This book was released on 1977 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing research effort is being mounted in a number of countries into investigations of ideas for drag reduction, some novel and some that were looked at in the past but were not then pursued to the point of application because the economic facts of life were different from and less pressing than they are now. These ideas include means for reducing skin friction drag (e.g. compliant walls, boundary layer control, etc.), induced drag (e.g. winglets), interference drag, transonic shock wave drag (supercritical wings) and supersonic wave drag. In addition the internal aerodynamics of ducting, especially diffusers is receiving attention to improve the performance of engines.

This book was released on 1947 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an approach of the velocity of flight of a ship to the velocity of sound, there occurs a considerable increase of the drag. The reason for this must be found in the boundary layer separation caused by formation of shock waves. It will be endeavored to reduce the drag increase by suction of the boundary layer. Experimental results showed that drag increase may be considerably reduced by this method. It was, also, observed that, by suction, the position of shock waves can be altered to a considerable extent.

Book Synopsis Analysis of the Effects of Boundary-layer Control on the Take-off Performance Characteristics of a Liaison-type Airplane by : Elmer A. Horton
Download or read book Analysis of the Effects of Boundary-layer Control on the Take-off Performance Characteristics of a Liaison-type Airplane written by Elmer A. Horton and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A performance analysis is given to determine whether bondary-layer control by suction might reduce the minimum take-off distance of a four- or five-place airplane. Results indicate that boudary-layer control might be effective in improving the take-off characteristics of this type airplane having wing loading of 10 or more pounds per square foot and aspect ratios of 10 or more.

Book Synopsis Analysis of the Effects of Boundary-layer Control on the Power-off Landing Performance Characteristics of a Liaison Type of Airplane by : Elmer A. Horton
Download or read book Analysis of the Effects of Boundary-layer Control on the Power-off Landing Performance Characteristics of a Liaison Type of Airplane written by Elmer A. Horton and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made to determine the effects of boundary-layer control on the landing performance characteristics of a liaison type of airplane having a payload of 1500 pounds and a flight duration of 5 hours. The aspect ratio was varied from 5 to 15, the wing span from 30 to 100 feet, and the brake horsepower from 300 to 1200. The use of boundary-layer control caused reduction in total landing distance (25 to 40 percent), ground-run distance, gliding speed, and stalling speed whereas sinking speed was increased only slightly.

Book excerpt: ------------------------------------------------------------ This volume contains the Proceedings of the CEAS/DragNet European Drag Reduction Conference held on 19-21 June 2000 in Potsdam, Germany. This conference, succeeding the European Fora on Laminar Flow Technology 1992 and 1996, was initiated by the European Drag Reduction Network (DragNet) and organised by DGLR under the auspice of CEAS. The conference addressed the recent advances in all areas of drag reduction research, development, validation and demonstration including laminar flow technology, adaptive wing concepts, turbulent and induced drag reduction, separation control and supersonic flow aspects. This volume which comprises more than 40 conference papers is of particular interest to engineers, scientists and students working in the aeronautics industry, research establishments or academia.
