Book excerpt: Competition has become an important theme in the operations management literature and, according to recent theoretical and empirical work, the key finding is that firms tend to overstock or overproduce under competition. Following this prediction, one would expect that, after airlines start a multifaceted collaboration by forming an alliance, their networks would be consolidated and capacity redundancies would be eliminated, as intensity of competition decreases among alliance partners. Surprisingly, we find exactly the opposite: in the post-alliance era, alliance partners seek to overlap their networks more and they increase capacities on the markets in which two partners are already present. At the same time, average prices in those markets increase by about $11 per one-way segment coupon. We explain these results using predictions based on the theory of multimarket competition: as firms seek out opportunities to establish multimarket contact to strengthen mutual forbearance, they have incentives to increase overlap even though this decision may not seem optimal or efficient locally or in the short term. We examine other plausible competing mechanisms built on theories of capacity and service competition and commonly cited benefits of airline alliances but ultimately we conclude that our findings are most likely driven by the multimarket competition. This paper therefore underscores the importance of going beyond simple bilateral competition models whose predictions may not hold when firms compete operationally in multiple markets, a phenomenon which is widespread in many operations-intensive industries.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we investigate empirically the effect of two recent domestic airline alliances. We find that both alliances benefited consumers - average fares fell and total traffic increased after the creation of the alliances on those city pairs affected by the alliances. We also find that these effects are found both on city pairs where the alliance created one or two new online carriers, and on city pairs where the alliance increased the service offered by one or both alliance partners. Finally, we find that the size of the fare effect of the alliance depends on the pre-alliance level of competition on a city pair with the effect being larger on those city pairs where the level of competition was relatively low

Book excerpt: Strategic airline alliances are an important topic in airline management today, stimulated by poor access of international airlines to large domestic markets such as the USA and EU and the increasing importance of network scope. Outright mergers of international airlines have proved to be difficult for political, cultural and legal reasons, making alliances the best available form to strengthen strategic positions and streamline networks. However, there are a number of difficulties associated with an alliance such as long-term stability, political climate, cultural conflict and how much capital alliance partners should sink into the integration. The main purpose of the book is to convey in an accessible form to a wide audience, the results of recent academic research on strategic airline alliances. The authors systematically cover: policy, regulation and consumer issues; management, marketing and strategic issues; the mechanics of airline alliances; the airline alliance group as an organisation in its own right; different forms of alliances and clusters; success and failure factors of airline alliances. The book successfully: - provides an analytical framework for understanding the dynamics of airline alliance groups - examines both the level of the individual airline and the alliance group itself - applies recent insights from organisation theory. The readership includes airline managers, policy-makers, academic researchers and others interested in evolving multilateral alliances. It can also be used as a course book both in aviation management training and in more general modules on alliances for advanced students in air transport management.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,9, European Business School - International University Schloß Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel (Chair of Strategic Aviation Management), course: Bacheloarbeit, language: English, abstract: “Companies are just beginning to learn what nations have always known: in a complex, uncertain world filled with dangerous opponents, it is best not to go it alone” (Ohmae, 1989, p. 143). This statement emphasises the significant developments in firms’ corporate strategy in the 1980s. As a response to the rise of globalisation, and thus, increased competition, companies throughout the world started collaborating with partners with interfirm cooperation. Their cooperative practices, though, were not equally relevant in all branches, but concentrated mainly on industries that were affected most by the in-creasing environmental dynamic and complexity. Therefore, firms in various industries, such as the automotive or telecommunication industry, established alliances with their competitors in order to stay competitive and to jointly expand into world markets. However, the aviation industry, in particular, has experienced downright alliance frenzy since that time. With the gradual liberalisation of international air transport, collabora-tions between carriers have steadily gained importance. Therefore, airline alliances have developed from purely horizontal links into more complex and integrated strategic alliances. These strategic alliances have been established mainly to bypass existing regula-tory restrictions and to adapt to customers' altered preferences by extending the airlines’ networks. However, with the incidents that occurred during the first years of the 21st century, such as the terrorist acts of 9/11, partner airlines were forced to react to the changed external conditions. This development highlights the high dependence of air-lines and their strategic behaviour on the external environment. Therefore, this thesis aims to analyse the external conditions that persuaded the airlines to align in complex strategic alliances, and how these factors influenced their objectives. Furthermore, the thesis reveals the extent to which the changes in the external environ-ment have induced a reorientation in the airlines’ alliance strategy.

Book excerpt: Since the late 1990s, network airlines worldwide have being enrolling in one of the three current Global Airline Alliances (GALs), oneworld, Star Alliance and SkyTeam. By 2011, airlines belonging to the three GALs transported over two-thirds of all international traffic. This thesis studies the reasons that cause an increasing number of airlines to join this collaborative scheme as a way to develop a wider network and to increase profitability by serving international connecting traffic. The evolution of GALs is characterized here by the analysis of the size of these alliances, as well as by the volume of partnerships and code share agreements between alliance partners during the period 2006-2011. The results of this study illustrate the differences between each of the GALs and the degree of dependence of airlines on alliances to develop their international networks. By most indicators, the largest alliance, Star Alliance, is the GAL in which member airlines rely more on their alliance partners when developing code share agreements with foreign airlines. In all three GALs, code share agreements between alliance partners are much less likely to be broken than with nonpartner airlines. Airlines operating in the transatlantic markets appear to be the most advanced firms in the marketing of code shared itineraries. The empirical analysis is complemented with a review of the theoretical benefits of GALs to airlines, alternative network models for international growth, the impact of alliances on customers' welfare, their potential anti-competitive effects on independent carriers, and the current regulatory framework affecting alliances on both sides of the North Atlantic. Overall, this work provides a holistic view of the GALs as a model for network development, to describe their policy implications, and to suggest key drivers in the future of airlines' network development strategies.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Market research, grade: 90.0, Cologne Business School Köln, course: Competitive Intelligence, language: English, abstract: Competitive intelligence is the process of monitoring an industry to identify current and future competitors, their activities, how their actions will affect a firm and how the firm should respond to these actions (Business Dictionary, 2017). The scope of this competitor analysis will be on examining a primary competitor for American Airlines, from which the results can help make strategic decisions in the future. Being aware of competition can help a company maintain their competitive advantage or their position in the market. The chosen competitor for American Airlines is Southwest Airlines. Within this paper, the background of both companies will be discussed, with a deep-dive into Southwest strategy as well as other key information. Two competitive intelligence techniques will be applied: Porters Five Forces and Scenario Analysis. Lastly, some predications about the future of the company will be made.

Book excerpt: Airline Choices for the Future: From Alliances to Mergers offers an up-to-date assessment of the industry as it stands today, delivering a comprehensive insight into how the world of airline alliances is changing, and how the merger phenomenon is likely to fit into the new scenario. The purpose of this book is twofold. Firstly, it outlines the evolution and the reasons behind alliances between international air carriers, the alliances' track records and the way they have affected airlines and the air transport industry. Secondly, drawing on past and more recent developments in the industry, it examines the experiences airlines involved in cross-border mergers have gone through and the advantages and difficulties they have come across. Alliances and mergers are presented from both the airline and the consumer perspective. The book provides a balanced account of where mergers and alliances have taken the industry to date, bridging the gap between merger theory and implemented practices and strategies. It also identifies the challenges alliances and cross-border mergers have faced and highlights the key forces affecting airline development. Theoretical evidence is supplemented by data collected via surveys and interviews with airline executives, aviation experts, consultants and regulatory bodies.

Book excerpt: GAO provided information on marketing alliances between U.S. and foreign airlines, focusing on: (1) their effect on consumers and airlines' traffic flows and revenues; and (2) key issues that the Department of Transportation (DOT) needs to address. GAO found that: (1) alliances between U.S and foreign airlines have increased ridership and revenues for partners; (2) the impact of an alliance on other U.S. airlines depends on the alliance's geographic scope, other airlines' competitive response, and the extent to which competition between that alliance and the other airlines stimulates new traffic; (3) consumers benefit from the conveniences that alliances provide, although it is unclear how alliances will affect fares; (4) DOT has not required airlines to report sufficient data to monitor the alliances' effects on competition; (5) DOT has not determined whether antitrust immunity should be available for alliances in markets that allow for increased access for U.S. airlines; and (6) DOT has not limited code sharing, or multiple listings of the same flight, which gives airlines in an alliance a competitive advantage.

Book excerpt: "This paper began with a brief history of the development of the airplane and the airline industry in the United States and Europe. Use of aircraft for mail delivery and passenger travel was discussed as well as political environments and stages of development which led to the emergence of airlines themselves. As airlines developed and international travel became common, international political considerations of this activity were examined. This activity impacted the development of use of strategic alliances in the airline industry. Market-based economics were discussed, and the permitted level of cooperative effort among the airlines was examined from a historical and current point of view. To determine the impact of strategic alliances in the air transport industry, a detailed examination of the structure and operational aspects of two member airlines in a newly formed alliance was conducted using historical and current information from industry sources in English and French. Each member airline, Delta Air Lines, and Air France, was examined with comparative reasoning in order to evaluate their operations in a standardized fashion. The analysis chapter, an evaluation of the effectiveness of the strategic alliances the member airlines had formed, was conducted using objective, industry-wide criteria. This analysis led to a conclusion that strategic alliances in the air transport industry are beneficial and essential to provide an Anywhere to Everywhere service to customers."--Abstract
