Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the memory of Walter Brendel, late Professor of Experimental Surgery and Chairman of the Institute for Surgical Research at the University of Munich, Germany. For 20 years Walter Brendel organized the renowned Round Table Symposium on Applied Immunology, first in Kitzbiihel and later in Axams, Austria. On the occasion of the 20th symposium in January 1989 he gathered together a number of scientists who have been leaders in the field of transplantation immunology and clinical transplantation for the past two decades. All of them had participated at previous meetings, some on a regular basis. Many of the new discoveries in applied immunology and transplantation medicine were first presented and vividly dis cussed at the Round Table Symposia. The annual Kitzbiihel! Axams meetings became well-known and invitations much sought after, not only for this reason but also because of the uniquely intimate atmosphere that promoted the free exchange of research findings and theoretical cut and thrust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immunology is a fast evolving subject, and attempt has been made in this work to keep it as much up-to-date as possible according to the requirement of the students and researchers in the field. Immunology is the study of how the body defends itself against disease. It helps us understand how the immune system is tricked into attacking its own tissue, leading to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or allergy. Immunodeficiency disorders involve malfunction of the immune system, resulting in infections that develop and recur more frequently, are more severe, and last longer than usual. Biochemistry is the study of how cells work at molecular level. Biochemistry, and the related field of molecular biology, are important in understanding the molecular basis of life and its role in the disease process. Biochemistry is the investigation of the molecular basis of life. Throughout the history of this scientific discipline, biochemists have worked to reveal the fundamental chemical and physical principles that underlie living processes, their success is demonstrated in the enormous impact that the biochemical approach has had on the life sciences. This book reviews the principles of immunology and biochemistry, provides basic concepts of it by extracting the important information on immunology and peasants it in a concise, uncluttered fashion to prepare students for their courses.

Book excerpt: Emerging Nanotechnologies in Immunology aims to deliver a systematic and comprehensive review of data concerning the nature of interaction and nano-related risks between the nanophamaceuticals currently in the pipeline of S&T development for skin, ocular, and nasal drug delivery, including absorption, toxicity, and the ability to distribute after systemic exposure. The scientific development of manufactured nanomaterials for drug delivery is increasing rapidly. One of the most prominent applications is topical drug delivery, where cutaneous, ocular, and nasal exposure becomes even more relevant. These targets are the first barrier that nanoparticles encounter when in contact with the human body. The contributors addresses a representative set of the broad spectrum of nanopharmaceuticals currently being used, including cationic lipid nanoparticles, polymeric PLGA, PLA nanoparticles, biomacromolecules-based nanoparticles, and other scaffolds tissue engineered skin substitutes. Regulation and risk is also covered, since the safety of these nanophamaceuticals still represents a barrier to their wide innovative use. - Provides the reader with a thorough knowledge of the safety aspects of nanopharmaceuticals which are currently under research - Focuses on the characterization and quantification of the nanopharmaceuticals - Allows readers to understand the correlation between the nature of the materials and their potential nanotoxicological effects - Includes an overview of regulatory aspects related to the R&D of nanopharmaceuticals

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liver Immunology: Principles and Practice, Second Edition begins with important information about the epidemiology and mortality of liver disease worldwide. This information is followed by chapters related to basic immunology, application of liver immunology for diagnosis, and several excellent chapters that provide a solid foundation for understanding immune-mediated liver disease, including those associated with the biliary tree. A chapter on non-hepatic manifestations of immune mediated liver disease helps provide context for how these diseases affect the patient overall. In addition, chapters discuss various discrete immunologically-mediated infectious liver disorders including those related to bacteria, parasites, and all of the classic viruses. Chapters on the traditional autoimmune liver diseases -- primary biliary cirrhosis, autoimmune hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis as well as overlap syndrome – are also included. The breadth of this comprehensive second edition is highlighted by chapters on alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and drug-induced liver disease, among others. This invaluable new edition ends with a forward-looking view of future directions and how the field might meet the challenge of refractory patients. Developed by a renowned group of authors, Liver Immunology: Principles and Practice, Second Edition will again serve as a comprehensive textbook by providing an excellent overview for this rapidly evolving field. It greatly adds to the understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases, while also providing novel insights that can be harnessed into helping improve the care of patients afflicted with various immune-mediated diseases. This volume will again be a must-read for clinicians at all levels, investigators and students.

This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that the immune microenvironment is critical to the progression of genitourinary malignancies and benign diseases. A variety of cellular and molecular properties of the immune microenvironment may influence disease outcome by altering the balance of suppressive versus inflammatory or cytotoxic responses. Emerging evidence suggests that immunoediting is a key factor of phenotypic change, immunological alterations caused by physical activity or drug treatments could promote antitumor or anti-inflammatory activity. Conversely, microenvironment deficits or dysregulation can instigate or worsen pathological progression, thereby contributing to urinary disease development and progression. Thus, understanding how immune microenvironments react and maintain appropriate antitumor or anti-inflammatory responses is important for identifying actionable therapies to improve genitourinary health. Recent technological developments, particularly in the areas of genetic modification and redox indicators, provide hopeful new treatments not only in urinary cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, relatively rare adrenocortical cancer, and penile cancer but also in begin diseases like kidney stones and kidney injuries. The purpose of this topic is to provide up-to-date reviews and original articles that highlight research on immunological mediators of tumor progression and inflammatory-related genitourinary diseases, which we hope will not only integrate our current understanding but crystallize nascent questions that will help move the field forward. This research topic aims to inspire novel insights into the immunity mechanisms, novel therapeutic targets, and effective combinational strategies of urinary immunotherapies.
