Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

I write as a father to his adult children, but also as any world citizen, one to another. I propose that the meaning and purpose of life are to find and create Happiness - for ourselves, and for all present and future inhabitants of our planet. I call this Sustainable Global Happiness. This book begins by presenting ideas for creating personal health and happiness through a strong and resilient body and mind. A more collective wellness is also examined, focusing on the health of the Earth and the well-being of its people; so that all global citizens can live happy and healthy lives, today and tomorrow. Our actions come back to us, touching our own lives, affecting our own personal wellness. It takes a healthy planet - with rich soils, fresh air, clean water, and happy fellow citizens - to make a fully healthy and happy human.

Book excerpt: There is no perfect family. We are all works in progress. This book is a must read for anyone searching for answers to the family happiness puzzle, which in many ways is all of us. It serves as a guide to find the "sticky glue" that supports the family bond, to enhance the family's spirit and energy and to deepen connections across the family network, which is today refreshingly diverse in membership and structure. Every family has some degree of imbalance, some more than others, and every reader of this book can gain a clearer picture of how to nurture happiness, care for a family's soul and, just as importantly, engage and encourage other family members in this quest. You can't touch the soul of the family, but you are touched by it every day. Family soul is the memories and traits that make the family unique, including rituals, stories, experiences, conflicts and love. It is the family's complex network of relationships, values and activities. It is how we talk, feel and interact when we're together. You will discover how to: * Fortify the family soul with six vitamins or strengtheners--humor, emotion, acceptance, renewal, togetherness and struggle* Identify and applaud the "caretaker"--the champion of the family soul* Use the happiness tool kit--ten tangible ways to strengthen families* Recognize and apply practices that are integral to carving out happy and dynamic families: start a family of one's own, welcome in-laws and special people, bond with friends, discover a soul friend and add pets to the sceneThe exercises and tools are practical, accessible and easy to implement. The author weaves together dozens of colorful, funny and tender anecdotes that surfaced in her research, with illustrations that capture their spirit and theme. Written with empathy and good humor, the inspiring ideas and tips found here will motivate you to listen selflessly, speak from the heart, and practice whooping and praising descriptively--starting now! Susan Smith Kuczmarski, Ed.D., currently teaches at Northwestern University and Loyola University Chicago. She is an award-winning author of five books.

Book excerpt: Pathway to Happiness is a free ebook designed to give people tools that they can use to retrain their minds to accept the truth that all human souls have value and deserve love. You are enough. Today you are enough. You are enough right now as you are. If you don't currently believe that truth, then let's do something about it. I've walked the path and I can show you the way. The solutions to your particular situation are actually already inside of you and I can help awaken your ability to start finding those answers.ForewordI love my life! I am happy and I like myself. I feel like I belong and that I am loved. I feel useful and successful. I feel valued and appreciated. My life is good. It is very good. I feel so very different than I did a year ago as I sat on my couch sobbing with the desperate desire to cease existing. I wanted to disappear completely. I wanted the pain to end. I couldn't even imagine feeling loved, valued, or appreciated. I couldn't imagine feeling happy. I felt trapped and powerless to do anything about it. I felt hopeless. I hated myself. I hated my existence. It is interesting that nothing tangible has changed over the course of the past year. I'm married to the same person, have the same kids, live in the same house with the same yard. I'm the same dress size with the same amount of money in my bank account and the same amount of success. Yet I am so different. What has changed? Not my circumstances, they are the same. The only thing that changed was me. And that has made all the difference. Change takes place little by little, so that you may not even notice that things are changing at all until you remember what it was like before. Today feels pretty much like yesterday, which seemed pretty much like the day before, but when I compare where I was a year ago to where I am today it is a difference as obvious as night and day. The new day didn't come by flipping on a light switch, it progressed gradually like a sunrise, but oh, what a glorious day! Please allow me to be a companion and guide on the path to your own glorious day. I'm not pretending that I understand all your problems and that I know all the answers; that would be absurd. However, I am suggesting that it is actually you who has the answers to your particular situation and I can help you be able to access those answers. I invite you to love your life. I invite you to like yourself. I invite you to feel loved, valued and appreciated. I invite you to become happy. I invite you to resume control over your life. I know from personal experience that it is possible. I know from personal experience that it is worth the effort invested. Come on in, the water's fine. Respectfully,Linda Bjork
