Book excerpt: Being different can be hard. This funny, spirited story—written by bestselling author of Get a Financial Life Beth Kobliner Shaw with her son Jacob, and illustrated by award-winning picture book artist Jules Feiffer—encourages young readers to embrace the thing that makes them unique... Jacob is in a hurry—a really big hurry—to get to the store to buy a special toy. There's only one left, and if he doesn't get to it soon, he'll never forgive his mom and dad for making him late. Strangers often stop Jacob's parents on the street to ask about him. See, Jacob is unusual: He has an eye patch. Jacob knows people like to ask questions, but do they have to ask right now? Luckily, Jacob gets to the store in time, and he meets a new friend who has something different, too. In the end, Jacob's journey makes him more aware of other people’s feelings. Jacob's Eye Patch is the go-to book for talking about differences that kids can enjoy and parents can turn to for guidance. Everyone has something different! What’s your something? Book excerpt: The impetus for writing this book started with the death of my mother and the need to retain all the stories she had told me over the years. It follows the branches of two families, including a sausage manufacturer in the industrial north of England and a haberdasher in the heart of London in the south. It also contains personal experiences of post-war Britain and beyond, and the eventual union of the families in mid-20th century Canada.

Book excerpt: To tackle the challenges of the road estimation task, many works employ a fusion of multiple sources. By that, a commonly made assumption is that the sources always are equally reliable. However, this assumption is inappropriate since each source has certain advantages and drawbacks depending on the operational scenarios. Therefore, Tuan Tran Nguyen proposes a novel concept by incorporating reliabilities into the multi-source fusion so that the road estimation task can alternately select only the most reliable sources. Thereby, the author estimates the reliability for each source online using classifiers trained with the sensor measurements, the past performance and the context. Using real data recordings, he shows via experimental results that the presented reliability-aware fusion increases the availability of automated driving up to 7 percentage points compared to the average fusion. About the Author: Tuan Tran Nguyen received the Master's degree in computer science and the Ph.D. degree from Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany, in 2013 and 2019, respectively. His research focuses on methods and architectures for reliability-based sensor fusion in intelligent vehicles.

Book excerpt: In Book Three: Spies at Rayon Junction, Gerry and his classmate, Shane, continue their journey through Cookie County, unaware that the gold keys they each carry have special powers. On their way to Balloon Field, where Trent, the hot air balloon pilot, is waiting to take them for a ride, they pass through the Rayon Junction Train Station. While they are there, they meet many peculiar citizens of Mydreama, including, Uncle David, the engineer of the Mountain Wildcat. They also find out that they are being followed by many ominous-looking blackbirds, but they have no clue that these birds are after their keys. When the boys finally reach the balloon, they are joined by the mysterious teacher that gave them the keys. With her is one their classmates, Dawnie, who joins Gerry and Shane on a very adventurous trip in the hot air balloon. While they are sailing across Cookie County, they see the Black-eyed Hills, just before a rare cotton ball storm disables their balloon, causing them to crash into the Raisin River. The adventure continues, as the gondola of the airship is transformed into a sailing vessel. Then, while they are sleeping, the currents pull them into the slower-moving Sweetwater River of the Sugar Hills, where they become stuck in a sugar slide. Gerrys sparrow friend comes to find them and takes, Mac and Tosh, two stowaway Knottys, to the Jamthumb Ranch to get help. In the meantime, the stranded castaways must figure out how to get their stuck craft out of the sugar, but are interrupted by two curious sugarbears. When their very angry mother shows up to claim her lost cubs, the kids are able to get away from her and get their boat back in the river, by eating some of Ms. Razzleberrys miraculous Jillybeans.
