Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neapolitan Postcards gathers a diverse group of international scholars to investigate unexplored transnational aspects of the intimate yet globally popular canzone napoletana. Performed and beloved worldwide in almost every language, the style had hits such as “Funiculì funiculà” (1880) and “’O sole mio” (1898) which sold millions of copies. These hits fueled the tradition’s spread across the world over the course of the twentieth century with the eventual popularity of covers by singers and musicians of all music genres and styles, from popular music to opera and jazz. This book is the first scholarly work that considers the specific complexities of the international Neapolitan Song scenes through case studies from Argentina, England, Greece, and the United States, employing analyses of compositions, iconographical sources, international films, mechanical musical instruments, performances, and recordings devoted to the canzone napoletana.

Book excerpt: Being sent for piano lessons was probably the single worst thing that could have happened in my young life. But thanks to an exceptional lady and piano teacher named Florence Powers, I wound up unexpectedly becoming a professional piano player. Here are some curious things about the piano that I picked up along the way... Playing the piano has got to be one of life’s greatest treasures. In my estimation, there are few other activities that can even begin to compare with the ability to play this amazing instrument. As you can probably guess, I have the highest regard for those individuals who have mastered the art of playing the piano. Some performers have taken the art to a very high level, often out of the reach of most players. But my aim here is to present a simple accessible approach on learning how to listen to, or how to approach playing the piano for one’s own pleasure... first and foremost. This self-centered idea doesn’t necessarily imply being selfish, but it probably does require a slight adjustment to one’s priorities. However, if you can get around this inconvenience, the possibilities are sitting right there in front of you... and all you have to do is reach out and take. My aim here is to demystify the piano for both listeners or those who wish to learn how to get started in learning how play this amazing instrument. In any event, I feel that pleasure can be derived by having a wider understanding as just what the piano actually is. And while a book such as this one may be helpful to those who wish to learn to play the piano, there is no substitute for a live teacher. However, it’s extremely important to find a teacher that can fulfill one’s personal musical taste and ambition. There is much involved if a student wishes to become a proficient music reader, thus having a good teacher is essential to success in this area. Take your time in finding the right one... and good luck! However, before looking at the piano, it’s also important to establish what kind of music one is interested in, whether for listening or performing. For purposes of this book, I have arbitrarily broken it down into four major forms: Classical, Standards, Popular and Jazz. Classical leads the list as the music that has been around longer, much longer than the other two forms of music. It represents the foundation of all of today’s music. Much of it is seriously challenging to play, and requires years of dedicated practice. At the concert level, Olympic style discipline prevails, as the techniques of performance far surpasses the scope of this book. Be that as it may, classical music has an abundance of priceless melodiesthat can be played in a simplified manner while still retaining their pure magic for listeners. (and pianists ) Music operates on principles that were founded in the past 600 years, they carry with them an enormous amount of human cultural genius, including the invention of equal temperament.

Book excerpt: A detailed and vivid diary recounting the wartime experience in Paris during the occupation of France. “September 1939 slipped into October quite silently as if it did not want to attract any notice. The atmosphere is tense with expectancy, ready for the critical times that lie ahead. Everyone is geared for eventualities with courage and the élan of high purpose. Members of the Embassy staff have received their orders to leave for different posts: Bordeaux for some, Nantes for others and for others the Château de Candé. Some of us volunteered to remain in Paris. I was one of them. Paris will be safe or as dangerous as any other place, perhaps safer as every effort will be made to protect the city with its priceless works of art and its beauty.” Marie-Louise Dilkes’ astute observations of life in Paris during World War II are written from the unique perspective of the receptionist for the American Embassy. The Embassy was the first—or last—resort for many caught up in the chaos of war, and hers was the first face they would see as they walked through the grand doors. She takes us from the conquest and occupation of Paris by German forces but includes the war-time journey of the American consulate in Paris from Paris to Lisbon to Lyon to Bern and back to Paris. She ends with the triumphant return of members of the American Embassy staff, after the Allies forced the German Army out of Paris, and the reestablishment of the American Embassy in Paris.

Book excerpt: Breath, Eyes, Memory (1994), the novel born from Edwidge Danticat’s childhood in Haiti and immigration to New York City, was one of the great literary debuts of recent times, marking the emergence of an impressive talent in addition to opening up an entire culture to a broad general readership. This gifted author went on to win the American Book Award in 1999 for her novel, The Farming of Bones (1998), attracting further critical acclaim. Offering an accessible guide for readers and critics alike, this book is the first publication devoted entirely to Danticat’s unique and remarkable work. It is also distinctive in that it addresses all of her published writing up to The Dew Breaker (2004), including her writing for children, her travel writing, her short fiction, and her novels. The book contains an exclusive interview with Danticat, in which she discusses her recent memoir, Brother, I’m Dying (2007), winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. It also includes an extensive bibliography. With contributions from Danticat’s fellow creative writers from both the Caribbean and the United States as well as leading scholars of Caribbean literature, this collection of essays aims to enrich readers’ understanding of the various geographical, literary, and cultural contexts of her work and to demonstrate how it both influences and is influenced by them. Book excerpt: A spellbinding novel about Elizabeth I from the internationally bestselling author of the Guenevere and Tristan and Isolde trilogies. Publicly declared a bastard at the age of three, daughter of a disgraced and executed mother, last in the line of succession to the throne of England, Elizabeth I inherited an England ravaged by bloody religious conflict, at war with Spain and France, and badly in debt. When she died in 1603, after a forty-five year reign, her empire spanned two continents and was united under one church, victorious in war, and blessed with an overflowing treasury. What’s more, her favorites—William Shakespeare, Sir Francis Drake, and Sir Walter Raleigh—had made the Elizabethan era a cultural Golden Age still remembered today. But for Elizabeth the woman, tragedy went hand in hand with triumph. Politics and scandal forced the passionate queen to reject her true love, Robert Dudley, and to execute his stepson, her much-adored Lord Essex. Now in this spellbinding novel, Rosalind Miles brings to life the woman behind the myth. By turns imperious, brilliant, calculating, vain, and witty, this is the Elizabeth the world never knew. From the days of her brutal father, Henry VIII, to her final dying moments, Elizabeth tells her story in her own words.
