Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a systematic pedagogical exposition of the quantitative analysis of Wilson lines and gauge-invariant correlation functions in quantum chromodynamics. Using techniques from the previous volume (Wilson Lines in Quantum Field Theory, 2014), an ab initio methodology is developed and practical tools for its implementation are presented. Emphasis is put on the implications of gauge invariance and path-dependence properties of transverse-momentum dependent parton density functions. The latter are associated with the QCD factorization approach to semi-inclusive hadronic processes, studied at currently operating and planned experimental facilities. Contents: Introduction Particle Number Operators in Quantum Mechanics and in Quantum Field Theory Geometry of Quantum Field Theories Basics of Wilson Lines in QCD Gauge-Invariant Parton Densities Simplifying Wilson Line Calculations Brief Literature Guide Conventions and Reference Formulae Integrations Bibliography Index

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a gap in the current literature, this book is the first entirely dedicated to high energy quantum chromodynamics (QCD) including parton saturation and the color glass condensate (CGC). It presents groundbreaking progress on the subject and describes many problems at the forefront of research, bringing postgraduate students, theorists and interested experimentalists up to date with the current state of research in this field. The material is presented in a pedagogical way, with numerous examples and exercises. Discussion ranges from the quasi-classical McLerran–Venugopalan model to the linear BFKL and nonlinear BK/JIMWLK small-x evolution equations. The authors adopt both a theoretical and an experimental outlook, and present the physics of strong interactions in a universal way, making it useful for physicists from various subcommunities of high energy and nuclear physics, and applicable to processes studied at all high energy accelerators around the world. At such high energies parton densities in both protons are extremely high. This leads to the enhanced probability for multi-parton interactions. These are events in which more than one partonic interaction occurs per one nucleon collision. The multi-parton interactions, which are characterized by a hard scale, can be described in QCD by means of double parton distributions. In this thesis we propose a construction of the double unintegrated parton distribution functions which, in addition to the longitudinal momentum fractions, include the dependence on the transverse momenta of partons. To this aim, we extend the formalism that was used previously for the single unintegrated parton distribution functions. Starting from the homogeneous part of the equation for the integrated double parton distribution function, we construct the double unintegrated parton distribution functions which are the convolutions of the integrated parton densities and the Sudakov form factor. We present first numerical studies of these distributions. In particular, double unintegrated parton density functions are studied as a function of the transverse momenta for fixed scales and fixed values of the longitudinal momentum fractions. We also discuss the numerical methods used for the calculation of these double unintegrated parton distribution functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the Pomeron, an object of crucial importance in very high energy particle physics. The book starts with a general description of the Pomeron within the framework of Regge theory. The emergence of the Pomeron within scalar field theory is discussed next, providing a natural foundation on which to develop the more realistic case of QCD. The reggeization of the gluon is demonstrated and used to build the Pomeron of perturbative QCD. The dynamical nature of the Pomeron is then investigated. The role of the Pomeron in small-x deep inelastic scattering and in diffractive scattering is also examined in detail. The volume concludes with a study of the colour dipole approach to high energy scattering and the explicit role of unitarity corrections. This book will be of interest to theoretical and experimental particle physicists, and applied mathematicians.

Book excerpt: Many facets of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) are relevant to the in-depth discussion of theoretical and experimental aspects of high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. Exciting phenomena are being discovered in such ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, notably the increasingly important role of deconfined quark-gluon matter created in the early stage. The book contains lectures on the physics of hot dense matter, the expected phase transitions and colour superconductivity, recent developments in the treatment of nonlinear effects at large parton densities, fundamental issues in the phenomenology of ultrarelativistic heavy collisions. The latest data on heavy ion collisions are also presented. A unique collection of lectures on the many facets of QCD relevant to the physics of hot dense matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at graduate students and researchers in theoretical physics, this book presents the modern theory of strong interaction: quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The book exposes various perturbative and nonperturbative approaches to the theory, including chiral effective theory, the problems of anomalies, vacuum tunnel transitions, and the problem of divergence of the perturbative series. The QCD sum rules approach is exposed in detail. A great variety of hadronic properties (masses of mesons and baryons, magnetic moments, form factors, quark distributions in hadrons, etc.) have been found using this method. The evolution of hadronic structure functions is presented in detail, together with polarization phenomena. The problem of jets in QCD is treated through theoretical description and experimental observation. The connection with Regge theory is emphasized. The book covers many aspects of theory which are not discussed in other books, such as CET, QCD sum rules, and BFKL. • Provides a deep understanding of various aspects of the modern theory of strong interaction • Presents the general properties of QCD, before exploring perturbative and nonperturbative approaches • Discusses aspects of the theory such as CET, QCD sum rules, and BFKL, which are not covered in other books

A leading authority who has contributed significantly to the development of PQCD for more than 20 years, the author has selected articles on the basis of their present interest. These articles cover different aspects of the subject without unnecessary duplication and are accompanied by commentaries. Also, original material, specially written for this book, has been added to integrate and update the results and their presentation. Hence, more than providing a historical perspective on the subject, this volume also serves well as an authoritative guidebook on Perturbative QCD.
