Book Synopsis The Part-Time Vegetarian by : Nicola Graimes
Download or read book The Part-Time Vegetarian written by Nicola Graimes and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common link between vegetarians and part-time vegetarians (flexitarians) is that they like to base their meals on vegetables. Whether this is for health, economic or moral reasons (or a combination of all three), the fact is a flexitarian diet – one that is largely vegetarian but occasionally includes poultry, meat and seafood – is growing in popularity and is a long-term trend that cannot go ignored. Let’s face it the flexitarian or semi-vegetarian diet is the way to go: meat and fish are becoming prohibitively expensive; our current consumption cannot be sustained in years to come; and the health benefits of a vegetarian diet are well documented. But while the number of vegetarians is significant, a study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that nearly two out of three vegetarians occasionally like to meat, chicken or fish. The Part-Time Vegetarian Cookbook shows just how delicious, adaptable and varied this way of eating can be. Rather than taking centre stage, meat or fish are not the main focus of the recipes, which value the often under-used and under-valued vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, eggs and dairy foods. The recipes are not about taking something away, however, but adding a new dimension and consequently widening and extending the homecook’s repertoire of dishes. Organised by meal type, The Part-Time Vegetarian Cookbook features chapters on Breakfasts & Brunches, Small Bites (snacks, lunches and light meals), Weekday Suppers, Weekend Cooking, Food for Sharing (entertaining, special occasion, celebrations and al fresco) and Something Sweet. The recipes are all vegetarian, but can easily be adjusted to suit non-vegetarians.

Book Synopsis The Part-time Paradox by : Cynthia Fuchs Epstein
Download or read book The Part-time Paradox written by Cynthia Fuchs Epstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's professionals, especially women, are caught in a time paradox: can they build a career and a family at the same time? The Part-time Paradox explores the conflict and tension between the time demands of career and family life, and the choice of part-time work as a solution. The changing demographics of the family and the work place make it increasingly difficult for both men and women to meet the escalating time pressures facing a doctor, lawyer or manager. This book examines the social problems associated with demanding work schedules and choices, and also illustrates successful alternatives to full-time employment. It draws on interviews with attorneys in large law firms, in-house corporate counsels, and government service in order to explore the multiple dimensions of the part-time work solution. Although attitudes are beginning to change, one of the greatest impediments to part-time work is the stigma attached to it in many organizations, and the consequences for the careers of individuals who take it. Professionals define themselves, in part, by their commitment to overtime. The authors reveal how cultural perspectives of the true professional, part-time work, and stereotypes about gender roles can influence both an individual's decision making process and office policy. They show that in an environment where professionals perceive part-time work as deviant, it may require not just perserverance, but also a trade-off between time flexibility and professional status. The authors consider issues ranging from job security and the consequences of new technology, to the economics of part-time work and the division of labor in the family. The Part-time Paradox provides a timely overview of a growing crisis, as part-time and flex-time work arrangements increase.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The more I live the more I learn. The more I learn the more I realize the less I know (Alan and Manly Bergman) This book is a slightly revised version of my dissertation thesis "Wages, hours restrictions and employment" accepted in July 2001 by the Department of Economics at Mannheim University. Most of the studies are part of the re search project "Working hours flexibility and employment" (Arbeitszeitjlexi bilisierung und Beschiijtigung) which was conducted at the Centre for Euro pean Economic Research (ZEW) with financial support by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung. Now that all the work is complete, nothing remains but to thank all the people who supported the writing of my thesis. Firstly, I am indebted to my advisor Prof. Wolfgang Franz, who always furthered my academic work and encouraged me to take opportunities beyond the standard path. His guiding questions and comments were very valuable in gaining an overview of the whole issue. Furthermore, I am especially grateful to Prof. Daniel Hamermesh, my second advisor. I gained tremendously from the fruitful discussions during my stay at the University of Texas in Austin. His encouragement and verve were essential support factors in the completion of my work. Prof. Arthur van Soest and Prof. Franc;ois Laisney both contributed to the technical and methodological standard of my analysis by patiently discussing various model specifications and nerve-racking convergence problems.
