Book Synopsis From Sight to Light by : A. Mark Smith
Download or read book From Sight to Light written by A. Mark Smith and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its inception in Greek antiquity, the science of optics was aimed primarily at explaining sight and accounting for why things look as they do. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the analytic focus of optics had shifted to light: its fundamental properties and such physical behaviors as reflection, refraction, and diffraction. This dramatic shift—which A. Mark Smith characterizes as the “Keplerian turn”—lies at the heart of this fascinating and pioneering study. Breaking from previous scholarship that sees Johannes Kepler as the culmination of a long-evolving optical tradition that traced back to Greek antiquity via the Muslim Middle Ages, Smith presents Kepler instead as marking a rupture with this tradition, arguing that his theory of retinal imaging, which was published in 1604, was instrumental in prompting the turn from sight to light. Kepler’s new theory of sight, Smith reveals, thus takes on true historical significance: by treating the eye as a mere light-focusing device rather than an image-producing instrument—as traditionally understood—Kepler’s account of retinal imaging helped spur the shift in analytic focus that eventually led to modern optics. A sweeping survey, From Sight to Light is poised to become the standard reference for historians of optics as well as those interested more broadly in the history of science, the history of art, and cultural and intellectual history.

Book Synopsis A Passage into Life by : Laura J. Gray Mitchell
Download or read book A Passage into Life written by Laura J. Gray Mitchell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of poetry does not read like a novel because of its rhyme, brevity and omission of detail. However, it is meant to teach, inspire, and awaken, opening eyes, ears and hearts to help examine ourselves, see who we as a people are, where we are headed and where we are taking our children, families, communities and nation, and what we can to do to help bring aboutor restorewholeness in our lives and the lives of others. The first poem in the collection, The Child Whod Come is inspired by a real and overlooked little girl caught in an unwholesome situation not of her making. Another poem, Grand Guardian, was inspired by real people. It is, though, written to a wider population who may be in the same circumstances as the individual whose silent, passionate voice we hear as we read, and the human subjects that the individual addresses. Other poems in the collection are reflections on Almighty God and the love he has for his people and creation. Still others have personal thoughts that I want to sharewith you as well as those who are special to my heart. A PASSAGE INTO LIFE is for people who are hurting; also for hopeful people, joyful people, people of faith, and people who have little faith or no faith. It is for saint and sinner alike. It is to help anyone who has been hurt mentally, physically or spiritually. It is also for anyone who harms others in a big way or small way, any way at all. I believe that everyone who finds himself or herself in trouble in this life can find a way out. You will need the help of others who love the Lord God, who genuinely care about what happens to you. They may not always seem to do things the right wayyour way. They may seem like they are hypocrites or insincere at times, or seem harsh, giving you some tough love. But they can be your stepping stone, to lift you up out of deep despair, disgrace, shame, unhappiness and hopelessness if you are willing to listen to the voice of the Lord in His grace and wisdom, and believe the Lord will help you. The voice and word of God tells us of the good and the evil things that happen in this life. When we find ourselves facing problems, troubles or the worst of evils, God can lead us to what is good and perfect through Jesus Christ. When some people have done things to harm and hurt you, call the Lord!!! God can pick you up and lead you into healing, goodness, and wholeness so that you will be able to keep on going in this life no matter what may happen or what may have happened to you in the past. It is important that you believe God is real, and that this real, living God who created us all and all things in the world and beyond, is not just somewhere out there, but always near to you and the situation you may find yourself in, whether youve been listening to him or not. Learn what God can do to and for all kinds of people and what He has done through Jesus Christ with people who lost belief and faith in God, or who have stopped paying attention to Him. If you never knew Godor about Godor you lost your belief and faith in Him, you must learn or re-learn about this Creator and keeper of us all. The Holy Scripturesthe Bible, the word of Godis the key. It is important to know that someone faithful to the Lord God can help you understand. Pray, and ask God about this. I believe in God through Jesus Christ. You may guess that I am a member of the Christian faitha sinnerwho sometimes thinks she is doing the right thing, the best thing, only to find she has made mistakes in judgment or in what she has done, without knowing better or thinking that it was right or the better thing to do at the ti

Book Synopsis Passage to the Center by : Daniel Tobin
Download or read book Passage to the Center written by Daniel Tobin and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney, author of nine collections of poetry and three volumes of influential essays, is regarded by many as the greatest Irish poet since Yeats. Passage to the Center is the most comprehensive critical treatment to date on Heaney's poetry and the first to study Heaney's body of work up to Seeing Things and The Spirit Level. It is also the first to examine the poems from the perspective of religion, one of Heaney's guiding preoccupations. According to Tobin, the growth of Heaney's poetry may be charted through the recurrent figure of "the center," a key image in the relationship that evolved over time between the poet and his inherited place, an evolution that involved the continual re-evaluation and re-vision of imaginative boundaries. In a way that previous studies have not, Tobin's work examines Heaney's poetry in the context of modernist and postmodernist concerns about the desacralizing of civilization and provides a challenging engagement with the work of a living master.

Book Synopsis Passage Meditation by : Eknath Easwaran
Download or read book Passage Meditation written by Eknath Easwaran and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pioneered by spiritual master Eknath Easwaran, passage meditation consists of memorizing an inspirational spiritual passage and then sending it deep into consciousness through slow, sustained attention. It keeps meditation fresh and varied because readers can select the passages - from one tradition or many - that embody their chosen ideals. Many readers also enjoy the passages for their poetic and intellectual appeal. This form of meditation offers all the richness and depth of traditional wisdom, together with a practical method for bringing that wisdom into daily life. The book situates passage meditation as part of Easwaran's eight-point program that, based on traditional spiritual practices but adjusted for modern lifestyles, shows readers how to stay calm and focused at work and home. This edition includes a new preface of previously unpublished material by Easwaran and an epilogue that explains the story behind the book and invites new readers to join the author on this adventure in the ''world within.''
Book Synopsis Names for Light by : Thirii Myo Kyaw Myint
Download or read book Names for Light written by Thirii Myo Kyaw Myint and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize, a lyrical meditation on family, place, and inheritance Names for Light traverses time and memory to weigh three generations of a family’s history against a painful inheritance of postcolonial violence and racism. In spare, lyric paragraphs framed by white space, Thirii Myo Kyaw Myint explores home, belonging, and identity by revisiting the cities in which her parents and grandparents lived. As she makes inquiries into their stories, she intertwines oral narratives with the official and mythic histories of Myanmar. But while her family’s stories move into the present, her own story—that of a writer seeking to understand who she is—moves into the past, until both converge at the end of the book. Born in Myanmar and raised in Bangkok and San Jose, Myint finds that she does not have typical memories of arriving in the United States; instead, she is haunted by what she cannot remember. By the silences lingering around what is spoken. By a chain of deaths in her family line, especially that of her older brother as a child. For Myint, absence is felt as strongly as presence. And, as she comes to understand, naming those absences, finding words for the unsaid, means discovering how those who have come before have shaped her life. Names for Light is a moving chronicle of the passage of time, of the long shadow of colonialism, and of a writer coming into her own as she reckons with her family’s legacy.

Book excerpt: In this hard-hitting novel, first published in 1924, the murky personal relationship between an Englishwoman and an Indian doctor mirrors the troubled politics of colonialism. Adela Quested and her fellow British travelers, eager to experience the "real" India, develop a friendship with the urbane Dr. Aziz. While on a group outing, Adela and Dr. Aziz visit the Marabar caves together. As they emerge, Adela accuses the doctor of assaulting her. While Adela never actually claims she was raped, the decisions she makes ostracize her from both her countrymen and the natives, setting off a complex chain of events that forever changes the lives of all involved. This intense and moving story asks the listener serious questions about preconceptions regarding race, sex, religion, and truth. A political and philosophical masterpiece
