Book excerpt: Intra-industry trade (IIT) has gained in importance across Asia as a result of the rapid growth of Asian economies and their key role in the international fragmentation of production. This paper examines the level of IIT for 22 countries in East, Southeast, South, and Central Asia in 2003. IIT is measured as a multilateral trade-weighted index and is reported for ten different categories of goods in the primary and secondary sectors. In addition, the determinants of IIT are investigated using a Tobit regression model. The results indicate that ASEAN and the high-income countries in East Asia exhibit the highest levels of IIT, followed closely by China and India. R&D spending, openness, and a higher share of manufactured exports were found to promote IIT, while geographical distance and the difference in economic size had an adverse effect, especially for manufactured goods. The ASEAN free trade area was most prominently associated with IIT across all SITC categories. Central and South Asian regional trade agreements had a positive influence on IIT in primary products.

Book excerpt: This dissertation reports the results of three empirical studies concerning the pattern of bilateral trade among countries of East Asia and the Pacific Rim countries--the so-called 'Asia-Pacific' region. The first study tests several hypotheses concerning the determinants of bilateral intra-industry trade for a sample of 15 Asia-Pacific countries. It is concluded that similarity in relative factor endowments between two countries results in a higher share of intra-industry trade in the total bilateral trade (Sii) between them; however, that similarity in country size results in a lower Sii, which contradicts some findings of previous studies. Economies of scale were not found, while distance and tariffs were found to be significant determinants of intra-industry trade. The interesting result was that intra-industry trade appears to be characterized by vertically differentiated products, suggesting that the pattern of specialization was affected by the difference in technological capabilities between the developed and less developed countries in the region. The second study uses gravity-type models to make inferences about relative factor intensities of several manufacturing groups and to test the Linder hypothesis that the more similar the per capita incomes between two countries, the larger the trade in manufactured goods between them. It is found that for 1980-1993 there occurred no significant change in capital-labor intensities in the composition of the manufacturing sectors. This suggests that the relocation of manufacturing from developed to developing countries that occurred in search for low wage workers did not necessarily lead to less capital-intensive technologies. The Linder hypothesis was not found to be supported. The third study assesses the desirability of regionalization in the Asia-Pacific region. ASEAN was not, while APEC was found to be a natural trading bloc. This implies that geographical proximity between ASEAN countries is not sufficient to create a natural trading bloc. The strongest natural trading partners were found to be the East Asian countries and the U.S., suggesting that policies that exclude the U.S. from the East Asian trading bloc are welfare-worsening. The formation of a free trade area among a group of countries may result in a welfare gain if their ex-ante intra-bloc trade exceeds their external trade.

The emergence of global supply chains and their increasing role in trade patterns allowed emerging market economies to boost their inputs in high-technology exports and is associated with increased trade interconnectedness. The analysis points to one important trend taking place over the last decade: the emergence of China as a major systemically important trading hub, reflecting not only the size of trade but also the increase in number of its significant trading partners.

Book excerpt: China and ASEAN are recognized as the most important markets in the world, hence they have emerged as global factories and parts production bases. And trade between China and ASEAN is rapidly expanding and ASEAN has taken position as one of China's three major trading partners. Over the last 20 years, there has been a rapid increase in intra-industry trade where differentiated products are traded within the same industries between China and ASEAN countries. Empirical analysis on determinants of the international specialization structure between China and ASEAN countries shows that the deepening structure of vertical international specialization between the two regions over the past 20 years has been directly influenced by variables representing national characteristics, such as distance (trading cost), common language, the size of the national economy and income gap as well as intra-regional foreign direct investment.

Book excerpt: Quantitative Analysis of Newly Evolving Patterns of International Trade offers a variety of perspectives on new forms and developments of international trade and related activities for Japan, the United States, China, and some other important trading countries, to develop new methods and data for measuring the factor contents of emerging new modes of international trade. Such methods and data are crucially important for evaluating impacts of the new modes on factor markets in the United States, Japan, and other major trading countries, and also for forecasting the future development of world trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), evaluating welfare gains from trade, estimating impacts of free trade agreements, and designing effective trade and FDI policies.

Book excerpt: Intra-industry trade (IIT) has emerged as a major area of research in the analysis of international and intra-regional specialization. This book highlights the changes which the Indian economy has witnessed in the past two decades following the economic liberalization of the 1990s. It has been revealed that there are comparatively few studies in the context of developing economies which focus on the country-industry-specific determinants of aggregate and sectoral IIT. The book incorporates several hypotheses to analyze demand-driven, supply-induced, industry-specific, and policy-oriented drivers influencing the level of bilateral aggregate and sectoral IIT in the Indian context. Moreover, several trade-related, labor specific and trade overlap induced factors dictate the growth trajectory and the employment level of an economy. Therefore, the current research conducts an empirical analysis to examine each hypothesis and provide significant findings to explore the relationship between key economic variables, their interaction effects, and their impact on the growth of the Indian economy.

Book excerpt: This paper documents the steady decline in Central Asia's intra-regional trade since the mid-1990s, defying the 3-fold increase in overall trade from 1996 to 2005. Estimations of potential trade using gravity model confirm that the Central Asian countries, relative to their level of income and other individual characteristics, tend to overtrade with the rest of the world, but significantly undertrade within the region. We explain the regional trade puzzle by employing Helpman's test, which tests the determinants of intra-industry trade based on product differentiation and increasing returns to scale. Helpman's test indicates that Central Asia as a whole has little intra-industry trade. Overall trade is found to be mostly of inter-industry type, driven by natural resource endowment of these countries. We conclude that Central Asia's trade patterns, particularly its trade puzzle, seem to be a result of complex factors such as region's strong comparative advantage in natural resource-based exports, lack of regional integration, and trade-conducive policies across the region.

Book excerpt: Much of the analysis of infrastructure's impact on trade costs focuses on conditions in developed countries. This book makes an invaluable contribution to our understanding by examining the situation in developing Asia, the world's most populous and fastest growing region. This study analyzes and draws policy implications from infrastructure's central role in lowering Asia's trade costs. Infrastructure is shown to be a cost-effective means of lowering trade costs and thereby promoting regional growth and integration. This book combines thematic and country studies, while breaking new ground in.

Book excerpt: This authoritative new collection presents a selection of previously published seminal articles that have led to the development of intra-industry trade theory and empirical research. Parts I and II cover the pioneering research in the 1960s and a number of models of intra-industry trade that were developed from 1979 to the present day. Parts III and IV look at the empirical research problems in the choice of measure of intra-industry trade and empirical studies that seek to identify the nature of this trade. Part V deals with the role of the multinational corporation and part VI completes the collection with articles that look at extensions to asset markets and applications to other problems such as the geography of trade and rules of origin. Intra-Industry Trade will be an invaluable source of reference to all international trade economists and libraries specialising in this area.
