Book Synopsis Meanings of Abstract Art by : Paul Crowther
Download or read book Meanings of Abstract Art written by Paul Crowther and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional art is based on conventions of resemblance between the work and that which it is a representation "of". Abstract art, in contrast, either adopts alternative modes of visual representation or reconfigures mimetic convention. This book explores the relation of abstract art to nature (taking nature in the broadest sense—the world of recognisable objects, creatures, organisms, processes, and states of affairs). Abstract art takes many different forms, but there are shared key structural features centered on two basic relations to nature. The first abstracts from nature, to give selected aspects of it a new and extremely unfamiliar appearance. The second affirms a natural creativity that issues in new, autonomous forms that are not constrained by mimetic conventions. (Such creativity is often attributed to the power of the unconscious.) The book covers three categories: classical modernism (Mondrian, Malevich, Kandinsky, Arp, early American abstraction); post-war abstraction (Pollock, Still, Newman, Smithson, Noguchi, Arte Povera, Michaux, postmodern developments); and the broader historical and philosophical scope.

Book Synopsis Abstraction in Reverse by : Alexander Alberro
Download or read book Abstraction in Reverse written by Alexander Alberro and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the mid-twentieth century, Latin American artists working in several different cities radically altered the nature of modern art. Reimagining the relationship of art to its public, these artists granted the spectator an unprecedented role in the realization of the artwork. The first book to explore this phenomenon on an international scale, Abstraction in Reverse traces the movement as it evolved across South America and parts of Europe. Alexander Alberro demonstrates that artists such as Tomás Maldonado, Jesús Soto, Julio Le Parc, and Lygia Clark, in breaking with the core tenets of the form of abstract art known as Concrete art, redefined the role of both the artist and the spectator. Instead of manufacturing autonomous art, these artists produced artworks that required the presence of the spectator to be complete. Alberro also shows the various ways these artists strategically demoted regionalism in favor of a new modernist voice that transcended the traditions of the nation-state and contributed to a nascent globalization of the art world.
Book Synopsis Abstract Crossings by : María Amalia García
Download or read book Abstract Crossings written by María Amalia García and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward the middle of the 1950s, abstract art became a dominant trend in the Latin American cultural scene. Many artists incorporated elements of abstraction into their rigorous artistic vocabularies, while at the same time, the representation of geometric lines and structures filtered into everyday life, appearing in textiles, posters, murals, and landscapes. The translation of a field-changing Spanish-language book, Abstract Crossings analyzes the relationship between, on the one hand, the emergence of abstract proposals in avant-garde groups and, on the other, the institutionalization and newfound hegemony of abstract poetics as part of Latin America’s imaginary of modernization. A profusion of mid-century artistic institutional exchanges between Argentina and Brazil makes a study of the trajectories of abstraction in these two countries particularly valuable. Examining the work of artists such as Max Bill, Lygia Clark, Waldemar Cordeiro, and Tomás Maldonado, author María Amalia García rewrites the artistic history of the period and proposes a novel reading of the cultural dialogue between Argentina and Brazil. This is the first book in the new Studies on Latin American Art series, supported by a gift from the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art.
Book Synopsis Cultural Mobility in the Interwar Avant-Garde Art Network by : Michał Wenderski
Download or read book Cultural Mobility in the Interwar Avant-Garde Art Network written by Michał Wenderski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the issue of cultural mobility within the interwar network of the European avant-garde, focusing on selected writers, artists, architects, magazines and groups from Poland, Belgium and Netherlands. Regardless of their apparent linguistic, cultural and geographical remoteness, their mutual exchange and relationships were both deep and broad, and of great importance for the wider development of interwar avant-garde literature, art and architecture. This analysis is based on a vast research corpus encompassing original, often previously overlooked periodicals, publications and correspondence gathered from archives around the world.
Book Synopsis Biocentrism and Modernism by : OliverA.I. Botar
Download or read book Biocentrism and Modernism written by OliverA.I. Botar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the complex intersections between art and scientific approaches to the natural world, Biocentrism and Modernism reveals another side to the development of Modernism. While many historians have framed this movement as being mechanistic and "against" nature, the essays in this collection illuminate the role that nature-centric ideologies played in late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth-century Modernism. The essays in Biocentrism and Modernism contend that it is no accident that Modernism arose at the same time as the field of modern biology. From nineteenth-century discoveries, to the emergence of the current environmentalist movement during the 1960s, artists, architects, and urban planners have responded to currents in the scientific world. Sections of the volume treat both philosophic worldviews and their applications in theory, historiography, and urban design. This collection also features specific case studies of individual artists, including Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Jackson Pollock.
Book Synopsis Sculpture 1900-1945 by : Penelope Curtis
Download or read book Sculpture 1900-1945 written by Penelope Curtis and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the significant growth of sculpture as an artistic form in Europe and America from 1900-1945. Using a clearly-defined thematic structure it identifies key issues and developments throughout this important period in the history of art. Individualchapters cover: public sculpture, the monument, the object, image-making, the built environment, the figurative ideal, and different materials. These themes broadly reflect the changing cultural and political climate of a turbulent period which included two world wars, each preceded by widespreadrising nationalism. The practice of sculpture is considered within the wider artistic context of painting and architecture and the development of international art markets. Auguste Rodin, whose ground-breaking exhibition opened in Paris in 1900, serves as the book's point of departure, and as arecurrent point of reference.
Download or read book Cubism written by Emily Braun and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated volume tells the story of Cubism through twenty-two essays that explore the most significant private holding of Cubist art in the world today, the Leonard A. Lauder Collection, now a promised gift to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The eighty works featured in this volume—by Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, and Pablo Picasso‐are among the most important and visually arresting in the movement’s history. These masterpieces, critical to the development of Cubism, include such groundbreaking paintings as Braque’s Trees at L’Estaque, considered one of the very first Cubist pictures; Picasso’s Still Life with Fan: “L’Indépendant,” one of the first to introduce typography; Gris’s noirish, uncanny The Man at the Café, one of his most celebrated collages; and Léger’s uniquely ambitious Composition (The Typographer). Written by renowned experts on this subject, the essays trace the evolution of Cubism from its origins in the still lifes, portraits, and collages of Braque and Picasso through the precisely delineated compositions by Gris that prefigure the Synthetic Cubism of the war years to Léger’s distinctive intersections of spherical, cylindrical, and cubic forms that evoke the syncopated rhythms of modern life. Also included are a fascinating interview in which Leonard Lauder discusses his approach to collecting, an investigative essay on the information gleaned from the backs of the works themselves, and an authoritative catalogue that further establishes the lives of these magnificent objects. A publication to place alongside the great histories of Modernism, this comprehensive book will stand as the resource for understanding Cubism for many years to come. -
