Book excerpt: Precipitation of carbonate minerals is ubiquitous in the near-surface environment, and the isotopic and trace element composition of carbonates may be used to reconstruct the conditions of growth. Little is known about the mechanisms controlling isotope and trace element distribution into carbonates. Proposed growth mechanisms are typically inferred from the supersaturation dependence of CaCO3 precipitation rates. As different experimental techniques often generate different apparent reaction orders, numerous hypothesized mechanisms can be found in the literature. These descriptions of crystallization pathway cannot be used to identify processes controlling trace element and isotope partitioning. Recent advances in experimental methodology allow us to observe microscopic to nano-scopic structures at the mineral surface during growth. The mechanisms controlling calcite growth have been directly determined by using fluid flow cells placed in an atomic force microscope (AFM; chapter 3). Calcite growth below the threshold oversaturation for amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) formation - typical of seawater and most terrestrial fluids - occurs primarily through the attachment of ions to kink sites on the surface. The net flux of ions to kink sites governs both overall growth rate and mineral composition. In this thesis, I present a self-consistent model based on observed calcite growth mechanisms that may be used to predict growth rate (chapter 1), and isotopic (chapter 2; Nielsen et al., 2012) and trace element (chapter 5; Nielsen et al., in prep.) partitioning as a function of solution composition. I apply this model to calcium isotope fractionation during the precipitation of synthetic calcite, which I grew and analyzed using novel secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) methods (chapter 3). In chapter chapter 4 (Nielsen and DePaolo, in review), I model calcium isotope fractionation in carbonate minerals that I collected from the highly alkaline Mono Lake, CA. The mechanistic framework developed here may be extended to multicomponent systems, and may be adapted for use in reactive transport models. When interpreted through the lens of this model, trace element and isotope signatures preserved in carbonates may eventually be used to reconstruct the chemistry of natural aqueous fluids.

Book excerpt: The distributions and bioavailability of trace metals and their isotopes are strongly controlled by partitioning between the dissolved phase and suspended and sinking biotic and abiotic particles. This work presents new particulate trace element data from CLIVAR section A16N in the North Atlantic collected during two occupations in 2003 and 2013. ED-XRF methods were adapted for trace element analysis of marine suspended particulate matter at sub-nanomolar concentrations. Paired analyses of particulate Al, P, Ca, V, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb concentrations using samples collected from the upper water column in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans show that ED-XRF and HR ICP-MS methods produce comparable data for many trace elements of oceanographic interest. By quantifying changes in the concentrations of subsurface particulate Al and Fe and mixed-layer dissolved Al in the equatorial North Atlantic, we estimate dust deposition to surface waters in the eastern North Atlantic increased by approximately 15% between 2003 and 2013. Increased concentrations of dissolved Al in subtropical mode waters suggest that dust deposition may have also increased in the western basin. Particulate calcium distributions and total alkalinity measurements along A16N in 2003 and 2013 were used to estimate shallow-water carbonate dissolution. In the tropical North Atlantic, water masses at intermediate depths were undersaturated with respect to aragonite. Carbonate dissolution rates were estimated to be 0.7-0.9 mmol m-2 d-1, indicating this region is a hotspot for shallow carbonate dissolution in the Atlantic basin. Finally, the enriched [delta]65Cu of particulate matter samples suggests that adsorptive and passive scavenging processes likely dominate the fractionation of Cu stable isotopes in the upper ocean and result in isotopically heavy particulate Cu. Incorporating this new data into an isotopic mass balance for Cu in the surface ocean, we estimate an atmospheric flux of 1.2 x 108 mol Cu yr-1 to the surface ocean and a particle export flux from the base of the mixed layer of 2.6 x 109 mol Cu yr-1.

This book aims to be a primer for scientists who seek to apply boron proxies in marine carbonates to estimate past seawater carbonate chemistry and atmospheric pCO2. Boron proxies (δ11B and B/Ca) were introduced nearly three decades ago, with subsequent strides being made in understanding their mechanistic functioning. This text reviews current knowledge about the aqueous systematics, the inorganic and biological controls on boron isotope fractionation and incorporation into marine carbonates, as well as the analytical techniques for measurement of boron proxies. Laboratory and field calibrations of the boron proxies are summarized, and similarities between modern calibrations are explored to suggest estimates for proxy sensitivities in marine calcifiers that are now extinct. Example applications illustrate the potential for reconstructing paleo-atmospheric pCO2 from boron isotopes. Also explored are the sensitivity of paleo-ocean acidity and pCO2 reconstructions to boron isotope proxy systematics that are currently less well understood, including the elemental and boron isotopic composition of seawater through time, seawater alkalinity, temperature and salinity, and their collective impact on the uncertainty of paleo-reconstructions. The B/Ca proxy is based on the same mechanistic principles as the boron isotope proxy, but empirical calibrations suggest seawater pH is not the only controlling factor. B/Ca therefore has the potential to provide a second carbonate parameter that could be paired with δ11B to fully constrain the ocean carbonate system, but the associated uncertainties are large. This text reviews and examines what is currently known about the B/Ca proxy systematics. As more scientists embark on characterizing past ocean acidity and atmospheric pCO2, Boron in Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology provides a resource to introduce geoscientists to the opportunities and complications of boron proxies, including potential avenues to further refine them.

Given that silicate weathering is the primary long-term method by which CO2 is removed from the atmosphere, Li isotope research is going through an exciting phase. We show the weathering processes that fractionate dissolved and sedimentary Li isotope ratios, focusing on weathering intensity and clay formation. We then discuss the carbonate and silicate archive potential of past seawater δ7Li. These archives have been used to examine Li isotope changes across both short and long timescales. The former can demonstrate the rates at which the climate is stabilised from perturbations via weathering, a fundamental piece of the puzzle of the long-term carbon cycle.
