Book excerpt: Large-scale patterned ground in the Donnelly Dome area of central Alaska consists of polygons 25 to 46 m in diameter bounded by shallow troughs 1 to 2 m wide that form the sides of the polygons. The troughs are underlain by wedge-shaped masses of sediments that extend downward 2 to 3 m. Texture of the sediments of the wedges is distinct from that of the poorly stratified glacial outwash gravel that the wedges transect. Sediments of the wedge vary texturally along the strike and vertically within a given wedge. The coarsest material in the wedge is about 75 mm in diameter, which is the same size as the coarsest material in the outwash. The fine material in the wedges is silt, the same as that which blankets the area. The patterned ground of the Donnelly Dome area originated during Wisconsin time when the mean annual air temperature was at least 3C colder than now. Wigh the warming of the climate in post-Wisconsin time most of the perennially frozen gravel thawed and the ice wedges melted. The voids created by the melting of the ice wedges were filled with sediment that was washed from the surface or collapsed from the thawed sides of the voids. The troughs bounding the polygons are now, however, no longer underlain with ice wedges but with ice wedge pseudomorphs (fossil ice wedges). (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Juneau Icefield Research Project (JIRP) was formed to find a prototype area to study Alaska's coastal glaciers and trends in climatic change. For the past 57 years JIRP has conducted a systematic study of key receding and advancing glaciers, including Lemon Creek and Taku Glaciers. From this study, a model has been developed to study the mass balance of these glaciers and their relation to general atmospheric circulation. Taku's mass balance was expected to provide a meaningful assessment of flakier climate relations and environmental trends, specifically the increase in atmospheric trace element pollution and global warming.Juneau Icefield Research Project (1949-1958) is represented by 15 chapters, organized in four parts: Background of the Project, Early Years of the Project (1949-1952, Later Years of the Project (1953-1958), and Summation and Epilogue. After describing the Project's background, Chapters 3 through 12 cover year-by-year activities, personnel, logistics, and research of the Taku and Lemon Creek Glaciers. These chapters included day-to-day journal entries that represent a record of the informal itineraries covering the course of the study. Chapters 13 and 14 summarize glaciological findings on Taku Glacier and the status of hydrological budgets on Lemon Creek Glacier through the International Geophysical year (1957-19658). The final chapter of the text is an overview of paleoecological work by the Project in North Pacific America brought into the context of modern research with the recognition of glacier-climate cycles. * Documents the study Juneau Icefield Research Project on a year-by-year account covering activities, personnel, logistics and research * Discusses the model developed from the JIRP and explains its importance in predicting future climate changes* Presents the information with day-to-day journal entries, making the text attractive and easy to read

This book was released on 2005 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Periglacial landforms, called patterned ground, change the vegetation, microtopography and organic content of the surface soil horizons. Because they are uniquely products of the periglacial environment, changes in that environment affect their distribution and activity. As surface features, they mitigate heat and mass transfer processes between the land and atmosphere. For environmental change detection, the state of the soil and active layer must be monitored across temporal and spatial scales that include these features. It is suggested here that changes in the state of the active layer due to the abrupt spatial changes in surface soil character lead to changes in the distribution of soil components, soil bulk thermal properties and the thermal and hydrological fluxes result. The determination of soil volumetric moisture content using the relative dielectric permittivity of the soil is extended to include live and dead low-density feathermoss. High temporal resolution monitoring of the thermal conductivity of mineral and organic soil horizons over multiple annual cycles is introduced, along with a new method for analyzing the results of transient heat pulse sensor measurements. These results are applied to studies of frost boils and soil stripes in the northern foothills of the Brooks Range in Alaska. Active layer ice dynamics determine the thermal properties of the frozen soil in the frost boil pedon. Annual heaving and subsiding of the ground surface reflects these changes in ice content and can be used to estimate active layer ice content as a function of depth. These estimates correlate with bulk soil thermal diffusivity, inferred as a function of depth from temperature data. Differences in soil thermal diffusivity determine thaw depth differences between frost boil and tundra, and between wet and dry soil stripes. For the latter, deeper subsurface flow through the high organic content wet stripes is delayed until mid-summer; when it does occur, it has a large component normal to the hillslope as a consequence of differential heave. Dynamics in these periglacial landforms can be identified from surface features, highlighting the potential for scaling up their net effect using remote sensing techniques"--Leaf iii.
