Book excerpt: Boorman’s Pathology of the Rat: Reference and Atlas, Second Edition, continues its history as the most comprehensive pathology reference on rat strains for researchers across science and medicine using rat models in the laboratory. It offers readers an added emphasis on the Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rat strains that is consistent with current research across academia, government, and industry. In addition, the book provides standard diagnostic criteria, basic content on histology, histological changes that result from drug toxicity and neoplasm, pathology terminology, and four-color photographs from the NTP archive and database. With updated references and photographs, as well as coverage of all rat strains, this book is not only the standard in the field, but also an invaluable resource for toxicologists, biologists, and other scientists engaged in regulatory toxicology who must make the transition from pathology results to the promulgation of meaningful regulations. Contains full, four color photographs from the NTP archive and database and coverage of all rat strains Provides an organ-by-organ and system-by-system approach that presents standard diagnostic criteria and basic content on histology and histological changes Includes comprehensive and detailed background incidence data Presents detailed descriptive content regarding changes in rat models during research

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathology of Laboratory Rodents and Rabbits has become a standard text for both veterinary pathologists and veterinarians in laboratory animal medicine. Newly recognized infectious diseases continue to emerge and molecular methods for studying infectious agents are becoming widely used for the classification of these and previously known pathogens. With the ongoing development and perfection of genetic engineering techniques, the use of genetically engineered mice in the research laboratory continues to grow exponentially. This new edition features updates throughout with increased emphasis on timely topics such as infectious diseases in genetically engineered mice. Diseases covered include viral infections, bacterial infections, parasitic diseases, nutritional and metabolic disorders, behavioral disorders, aging and degenerative disorders, environment-related disease, and neoplasms. Organized by species, coverage includes mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, and rabbits. Veterinary pathologists, laboratory animal veterinarians, and students will appreciate the concise organization and easily accessible information on key diagnostic features, differential diagnoses, and significance of diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can social science, and demography in particular, reasonably expect to learn from biological information? There is increasing pressure for multipurpose household surveys to collect biological data along with the more familiar interviewer-respondent information. Given that recent technical developments have made it more feasible to collect biological information in non-clinical settings, those who fund, design, and analyze survey data need to think through the rationale and potential consequences. This is a concern that transcends national boundaries. Cells and Surveys addresses issues such as which biologic/genetic data should be collected in order to be most useful to a range of social scientists and whether amassing biological data has unintended side effects. The book also takes a look at the various ethical and legal concerns that such data collection entails.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a long and troublesome history but an inspiring and excltmg one too-from the time of Zielonko, a Russian pathologist who in 1874 first transplanted muscles, to the present day microneurovascular muscle graft. Today we know that for functional recovery of muscle tissue vascularisation and neurotisation are of equal importance. With the establishment of microsurgery of small vessels and nerves, its application for myopias tic operations has gained increasing interest. It was my intention to bring together leading authorities from all over the world in the field of muscle transplantation. Open questions and unsolved problems had to be discussed between research workers in the basic medical sciences and our clinical colleagues; in this way progress can best be accomplished. This publication is the result of the "Vienna Muscle Symposium" (June 13-14, 1980). It gives an up-to-date viewpoint and should act as a stimulus to all who are interested in this particular field. I wish to express my sincere thanks to those who have contributed to this publication, to the two co-editors J. Holle and B. M. Carlson for their effective cooperation, and to Springer-Verlag Wien for their prompt and most efficient work.

Book excerpt: Background Lesions in Laboratory Animals will be an invaluable aid to pathologists needing to recognize background and incidental lesions while examining slides taken from laboratory animals in acute and chronic toxicity studies, or while examining exotic species in a diagnostic laboratory. It gives clear descriptions and illustrations of the majority of background lesions likely to be encountered. Many of the lesions covered are unusual and can be mistaken for treatment-related findings in preclinical toxicity studies. The Atlas has been prepared with contributions from experienced toxicological pathologists who are specialists in each of the laboratory animal species covered and who have published extensively in these areas. over 600 high-definition, top-quality color photographs of background lesions found in rats, mice, dogs, minipigs, non-human primates, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits a separate chapter on lesions in the reproductive systems of all laboratory animals written by Dr Dianne Creasy, a world expert on testicular lesions in laboratory animals a chapter on common artifacts that may be observed in histological glass slides extensive references to each lesion described aging lesions encountered in all laboratory animal species, particularly in rats in mice which are used for carcinogenicity studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat should be of interest to toxicologic pathologists, toxicologists, and other biological scientists who are interested in the histomorphology of juvenile rats. For several decades the laboratory rat has been used extensively in nonclinical toxicology studies designed to detect potential human toxicity of drugs, agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, and environmental hazards. These studies traditionally have involved young adult rats that are 8-10 weeks of age as studies are started. It is becoming increasingly apparent that children and young animals may have different responses to drug/chemical exposures, therefore, regulatory agencies are emphasizing toxicology studies in juvenile animals. While the histologic features of organs from young adult and aged laboratory rats are well known, less is known about the histologic features of organs from juvenile rats. Final histologic maturity of many organs is achieved postnatally, thus immature histologic features must be distinguished from chemical- or drug-related effects. While this postnatal organ development is known to exist as a general concept, detailed information regarding postnatal histologic development is not readily available. The Atlas includes organs that are typically sampled in nonclinical toxicology studies and presents the histologic features at weekly intervals, starting at birth and extending through postnatal day 42. Written and edited by highly experienced, board-certified toxicologic pathologists Includes more than 700 high-resolution microscopic images from organs that are typically examined in safety assessment toxicology studies Detailed figure legends and chapter narratives present the salient features of each organ at each time interval Figures are available for further study via Elsevier’s Virtual Microscope, which allows viewing of microscopic images at higher magnification Valuable resource for toxicologic pathologists who are confronted with interpretation of lesions in juvenile rats in situations where age-matched concurrent controls are not available for comparison, e.g., with unscheduled decedents Figures are available for further study on ScienceDirect with Virtual Microscope, which allows viewing of microscopic images at higher magnification
