Book excerpt: This article uses the Public Use Sample file of the 1986 Canadian census to characterize and explain the interprovincial migration patterns of the foreign-born in Canada. Simple overall in- and outmigration rates are calculated for the foreign-born and compared to the interprovincial migration rates for Canadian-born migrants, specifically primary, return and onward migrants. A two-level nested logit model is then applied for foreign-born migrants age 20-64 to study the effects of personal factors and provincial attributes on their interprovincial migration patterns. The foreign-born have higher in- and outmigration rates than primary migrants, with Ontario having a strong ability to attract and retain the foreign-born. Despite these differences, the foreign-born respond to economic variables in a rational way and relatively little of the migration decision process can be explained by place-of-birth effects. Selectivity with respect to personal factors (i.e., education, age, sex, family type) is similar to the Canadian-born.

This study is based on census statistics from 1901 to 1961, and more particularly from 1921 to 1961 ... The second section of the paper desribes the growth and distribution of the Canadian population since the beginning of the twentieth century. The urban-rural and farm-nonfarm distributions are considered along with the geographic distribution of the population. This section ends with a description of the relative magnitude of farm and nonfarm migration. In the third section, redistribution of the Canadian population during the forty-year period from 1921 to 1961 is discussed in some detail; natural increase and net migration of the total, urban and rural population in each province are examined. A final section is devoted to a discussion of the relationship between internal migration and the level and rate of economic activity and of some specific factors which affect mobility.

It sets out some working hypotheses on the determinants and socioeconomic implications of South-South migration. Contrary to popular perception that migration is mostly a South-North phenomenon, South-South migration is large. Available data from national censuses suggest that nearly half of the migrants from developing countries reside in other developing countries. Almost 80 percent of South-South migration takes place between countries with contiguous borders. Estimates of South-South remittances range from 9 to 30 percent of developing countries' remittance receipts in 2005. Although the impact of South-South migration on the income of migrants and natives is smaller than for South-North migration, small increases in income can have substantial welfare implications for the poor. The costs of South-South remittances are even higher than those of North-South remittances. These findings suggest that policymakers should pay attention to the complex challenges that developing countries face not only as countries of origin, but also as countries of destination.

Book excerpt: Data from the 1991 Census of Canada provide direct evidence on the migration experience of earlier immigrant cohorts in the five years prior to the census. They also provide indirect evidence for the internal redistribution of those immigrants who arrived in Canada between 1986 and 1991. This paper shows that, although local mobility is common for all segments of Canadian society, including both native and foreign-born, interprovincial redistribution shifts are nonetheless significant. Shifts in provincial populations attributable to migration over five years may exceed 10 percent, while the short-run impacts on recent immigrants may be even larger. Data on the foreign-born are compared to information about the internal migration patterns of the native-born. Foreign-born and native-born migration patterns are similar in three ways: (1) migration tends to be out of the Atlantic and prairie provinces and into Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta; (2) migration tends to be from less to more populated provinces; and (3) foreign-born and native-born migration appears to respond to differences in unemployment, wage rate, and labour force size differences in the same manner. Nevertheless, there are differences. The native-born tend to move from provinces with a higher proportion of foreign-born population, while the foreign-born are more likely to stay in provinces with a higher proportion of the foreign-born of the same ethnicity as themselves. Analysis of the migratory behavior of recent immigrant cohorts provides evidence that there are distinct patterns of higher and lower migration for some ethnic origin groups. Moreover, groups vary in their response to the proportion of foreign-born of the same ethnicity.
