This book was released on 2011 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the basic techniques of separation of variables and Fourier series, the book presents the solution of boundary-value problems for basic partial differential equations: the heat equation, wave equation, and Laplace equation, considered in various standard coordinate systems--rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical. Each of the equations is derived in the three-dimensional context; the solutions are organized according to the geometry of the coordinate system, which makes the mathematics especially transparent. Bessel and Legendre functions are studied and used whenever appropriate throughout the text. The notions of steady-state solution of closely related stationary solutions are developed for the heat equation; applications to the study of heat flow in the earth are presented. The problem of the vibrating string is studied in detail both in the Fourier transform setting and from the viewpoint of the explicit representation (d'Alembert formula). Additional chapters include the numerical analysis of solutions and the method of Green's functions for solutions of partial differential equations. The exposition also includes asymptotic methods (Laplace transform and stationary phase). With more than 200 working examples and 700 exercises (more than 450 with answers), the book is suitable for an undergraduate course in partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: Applied Differential Equations with Boundary Value Problems presents a contemporary treatment of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and an introduction to partial differential equations (PDEs), including their applications in engineering and the sciences. This new edition of the author’s popular textbook adds coverage of boundary value problems. The text covers traditional material, along with novel approaches to mathematical modeling that harness the capabilities of numerical algorithms and popular computer software packages. It contains practical techniques for solving the equations as well as corresponding codes for numerical solvers. Many examples and exercises help students master effective solution techniques, including reliable numerical approximations. This book describes differential equations in the context of applications and presents the main techniques needed for modeling and systems analysis. It teaches students how to formulate a mathematical model, solve differential equations analytically and numerically, analyze them qualitatively, and interpret the results.

Asmar's relaxed style and emphasis on applications make the material understandable even for students with limited exposure to topics beyond calculus. This computer-friendly text encourages the use of computer resources for illustrating results and applications, but it is also suitable for use without computer access. Additional specialized topics are included that are covered independently of each other and can be covered by instructors as desired.

Book excerpt: Boundary Value Problems is a text material on partial differential equations that teaches solutions of boundary value problems. The book also aims to build up intuition about how the solution of a problem should behave. The text consists of seven chapters. Chapter 1 covers the important topics of Fourier Series and Integrals. The second chapter deals with the heat equation, introducing separation of variables. Material on boundary conditions and Sturm-Liouville systems is included here. Chapter 3 presents the wave equation; estimation of eigenvalues by the Rayleigh quotient is mentioned briefly. The potential equation is the topic of Chapter 4, which closes with a section on classification of partial differential equations. Chapter 5 briefly covers multidimensional problems and special functions. The last two chapters, Laplace Transforms and Numerical Methods, are discussed in detail. The book is intended for third and fourth year physics and engineering students.

Partial Differential Equations: Theory and Completely Solved Problems offers a modern introduction into the theory and applications of linear partial differential equations (PDEs). It is the material for a typical third year university course in PDEs. The material of this textbook has been extensively class tested over a period of 20 years in about 60 separate classes. The book is divided into two parts. Part I contains the Theory part and covers topics such as a classification of second order PDEs, physical and biological derivations of the heat, wave and Laplace equations, separation of variables, Fourier series, D’Alembert’s principle, Sturm-Liouville theory, special functions, Fourier transforms and the method of characteristics. Part II contains more than 150 fully solved problems, which are ranked according to their difficulty. The last two chapters include sample Midterm and Final exams for this course with full solutions.

Book excerpt: Written in a clear and accurate language that students can understand, Trench's new book minimizes the number of explicitly stated theorems and definitions. Instead, he deals with concepts in a conversational style that engages students. He includes more than 250 illustrated, worked examples for easy reading and comprehension. One of the book's many strengths is its problems, which are of consistently high quality. Trench includes a thorough treatment of boundary-value problems and partial differential equations and has organized the book to allow instructors to select the level of technology desired. This has been simplified by using symbols, C and L, to designate the level of technology. C problems call for computations and/or graphics, while L problems are laboratory exercises that require extensive use of technology. Informal advice on the use of technology is included in several sections and instructors who prefer not to emphasize technology can ignore these exercises without interrupting the flow of material.

Book excerpt: This textbook is for the standard, one-semester, junior-senior course that often goes by the title "Elementary Partial Differential Equations" or "Boundary Value Problems;' The audience usually consists of stu dents in mathematics, engineering, and the physical sciences. The topics include derivations of some of the standard equations of mathemati cal physics (including the heat equation, the· wave equation, and the Laplace's equation) and methods for solving those equations on bounded and unbounded domains. Methods include eigenfunction expansions or separation of variables, and methods based on Fourier and Laplace transforms. Prerequisites include calculus and a post-calculus differential equations course. There are several excellent texts for this course, so one can legitimately ask why one would wish to write another. A survey of the content of the existing titles shows that their scope is broad and the analysis detailed; and they often exceed five hundred pages in length. These books gen erally have enough material for two, three, or even four semesters. Yet, many undergraduate courses are one-semester courses. The author has often felt that students become a little uncomfortable when an instructor jumps around in a long volume searching for the right topics, or only par tially covers some topics; but they are secure in completely mastering a short, well-defined introduction. This text was written to proVide a brief, one-semester introduction to partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: Unlike other books in the market, this second edition presents differential equations consistent with the way scientists and engineers use modern methods in their work. Technology is used freely, with more emphasis on modeling, graphical representation, qualitative concepts, and geometric intuition than on theoretical issues. It also refers to larger-scale computations that computer algebra systems and DE solvers make possible. And more exercises and examples involving working with data and devising the model provide scientists and engineers with the tools needed to model complex real-world situations.

Book excerpt: This book introduces finite difference methods for both ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs) and discusses the similarities and differences between algorithm design and stability analysis for different types of equations. A unified view of stability theory for ODEs and PDEs is presented, and the interplay between ODE and PDE analysis is stressed. The text emphasizes standard classical methods, but several newer approaches also are introduced and are described in the context of simple motivating examples.
