Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise reference book provides an international standard for pathologists and oncologists and will serve as an indispensable guide for use in the design of studies monitoring response to therapy and clinical outcome. Diagnostic criteria, pathological features, and associated genetic alterations are described in a strictly disease-oriented manner. Sections on all WHO-recognized neoplasms and their variants include new ICD-O codes, incidence, age and sex distribution, location, clinical signs and symptoms, pathology, genetics, and predictive factors. This volume covers tumours of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, of the nasopharynx, of the hypophyranyx, larynx and trachea, of the oral cavity and oropharynx, of salivary glands, as well as odontogenetic tumours, tumours of the ear, the paraganglionic system, and inherited tumour syndromes. Each entity is extensively discussed with information on clinicopathological, epidemiological, immunophenotypic and genetic aspects of these diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the role played by modules of infinite length when dealing with problems in the representation theory of groups and algebras, but also in topology and geometry; it shows the intriguing interplay between finite and infinite length modules. The volume presents the invited lectures of a conference devoted to 'Infinite Length Modules', held at Bielefeld in September 1998, which brought together experts from quite different schools in order to survey surprising relations between algebra, topology and geometry. Some additional reports have been included in order to establish a unified picture. The collection of articles, written by well-known experts from all parts of the world, is conceived as a sort of handbook which provides an easy access to the present state of knowledge and its aim is to stimulate further development.

The book includes extensive data on reproductive indices, congenital abnormalities, growth, clinical signs, mortality, organ weights and chemical pathology. The data are derived from around 9000 control animals used in toxicology studies of two weeks to two years duration, completed between 1960 and 1992, and include 24 two-year studies and one life-span study of a 51 month duration. These extended periods of study have shown that many diseases are seen more frequently in later years.; Diseases are dealt with by body system and include clinical signs, macroscopic features and histopathology illustrations of the important or unusual diseases. Incidence levels are provided for all diseases and these are compared with published data for other rat strains.

Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was creat ed to promote cooperative efforts toward solving critical health and safety questions involving foods, drugs, cosmet ics, chemicals, and other aspects of the environment. The officers and trustees believe that questions regarding health and safety are best resolved when government and industry rely on scientific investigations, analyses, and reviews by independent experts. Further, the scientific aspects of an issue should be examined and discussed on an international basis, separate from the political concerns of individual companies. The Institute is pleased to sponsor this set of monographs on pathology of laboratory animals. This project will help to improve the scientific application of the techniques of pathology to the evaluation of substances in our environ ment. The worldwide distribution of the authors, editors, and editorial board encourages the expectation that inter national communication and cooperation will also be strengthened. Alex Malaspina President International Life Sciences Institute Preface This book on the endocrine system is Volume I of a set of reference books on pathology of laboratory animals, prepared by the Interna tional Life Sciences Institute in response to recommendations from its Committee on Pathology and Toxicology. One aim is to provide infor mation which will be useful to pathologists, especially those involved in studies on the safety of foods, drugs, chemicals, and other sub stances in the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately ten years have elapsed since the second volume of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Monographs on Pathology of Laboratory Animals, Respiratory System, was first completed. New in formation of interest to pathologists has developed at a rather remark able pace during these years. Exceptional progress has been made in the routine identification of enzymes and cell products in respiratory cells. A better understanding has developed on the functions of cells of the respiratory tract and of the mechanisms involved in cell metabolism, particularly those involving toxins and carcinogens. Clear concepts have developed concerning the significance of pathologic lesions, particularly in the upper respiratory tract and their relation to human health and risk assessment. Standardized nomenclature has developed significantly dur ing the lO-year period since the first edition and is being utilized on an international basis. This has resulted in significant improvement in com munication of pathologic data to regulatory agencies and in scientific publications worldwide. This monograph series and others sponsored by ILSI have had significant effects on these improved communications and the international acceptance of standardized nomenclature. In this sec ond edition, new formats have been used where more appropriate for the subjects to be covered.
