Book excerpt: On a chilly Thursday in December, Nick Pernisco woke up from his Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery with a few new holes in his head -- and a whole new lease on life with Parkinson's. In the follow up to his best-selling Parkinson's Warrior: Fighting Back and Taking Control, Nick takes you on an intimate, first-person journey through the full DBS experience. With candor and humor, Deep Brain Stimulation: A Journey to Relief offers inspiration and accessible information on what you need to know about DBS, what to expect along each step of the way, and the renewed possibilities for life after DBS. If you or your loved one is considering DBS, but you're unsure, or scared, or just want to know more, this book is for you. From the Introduction On December 6th, 2018 I underwent Deep Brain Stimulation surgery to alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. My first symptoms had appeared in 2009, so it was almost exactly nine years later that I would go under the drill and knife to get some relief. I had some apprehension at first - I mean, it's brain surgery - but I'm glad I went through with it. Although DBS was not a cure for Parkinson's, the surgery set back the clock on my symptoms about 10-12 years. In this sequel to the original Parkinson's Warrior book, I detail the circumstances that lead me to consider Deep Brain Stimulation, the essential details about what the surgery does and how it works, and a first-hand account of my own surgery. Just like in the original Parkinson's Warrior book, I pull no punches. I give you every detail, no matter how frightening it might sound. My hope is that, after reading this book, Deep Brain Stimulation won't sound so frightening. The reason I wrote this book is to demonstrate that an option exists to alleviate Parkinson's symptoms, and that people with Parkinson's do not have to lose hope when their symptoms worsen. I had Deep Brain Stimulation surgery to give me time to live my life more normally until a cure for Parkinson's is discovered. The second part of this book involves my life after DBS surgery. I discuss some expectations I had about the surgery, how I felt after surgery, and how having a Warrior mentality helped me adjust to a new normal. I hope this second section will inspire you and make you think about your life, remembering that we only get one shot at life, so we better make the most of it. Finally, I hope that by reading this book, you will consider having DBS. It's brain surgery, but it's not so scary, and it will absolutely change your life. I've gotten my life back thanks to DBS, and so I'm happy to sing its praises from the rooftops. I look forward to you joining me on this journey as I recount my story. And please, if you ever have any questions or need guidance to help find the right information for you, write to me since I'd love to hear from you: [email protected].

Book excerpt: "After reading this book and following Howard's recipe for some time now, I can only say this book is worth each and every word. It is highly valuable and, by the way, I feel much better now and my symptoms have almost disappear so far. I recommend to anyone who is seeking some alternative path to his treatment on Parkinson's." - Amazon Kunde, Amazon Verified Purchaser. "Howard's Recipe For Recovery is a breath of fresh air; If you do the recipe you will be on the road to recovery, the same road the cured walked before us, six of them so far in the past seven years. How full of hope is that?! The first sign that things were turning around for me was that my sense of smell came back after twenty years. Now where before there was despair I'm so thankful to have hope and the means to make it happen...now there are tears of joy! It's a great book...Don't miss it! Hope fulfilled is priceless and it's in your hand. Buy the book!!!!" - Thomas J., Amazon Verified Purchaser. "This book is the fascinating story of his recovery, and the recovery of others over the years afterwards, using his Recipe...Although there are a few individual, poorly substantiated claims of curing Parkinson's, this is the only one I know of that has cured multiple identified individuals of this "incurable" disease. We owe Howard a great deal of gratitude for his generosity in sharing his Recipe with us here and on his extensive website. His Recipe is likely to be the best cure available over the next decade." - prestonpdx, Amazon Verified Purchaser. Howard Shifke fully recovered from Parkinson's Disease. This memoir presents Howard's story of getting Parkinson's and provides a detailed account of how he won the fight against it. The memoir tells the story of what it was like for Howard to live day-to-day with Parkinson's, getting through the daily challenges and misgivings as well as how he looked toward the future with hope. Howard suffered with internal tremors; extremely poor balance; Bradykinesia (walking -- hunched forward, shuffled feet, arms did not swing); rigidity (arms, legs and upper back were tight and extremely painful); constipation; inability to stand up straight, to get out of a chair without using arms, to go up and down stairs without holding railing; difficulty getting a utensil to his mouth when trying to eat; falling asleep in middle of the day; frozen face; inability to write or to type with two hands; extreme fatigue. In the fall of 2009, Howard Shifke was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. His mother had Parkinson's for twenty-four years before dying in 2007, just two years prior to Howard diagnosis of Parkinson's. Having watched her physically deteriorate from the disease and mentally deteriorate from the medications was difficult and frightening.Howard did not want to end up the way his mother had ended up with the disease. Fortunately, in 1999, Howard had started studying alternative healing and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the ten years leading up to his diagnosis, he had learned the body has the ability to heal itself. As a result, Howard decided he would endeavor to recover from Parkinson's, and he developed an alternative treatment methodology called his Parkinson's Recipe for Recovery(R). Nine months later, he won the fight against Parkinson's with his full recovery. In Howard's two neurologist visits subsequent to his full recovery, his neurologist put him through all of the tests used for the original diagnosis. Both times, his neurologist documented in Howard's medical records that there were no signs or symptoms of Parkinson's Disease.Howard has been symptom free fully recovered from Parkinson's since June 12, 2010.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one deal with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease at the age of forty-three? My Degeneration, by former Anchorage Daily News staff cartoonist Peter Dunlap-Shohl, answers the question with humor and passion, recounting the author’s attempt to come to grips with the “malicious whimsy” of this chronic, progressive, and disabling disease. This graphic novel tracks Dunlap-Shohl’s journey through depression, the worsening symptoms of the disease, the juggling of medications and their side effects, the impact on relations with family and community, and the raft of mental and physical changes wrought by the malady. My Degeneration examines the current state of Parkinson’s care, including doctor/patient relations and the repercussions of a disease that, among other things, impairs movement, can rob patients of their ability to speak or write, degrades sufferers’ ability to deal with complexity, and interferes with the sense of balance. Readers learn what it’s like to undergo a dramatic, demanding, and audacious bit of high-tech brain surgery that can mysteriously restore much of a patient’s control over symptoms. But My Degeneration is more than a Parkinson’s memoir. Dunlap-Shohl gives the person newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease the information necessary to cope with it on a day-to-day basis. He chronicles the changes that life with the disease can bring to the way one sees the world and the way one is seen by the wider community. Dunlap-Shohl imparts a realistic basis for hope—hope not only to carry on, but to enjoy a decent quality of life.

Book excerpt: "A modern-day classic."—Ron Charles, Washington Post “A spectacular invention.”—The New York Times "Compulsively readable."—NPR Things do not bode well for Father Julius. . . A street preacher decked out in denim robes and running shoes, Julius is a source of inspiration for a community that knows nothing of his scandalous origins. But when a nearby mental hospital releases its patients to run amok in his neighborhood, his trusted if bedraggled flock turns expectantly to Julius to find out what’s going on. Amid the descending chaos, Julius encounters a hospital escapee who babbles prophecies of doom, and the growing palpable sense of impending danger intensifies . . . as does the feeling that everyone may be relying on a street preacher just a little too much. Still, Julius decides he must confront the forces that threaten his congregation—including the peculiar followers of a religious cult, the mysterious men and women dressed all in red seen fleetingly amid the bedlam, and an enigmatic smoking figure who seems to know what’s going to happen just before it does. The Revisionaries is a wildly imaginative, masterfully rendered, and suspenseful tale that conjures the bold outlandish stylishness of Thomas Pynchon, Margaret Atwood, and Alan Moore—while being unlike anything that’s come before.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
