Book excerpt: In the Paris of the early 1960s, a host of French glamour magazines sprang up, featuring voluptuous nude pin-up girls plucked from the streets and thrust in front of hungry cameras in sleazy backstreet studios, apartments or remote country locations. Magazines like "Paradise”, "Sensation” and "Pink And Black” were at the forefront, featuring scores of these amateur but sexy young women in a multitude of alluring poses and settings. Jean le Baptiste has assembled from his own collection a stunning array of vintage photographs from these magazines, a visual feast which at once takes us back to the fashions and styles of more innocent decades, yet delivers a strong erotic thrill at the rediscovery of these wanton Parisian women in their sexual prime. PARIS PUSSY 4 contains 39 timeless and shamelessly provocative images from this bygone age.

Book Synopsis The Attack on Feudalism in Eighteenth-Century France by : J.Q.C. Mackrell
Download or read book The Attack on Feudalism in Eighteenth-Century France written by J.Q.C. Mackrell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2006. Feudalism is normally associated with eighteenth-century France only in its more bizarre survivals, as in The Marriage of Figaro, when his seigneur claims the rights to spend the first night with the bride. If feudalism menat no more in the eighteenth century than a few quaint customs that could tickle an audence at the Comedie Francaise, why did French writers attack it so furiously? The author suggests that contemporary writers saw remnants of the feudal regime as important less in themselves, than as symbols of an attitude of mind which the 'enlightened' among them would no longer tolerate. Instead of representing the ideas of the eighteenth century through the eyes of a few outstanding writers, Dr Mackrell has tried to reconstitute the intellectual climate of the ancien regime from the works of largely unknown historians, jurists, economists and others. In this way he illuminates the rich texture of eighteenth-century French thought, without which the ideas of Voltaire, Montesquieu and even Rousseau lose much of their meaning. This study breathes life into the fierce controversies that shook the Age of Reason long before the outbreak of Revolution.

Book Synopsis The New Grove Stravinsky by : Stanley Sadie
Download or read book The New Grove Stravinsky written by Stanley Sadie and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2003-03-15 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of Russian, French, and later American nationality, Stravinsky's musical styles are startlingly diverse, reflecting his life and era; from Tsarist Russia, to 1920s France and post-war USA. His early years in Russia saw him launch his international career, with Dyagilve's Ballets Russes in Paris and the premieres of The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring. Between 1920-1939 Stravinsky lived and worked in France, producing his great neo-classical compositions, reactivating the modes and manners of the eighteenth century. This stylistic inclination eventually gave way to a highly individual use of serial techniques in his last years, when he took up residence in the United States. This biography of Igor Stravinsky is one in a new series of composer biographies, derived and adapted from the second edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. These newly written biographies bring the best of the book-length pieces in The New Grove to a wider audience. Each title provides fresh new insights into the life and works of a major composer, derived from the most recent scholarship. In addition to a detailed and informative view of the subject's life and works, written by an expert in the field, each book includes comprehensive, tabular work-lists and a fully revised and updated bibliography.
Book Synopsis Song Interpretation in 21st-Century Pop Music by : Ralf von Appen
Download or read book Song Interpretation in 21st-Century Pop Music written by Ralf von Appen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing books on the analysis of popular music focus on theory and methodology, and normally discuss parts of songs briefly as examples. The impression often given is that songs are being chosen simply to illuminate and exemplify a theoretical position. In this book the obverse is true: songs take centre stage and are given priority. The authors analyse and interpret them intensively from a variety of theoretical positions that illuminate the song. Thus, methods and theories have to prove their use value in the face of a heterogeneous, contemporary repertoire. The book brings together researchers from very different cultural backgrounds and encourages them to compare their different hearings and to discuss the ways in which they make sense of specific songs. All songs analysed are from the new millennium, most of them not older than three years. Because the most widely popular styles are too often ignored by academics, this book aims to shed light on how million sellers work musically. Therefore, it encompasses a broad palette, highlighting mainstream pop (Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Lucenzo, Amy McDonald), but also accounting for critically acclaimed ’indie’ styles (Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, PJ Harvey), R&B (Destiny’s Child, Janelle Monae), popular hard rock (Kings of Leon, Rammstein), and current electronic music (Andrés, Björk). By concentrating on 13 well-known songs, this book offers some model analyses that can very easily be studied at home or used in seminars and classrooms for students of popular music at all academic levels.
