Book Synopsis Living Marine Resources by : Edwin S. Iversen
Download or read book Living Marine Resources written by Edwin S. Iversen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Marine Resources provides a thorough, up-to-date introduction to all aspects of fisheries science. This clearly written text offers insight into a topic of increasing importance--the wise utilization and management of sea fisheries to maximize production without exceeding their carrying capacity. Adoption of the approaches presented will improve the conservation and management of the many world fisheries that are suffering from years of inefficient practices. The book is divided into five sections, beginning with an introduction to the ocean environment and the various resource species. Part two examines fisheries biology, including age, growth, fecundity, and mortality, enabling readers to appreciate yield models designed to give estimates of maximum sustainable yield and maximum economic yield. The third part covers gear, methods, and landings and includes material on the handling and processing of seafood as well as aquaculture. In part four, yield models are presented to introduce students to theories on population dynamics, stock assessment, and management. The book concludes with coverage of recreational fisheries, including socioeconomic importance, catch and effort research, management techniques, and their interface with commercial fisheries. Living Marine Resources is an invaluable introduction to the subject for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of fisheries science. In addition, the material presented will be valuable to fishery and social scientists, fishery officers and administrators, and students in biology, engineering, economics, and law.

Book Synopsis Ecophysiology of the European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) and Related Species by : Dirk Weihrauch
Download or read book Ecophysiology of the European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) and Related Species written by Dirk Weihrauch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecophysiology of the Green Shore Crab (Carcinus maenas) and Related Species: Mechanisms Behind the Success of a Global Invader provides an in-depth perspective of this devastatingly invasive coastal species. During the last 175 years, Carcinus maenas has spread around the globe by human activities. Because of its ability to flourish in a wide variety of ecosystems and outcompete native species it has been listed as one of the top 100 worst global invaders. Written by international experts, this book focuses on Carcinus maenas and discusses other brachyurans with similar physiologies as comparisons, including control systems and mechanisms used. This book serves as a valuable resource for researchers in marine biology and invasive biology, as well as for university lecturers, government or environmental agencies. - Gathers all information on ecological physiology of this important species into one place - Discusses how this one species of crab has managed to be spread around the globe and survive in many different environments - Features a chapter by First Nations members on how this species may impact indigenous fisheries and culture

Book Synopsis Population Dynamics and the Tribolium Model: Genetics and Demography by : Robert F. Costantino
Download or read book Population Dynamics and the Tribolium Model: Genetics and Demography written by Robert F. Costantino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of populations is becoming increasingly focused on dynamics. We believe there are two reasons for this trend. The ftrst is the impactof nonlinear dynamics with its exciting ideas and colorful language: bifurcations, domains of attraction, chaos, fractals, strange attractors. Complexity, which is so very much a part of biology, now seems to be also a part of mathematics. A second trend is the accessibility of the new concepts. Thebarriers tocommunicationbetween theoristandexperimentalistseemless impenetrable. The active participationofthe experimentalist means that the theory will obtain substance. Our role is the application of the theory of dynamics to the analysis ofbiological populations. We began our work early in 1979 by writing an ordinary differential equation for the rateofchange in adult numbers which was based on an equilibrium model proposed adecadeearlier. Duringthenextfewmonths weftlledournotebookswithstraightforward deductions from the model and its associated biological implications. Slowly, some of the biological observations were explained and papers followed on a variety of topics: genetic and demographic stability, stationary probability distributions for population size, population growth asabirth-deathprocess, natural selectionanddensity-dependent population growth, genetic disequilibrium, and the stationary stochastic dynamics of adult numbers.
Book Synopsis The Biology and Management of Lobsters by :
Download or read book The Biology and Management of Lobsters written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume work presents a summary and review of the current state of lobster biology, ecology, physiology, behavior, and management. It emphasizes the biology of clawed lobsters (Nephropidae) and spiny lobsters (Palinuridae), with attention also given to slipper lobsters (Scyllaridae) and coral lobsters (Synaxidae). The first chapter of Volume 1 provides an overview of the general aspects of lobster biology that serves as an introduction for readers of both volumes. Subsequent chapters examine the topics of growth, neurobiology, reproduction, nutrition, pathology, social behavior, and migration patterns. The chapters in Volume II consider the ecology, population dynamics, fishery biology, and aquaculture of spiny and clawed lobsters. The topics selected in both volumes represent areas of current research whose findings have not been previously synthesized into a coherent form.An important feature of these volumes is the emphasis on the interaction between biology and management and culture. Many of the contributors have done research in both applied and basic biology and can articulate both points of view. The interaction between basic and applied research is of fundamental importance in these volumes in which management aspects of the research have been integrated with the basic biology of lobsters. The Biology and Management of Lobsterswill be of interest to crustacean biologists, marine biologists and ecologists, zoologists, physiologists, animal behavior researchers, aquaculturalists, fisheries biologists and managers of fisheries, neurobiologists, pathologists, and food scientists.
