on the Earth's resources is hard to ignore. The ability of the Earth to support more humans is dependent on the ability of humans to manage natural resources wisely. Because disturbance alters resource levels, effective management requires understanding of the ecology of disturbance. This book is the first to take a global approach to the description of both natural and anthropogenic disturbance regimes that physically impact the ground. Natural disturbances such as erosion, volcanoes, wind, herbivory, flooding and drought plus anthropogenic disturbances such as foresty, grazing, mining, urbanization and military actions are considered. Both disturbance impacts and the biotic recovery are addressed as well as the interactions of different types of disturbance. Other chapters cover processes that are important to the understanding of disturbance of all types including soil processes, nutrient cycles, primary productivity, succession, animal behaviour and competition. Humans react to disturbances by avoiding, exacerbating, or restoring them or by passing environmental legislation. All of these issues are covered in this book. Managers need better predictive models and robust data-collections that help determine both site-specfic and generalized responses to disturbance. Multiple disturbances have a complex effect on both physical and biotic processes as they interact. This book provides a wealth of detail about the process of disturbance and recovery as well as a synthesis of the current state of knowledge about disturbance theory, with extensive documentation.

Book Synopsis Post-ice Storm Tree Damage in Four Eastern Ontario Woodlots by : Jennifer Kelly-Syrota
Download or read book Post-ice Storm Tree Damage in Four Eastern Ontario Woodlots written by Jennifer Kelly-Syrota and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A severe glaze storm in January 1998 affected a broad geographic region encompassing parts of eastern Canada and the adjacent north-eastern United States. Ice accumulations were estimated at over 100mm in some areas. Over 3 million hectares of forests and woodlots were damaged in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec. One of the hardest hit areas was that around Winchester, Ontario. Four woodlots were studied in Winchester Township, Ontario following the ice storm to investigate post-storm damage patterns to present hardwood species. Over 1000 hardwood trees were examined for degree of damage based on percentage of crown loss. The results indicate a varied response to glaze accumulation depending on tree morphology, size, species and position in the woodlot. Based on a susceptibility index of vulnerability to ice damage ' Populus tremuloides', 'Acer rubrum' and 'A. saccharinum' and the 'A. rubrum' and 'A. saccharinum ' hybrid typically sustained severe damage. 'Tilia americana, Ulmus americana, A. saccharum, Fraxinus Americana' and 'F. nigra' sustained intermediate damage. 'Quercus macrocarpa' and 'Amelanchier laevis' sustained minor damage. Varied response to ice accumulation is dependent on location and biological factors including location within woodlot and canopy, aspect, tree diameter and height.
Book Synopsis Tree Survival and Growth Following Ice Storm Injury by : Walter C. Shortle
Download or read book Tree Survival and Growth Following Ice Storm Injury written by Walter C. Shortle and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 25 million acres of forest from northwestern New York and southern Quebec to the south-central Maine coast were coated with ice from a 3-day storm in early January 1998. This storm was unusual in its size and the duration of icing. Trees throughout the region were injured as branches and stems broke and forks split under the weight of the ice. These injuries reduced the size of tree crowns and exposed wood to infection that can lead to wood decay. In addition to regional assessments, forest managers need to know how much damage to expect in the years following the storm due to loss of wood quality, loss of tree growth, or tree death. The purpose of this study was to determine tree survival, stem growth, and response to infection following injury to major hardwood tree species from the 1998 ice storm.
Book Synopsis Plant Disturbance Ecology by : Edward A. Johnson
Download or read book Plant Disturbance Ecology written by Edward A. Johnson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disturbance ecology continues to be an active area of research, having undergone advances in many areas in recent years. One emerging direction is the increased coupling of physical and ecological processes, in which disturbances are increasingly traced back to mechanisms that cause the disturbances themselves, such as earth surface processes, mesoscale, and larger meteorological processes, and the ecological effects of interest are increasingly physiological. Plant Disturbance Ecology, 2nd Edition encourages movement away from the informal, conceptual approach traditionally used in defining natural disturbances and clearly presents how scientists can use a multitude of approaches in plant disturbance ecology. This edition includes nine revised chapters from the first edition, as well new, more comprehensive chapters on fire disturbance and beaver disturbance. Edited by leading experts in the field, Plant Disturbance Ecology, 2nd Edition is an essential resource for scientists interested in understanding plant disturbance and ecological processes. Advances understanding of natural disturbances by combining geophysical and ecological processes Provides a framework for collaboration between geophysical scientists and ecologists studying natural disturbances Includes fully updated research with 5 new chapters and revision of 11 chapters from the first edition
Book Synopsis Climate Variability and Ecosystem Response at Long-Term Ecological Research Sites by : David Greenland
Download or read book Climate Variability and Ecosystem Response at Long-Term Ecological Research Sites written by David Greenland and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-09 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in the Long-Term Ecological Research Network Series would present the work that has been done and the understanding and database that have been developed by work on climate change done at all the LTER sites. Global climate change is a central issue facing the world, which is being worked on by a very large number of scientists across a wide range of fields. The LTER sites hold some of the best available data measuring long term impacts and changes in the environment, and the research done at these sites has not previously been made widely available to the broader climate change research community. This book should appeal reasonably widely outside the ecological community, and because it pulls together information from all 20 research sites, it should capture the interest of virtually the entire LTER research community.
