Book Synopsis Specifications for Building Conservation by : Rory Cullen
Download or read book Specifications for Building Conservation written by Rory Cullen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Specifications for Building Conservation, the National Trust draws on a range of case studies and specifications to provide a much needed guide to specification writing for building conservation. Although traditional building accounts for approximately a quarter of all buildings in the UK, the old skills and understanding required for their care and maintenance have been increasingly eroded over the last century. As the largest heritage charity in Europe, the National Trust has a first class reputation for high standards of conservation and care, and in this three volume set, the Trust brings together a remarkable pool of expertise to guide conservation professionals and students through the process of successful specification writing. This first book focusses on the materials used for the external fabric, detailing successful approaches employed by the National Trust at some of their most culturally significant sites. A range of studies have been carefully selected for their interest, diversity and practicality; showcasing projects from stonework repairs on the magnificent Grade I listed Hardwick Hall to the re-thatching of the traditional cottages of the Holnicote Estate. Complete with a practical Conservation Management Plan checklist, this book will enable practitioners to develop their skills, allowing them to make informed decisions when working on a range of project types. This is the first practical guide to specification writing for building conservation and the advice provided by the National Trust experts will be of interest to any practitioners and students involved in building conservation, both in the UK and beyond. Profits generated from the sale of this publication will go to the National Trust Building Apprenticeship Scheme. This provides placements for traditional skills at National Trust properties.

Book excerpt: Developing and maintaining a disciplined management system provides any organization with a blueprint for exceptional performance and success. Indeed, for larger multinational corporations, a management system is a critical component for sustainable growth and performance management. In this book, the authors discuss a series of fundamentals for creating an operationally excellent management system (OEMS). The book also examines the business performance impact of an OEMS across leading gas and oil organizations, such as Exxon Mobil, BP, Suncor, and Chevron. In 7 Fundamentals of an Operationally Excellent Management System, the authors discuss each fundamental in detail and provide the supporting training and workshop materials that are essential for integrating these fundamentals into the business processes of the organization. The seven fundamentals identified by the authors provide a sequential approach for developing and executing an OEMS across any organization. Integrating sound organizational and business practices with personnel and process safety management principles, the book is an invaluable resource for organizations seeking operational discipline and excellence. Well-supported with graphics and practical examples, the book provides a simple pathway for an organization to evolve its management system into an OEMS designed to reduce workplace incidents and improve business performance on a sustainable basis. The management system principles discussed in the book are intended for the business leader who is motivated to transition his or her organization from ordinary, through best in class, to an organization of world-class stature and performance.

Book Synopsis Ancient Sunlight by : Peter Rothwell
Download or read book Ancient Sunlight written by Peter Rothwell and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-13 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his childhood and adolescence Willie Maddison has always felt himself to be a misfit. He has never known a mother's love nor felt any affection from a father who blames his son for his wife's death in child-birth. The outbreak of war in 1914 gives him the chance to escape the suffocating constraints of his home life and he enlists in the army. It is in the trenches that at last he finds comradeship and a sense of purpose and experiences events that will change his life forever. On Christmas Eve, 1914 a spontaneous truce breaks out along a number of sectors of the front. The guns fall silent and carols can be heard coming from the German trenches. After a time, men from the opposing armies begin to venture forth into No Man's Land. The opportunity is taken to bury the dead and joint services are held. On Christmas day, celebrations are shared, gifts exchanged and games played. Willie is shocked to learn that the German soldiers also believe God to be on their side and realises that were it up to the ordinary soldier the killing would never start again. Commissioned, decorated and eventually demobilised, Willie Maddison finds it difficult to adjust to civilian life and, after a disastrous love-affair, retreats to a derelict cottage on the North Devon coast to make a start on the book that has been burning in him since that fateful Christmas Day and which he hopes will help prevent the pointless sacrifice of another generation. It is not long before his unconventional behaviour and what are judged to be dangerously radical ideas are seen by the 'local establishment' as a threat to good order and when he forms an attachment to a daughter of one of the oldest families a campaign is mounted to drive him out.

Book Synopsis Country Cottage Conservation by : Bevis Claxton
Download or read book Country Cottage Conservation written by Bevis Claxton and published by Crowood. This book was released on 2014-11-30 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Country Cottage Conservation is essential reading for everyone who loves rural cottages. From simple DIY redecoration to employing architects and builders to tackle significant repairs, this book is full of helpful information. The author explains how cottage owners are able to protect and enhance their investment, and discusses various repair and redecoration options and their consequences. The charm and long life of a traditional cottage comes from over a thousand years of building tradition that was almost forgotten in the twentieth century. Modern materials and techniques are often expensively inappropriate, as they can conflict with the buildings' inbuilt defence mechanisms or make cottages look too modern, yet it is still possible to repair a cottage economically with traditional methods and natural materials that work in harmony with the original construction. The author also considers what may be done to redress the balance where inappropriate work has previously been carried out, so as to restore some of the original performance to the cottage and help preserve its charm, and value, for the future. Essential reading for everyone who loves country cotttages and invaluable for those who want to maintain and repair their property in a sympathetic and sustainable way, it is also superbly illustrated with 239 colour photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving upstream on the Irrawaddy broad tide, the ocean liner approaches the city of Rangoon, and the gold-leafed pinnacle of the celebrated Shwe Dagon pagoda welcomes it as it rises magnificently in the morning sunlight. The traveler is intrigued with the claim that this ancient shrine has been standing for three thousand years. This injects an anachronism, since Buddhism was founded not more than twenty-five centuries ago and something less than that for its lodgment in Burma. But no one seems to be embarrassed nor stultified by what, for them, is merely a slight chronological inaccuracy, which derives from the time-clocked occidental measurements, for theirs is that timeless eternity of the East.

This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles for Evaluating Building Materials in Sustainable Construction: Healthy and Sustainable Materials for the Built Environment provides a comprehensive overview of the issues associated with the selection of materials for sustainable construction, proposing a holistic and integrated approach. The book evaluates the issues involved in choosing materials from an ecosystem services perspective, from the design stage to the impact of materials on the health of building users. The three main sections of the book discuss building materials in relation to ecosystem services, the implications of materials choice at the design stage, and the impact of materials on building users and their health. The final section focuses on specific case studies that illustrate the richness of solutions that existed before the rise of contemporary construction and that are consistent with a sustainable approach to creating built environments. These are followed by modern examples which apply some, if not all, of the principles discussed in the first three sections of the book. - Provides a holistic and integrated approach to the issues associated with the selection of materials for sustainable construction - Provides a thorough understanding of ecosystem services based on ecology research for built environment design - Provides an original review of the impact of materials on human health - Provides case studies to illustrate the points above
