Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The demand for healthcare providers such as Physician Assistants is ever increasing with the growing and aging United States population. The number of Physician Assistant education programs as well as practicing Physician Assistants is growing at an astronomical rate, making the general population’s understanding of this profession more important than ever. Therefore, this study is aimed at assessing the degree of understanding of the Physician Assistant profession across the Twin Cities metro and south central Minnesota. It also assesses if a gap in understanding exists across age groups within these areas. The study utilized a web-based questionnaire consisting of 12 original questions, distributed via the online database Survey Monkey in order to assess this population’s understanding of the Physician Assistant profession. A total of 145 participants completed the questionnaire with 33 participants in the 18-35-year-old age group, 66 participants in the 36-55-year-old age group, and 46 participants in the >55-year-old age group. On average, participants scored 58% in the 18-35-year-old age group, 56% in the 36-55-year-old age group, and 59% in the >55-year-old age group. Data analysis revealed an insufficient knowledge of the PA profession for each of the three age groups studied. Additionally, there was no correlation found between age group and knowledge of the PA profession.."--Leaf ii.

Book excerpt: In reading ALL IN: The Making of a PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, one begins to understand that the PA has chosen a vocation in which work will permeate all the hours of a day. Being a PA is an extension of the Hippocratic Oath to treat the sick to the best of one's ability, preserve patient's privacy, teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation. A Physician Assistant's greatest value is being both available and approachable in providing knowledge and skills while continuing to learn from patients, their peers, and the physicians they are working with. This author shares a "slice of this life" during her PA employment of 38 years. The PA profession was established in 1967 with the return of medics from the Vietnam war and now more than 150,000 PA's practice in outpatient offices, hospitals, urgent care centers, in surgery, and in the emergency rooms. The deep roots of the PA profession are firm with the earnest tireless energy of PA's over 54 years. Becoming a PA is often pursued after one observes and works with PA's who consistently address unique patient needs in these clinics, hospitals as well as in community settings. Today, Physician Assistants rank #1 in 100 Best jobs of 2021 according to the U.S. News and World Report with the demand for PA's increasing more than 300% from the prior 10 year period. According to the most recent Harris Poll, 93% reported extremely high satisfaction with PA's as trusted healthcare providers, and 91% felt that PA's have improved the quality of healthcare. Truly the impact PA's have had on patients is exemplified by the bonds patients have with these medical providers. It truly is a privilege for a Physician Assistant to provide this care.

Book excerpt: Physician assistants (PAs) are healthcare providers licensed to practice medicine under physician supervision in the United States. Despite the increasing popularity and utility of the profession, knowledge of the role of PAs remains scarce among many segments of the population. The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and perceptions of the PA profession among undergraduate students, as well as what factors are associated with better knowledge and perception of the profession. Using a cross-sectional survey, information was gathered regarding knowledge and perception of PAs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racial and ethnic disparities in health care are known to reflect access to care and other issues that arise from differing socioeconomic conditions. There is, however, increasing evidence that even after such differences are accounted for, race and ethnicity remain significant predictors of the quality of health care received. In Unequal Treatment, a panel of experts documents this evidence and explores how persons of color experience the health care environment. The book examines how disparities in treatment may arise in health care systems and looks at aspects of the clinical encounter that may contribute to such disparities. Patients' and providers' attitudes, expectations, and behavior are analyzed. How to intervene? Unequal Treatment offers recommendations for improvements in medical care financing, allocation of care, availability of language translation, community-based care, and other arenas. The committee highlights the potential of cross-cultural education to improve provider-patient communication and offers a detailed look at how to integrate cross-cultural learning within the health professions. The book concludes with recommendations for data collection and research initiatives. Unequal Treatment will be vitally important to health care policymakers, administrators, providers, educators, and students as well as advocates for people of color.
