William Meade: Assistant Bishop of Virginia, to the Ministers, Members, and Friends, of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Virginia, on the Duty of Affording Religious Instruction to Thoses in Bondage There was, however, a subsequent resolution and request of the Convention, which I dared not then discourage, and must not now neglect. I am thereby called upon to address a Pastoral Letter to the Churches, on one important and interesting topic, which was briefly, though earnestly, pressed in the discourse referred to: I mean the application of the blessed word of God, to a large and destitute por tion of our fellow creatures - those who are in bondage to us. Sure ly it was the good spirit of him who has told us to render that which is just and equal to our servants, remembering that we, also, have a Master in Heaven, which put it into my heart to propose this subject; and which opened the hearts of those who heard it, to de sire, that for their benefit, and the benefit of others, I should dis course further about it. It is the same spirit which is every where leading the humane and pious to consider what can be done for the real benefit of this class of our fellow beings. May it be with me while I write, and with you while you read these lines, and then con strain us all to go and do to others, as we would they should do unto us in like circumstances. Book Synopsis The Origins of Proslavery Christianity by : Charles F. Irons
Download or read book The Origins of Proslavery Christianity written by Charles F. Irons and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the colonial and antebellum South, black and white evangelicals frequently prayed, sang, and worshipped together. Even though white evangelicals claimed spiritual fellowship with those of African descent, they nonetheless emerged as the most effective defenders of race-based slavery. As Charles Irons persuasively argues, white evangelicals' ideas about slavery grew directly out of their interactions with black evangelicals. Set in Virginia, the largest slaveholding state and the hearth of the southern evangelical movement, this book draws from church records, denominational newspapers, slave narratives, and private letters and diaries to illuminate the dynamic relationship between whites and blacks within the evangelical fold. Irons reveals that when whites theorized about their moral responsibilities toward slaves, they thought first of their relationships with bondmen in their own churches. Thus, African American evangelicals inadvertently shaped the nature of the proslavery argument. When they chose which churches to join, used the procedures set up for church discipline, rejected colonization, or built quasi-independent congregations, for example, black churchgoers spurred their white coreligionists to further develop the religious defense of slavery.

Download or read book The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States written by Charles Colcock Jones and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Charles Colcock Jones's 'The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States', the author explores the importance of religious education for African Americans during the antebellum period. Jones delves into the impact of Christianity on the enslaved population, discussing how religious teachings were used to control and manipulate them. Written in a persuasive and informative style, the book sheds light on the complex relationship between religion, race, and power in American society. Jones also includes firsthand accounts and biblical references to support his arguments, making this work a valuable contribution to the study of African American history and religious practices in the United States. In addition, Jones's detailed analysis of the cultural and social factors influencing the religious education of African Americans provides readers with a deeper understanding of the complexities of race relations in early America. I highly recommend this book to those interested in the intersection of religion, race, and power dynamics in American history.
