Book excerpt: Plant based biotechnology has come to represent a means of mitigating the problems of global food security in the twenty-first century. Products and processes in agriculture are increasingly becoming linked to science and cutting edge technology, to enable the engineering of what are in effect, designer plants. One of the most successful , non-chemical approaches to pest management and disease control is biological control, which seeks a solution in terms of using living organisms to regulate the incidence of pests and pathogens, providing a natural control' while still maintaining the biological balance with the ecosystem. This volume, (the first of two), addresses the different types of biocontrol for different pests, namely, crop diseases, weeds and nematodes, and details the biology of both the pest and its enemies, which is vital for efficient use of biological control. The book has numerous contributors who are authorities in their fields, and would be an asset to those who have interest in sustainable agriculture and crop productivity.

Book excerpt: Prevent agricultural loss with natural disease controls that don’t harm the environment—or the people who live in it Despite the worldwide use of chemicals and pesticides to control the devastating effects of plant disease, the international agribusiness market still suffers extensive economic losses each year. Biological Control of Plant Diseases offers natural alternatives to the synthetic fungicides, pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides that have not only failed to stop pests and pathogens, but have raised serious safety and environmental concerns. The world’s leading plant pathologists examine the use of antagonistic microorganisms, inherent resistance, and natural fungicides for plant protection that’s safe, economical, and effective. Biological Control of Plant Diseases presents up-to-date research findings on disease management to provide you with a single-source reference text for developing a sustainable ecosystem that doesn’t depend on harmful and unhealthy agrochemicals. This unique book acts as a catalyst for change, presenting fresh ideas and innovative strategies for finding meaningful solutions to the problems of disease control. Contributors working in the areas of plant protection, microbiology, plant pathology, biotechnology, ecology, and food safety examine topics that include the application of plant tissue culture, competitive root colonization, mycorrhiza in biocontrol, microbial siderophores, antagonism, and genetic regulation. Topics addressed in Biological Control of Plant Diseases include: soil-borne pathogens rhizobacteria organic acids white rot Trichoderma and Agrobacterium phyllosphere manure-based microbes gray mold disease major fungal diseases mycoparasitism microbial chitinases and much more Biological Control of Plant Diseases is an invaluable reference resource for extension scientists and academics working in botany, biology, entomology, ecology, agriculture, horticulture, plant pathology, and the environmental sciences.

Wheat Rusts: An Atlas of Resistance Genes has been prepared by specialists from one of the leading international laboratories, and illustrates with colour photographs typical resistance phenotypes associated with most known genes for resistance to the three rust diseases of wheat. Relevant details for each gene include chromosome location, aspects of genetics and pathogen variation, the effects of environment on expression, origin, availability in genetic and breeding stocks, and use in agriculture. This atlas includes an introduction to host:pathogen genetics, methodologies for wheat rust research and breeding for resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cereal Rusts, Volume II: Diseases, Distribution, Epidemiology, and Control is a compendium of papers that aims to control cereal rusts through principles about the nature of the disease, as well as learned strategies toward its control. These papers deal with the major cereal rust diseases such as wheat and rye stem rust, wheat leaf rust, stripe rust, oat stem rust, barley leaf rust. Control of these types of rust diseases include cultural methods, barberry eradication, crop resistance, fungicides, and ecological controls. One paper notes that cultivars, a plant variety developed through selective breeding, should be used. The key to its development with long-lasting resistance is diversity, namely, genetic diversity in resistance types, and diversity in its strategic development, including a combination of race-specific with non-race specific resistance. For example, Parlevliet has pointed out that in natural ecosystems, race-specific resistance can protect the host plant by rendering the pathogen population less aggressive. One paper also examines the use of chemicals for rust disease control in the United States. This compendium is ideally suited for the cytologists, physiologists, biochemists, geneticists, epidemiologists, taxonomists, and cereal plant pathologists.

Book excerpt: Disease resistance is one of the major factors that can be improved to sustain yield potential in cultivated crops. This book looks at disease resistance in wheat, concentrating on all the economically important diseases -- their economic impact and geographical spread, breeding for resistance, pathogen variability, resistance mechanisms and recent advances made on resistance genes. Newer strategies for identifying resistance genes and identify resistance mechanisms are discussed, including cloning, gene transfer and the use of genetically modified plants.

This book was released on 2010-03-23 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of a recent spread of a new and highly virulent race of Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici called Ug99, stem rust is becoming a serious threat to wheat production in Ethiopia and other east African countries. Therefore, there is an urgent need to analyse the virulence spectrum of Pgt populations in Ethiopia. Wheat stem rust samples were collected in 2006 and 2007 in Arsi, Bale, Shewa and the Northwest regions of Ethiopia to determine the virulence diversity and race distribution in P. graminis f. sp. tritici populations. Stem rust incidence was high in Arsi, Bale and East Shewa. In Northwest Ethiopia, and North and West Shewa, stem rust was prevalent at low levels. A total of 152 isolates was analyzed and 22 races were identified. Races TTKSR (Ug99), TTHSR and RRTTR were predominant with frequencies of 26.6, 17.7 and 11.1%, respectively. These races were also detected in all regions. It turned out that the highly virulent race designated as Ug99 was present throughout the country and dominated in all regions except Northwest Ethiopia. A variant of Ug99, which is virulent against Sr24 was not detected in this study. Four stem rust resistance genes (Sr13, Sr30, Sr36 and SrTmp) were found to confer resistance to most of the races prevalent in Ethiopia. With the exception of Sr30, which is not effective to Ug99, the other three genes can be used in breeding for resistance to stem rust in Ethiopia.
