While China has amicably resolved boundary disputes with twelve out of its fourteen neighbouring countries, it is yet to resolve its boundary disputes with India and Bhutan as also its maritime disputes in the South China Sea and East China Sea. This volume looks at the complex dynamics of India–China boundary disputes which remains unresolved. It is still the biggest challenge to the relations between the two countries. From the Indian perspective securing Arunachal and the Indus Watershed is highly important. From the Chinese point of view Karakoram and Xinjiang–Tibet road must be respected. Secondary issues have always occupied a central and pivotal focus in the relations between India and China. This work also shows how British efforts to secure a defined and natural boundary began immediately after the creation of Jammu and Kashmir in 1846 after Amritsar treaty. In the eastern sector such an effort began only in the first decade of twentieth century. Relevant documents have been presented which examines the role of bureaucrats, diplomats, generals and surveyors. It examines the treaties, conventions, correspondence as well as internal debates between changing British officials and their conflicting British policies. Nehru refused Chou En Lai in 1960, which in turn led to the unilateralism in Chinese attitude after 1962. The volume breaks new ground by evaluating the differing policies, and explains how a secured boundary can ultimately be agreed upon. Book excerpt: The groups of people from various walks of life who travelled with Mohanji to experience this enigma called Kailash. This is their story. This book could open up doors and windows and bring new light into the minds of spiritual seekers, curious thinkers, travellers to Kailash or even a casual reader. Mount Kailash – the most powerful energy portal of earth. Kailash stands tall in the horizons of various religions and spiritual paths as an ultimate goal and destination for its seekers. It challenges man to test the death of his spiritual conviction. It literally moves mountains in endurance. Man versus Kailash could mean the ultimate realisation that every man is indeed Kailash - in depth and mystery. The mystery and power of the yogi God, called Shiva overwhelms a man to take up this journey of a lifetime against all odds. This is a life changing expedition. This is the ultimate test of faith. This is the ultimate pilgrimage of man to his own eternal abode. The idea of this book was conceived after this group of pilgrims made the most important journey of their lives - the Kailash Manasarovar pilgrimage - which was made more sublime with the presence of their spiritual teacher, Mohanji. This is an unusual format for a book wherein different people from all walks of life came together to share their experiences after the pilgrimage in July 2012. It has taken nine months, the full term for a human life to take birth, to compile and rewrite this book. In the course of this period it was written and rewritten in three different formats. A note from Mohanji is followed by the significance of Kailash-Manasarovar and a complete narrative of the journey written by the editor, Aparna Sharma. Chapter 5 is in the words of all those who came together to create this book, some fellow pilgrims and some who did not attend the pilgrimage but were connected, in spirit through mystical chords of love.

Book excerpt: Ayodhya tussle - For Hindus, Ram Janma Bhoomi is a “Place of Veneration” and for Muslims, Babri Masjid is a “Place of Ritual Prostration”. The Babri Masjid (Mosque of Babur), the Tughlaq-style mosque, was built in 1528 by General Mir Baqi on the orders of Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur, the founder and first emperor of the Mughal dynasty in the Indian subcontinent. The building is facile with Islamic architectural elements but devoid of minarets (Call Towers for prayers), etc. The Babri Masjid was neither a mausoleum nor a cenotaph. The placing of Ram Lalla Idol on December 22, 1949 inside the Babri Masjid Central Dome became the aggravating point of the title dispute. The blood-curdling Ram-Janma-Bhoomi–Babri-Masjid dispute is over a tiny area of 2.77 acres of land out of the 3.287 million square kilometre vast tract of India. Solutions from the erstwhile British rulers and Indian Prime Ministers found no results. At last, it was the reign of the 14th Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Damodardas Modi, that witnessed the lawful solution – amicable both for the Hindus and for the Muslims. Now, the golden era of peace and prosperity, brotherhood and tolerance has blossomed in the Indian soil. The “Basic Structure” (Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity) enshrined in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution has been reaffirmed by this landmark judgment. We can assert that this book takes you to the inroads of the cementing facts and figures of the Ayodhya Dispute unravelled by this unanimous historical judgment of the Supreme Court of India.

Book excerpt: Loving Stones is a study of devotees' conceptions of and worshipful interactions with Mount Govardhan, a sacred mountain located in the Braj region of north-central India that has for centuries been considered an embodied form of Krishna. It is often said that worship of Mount Govardhan "makes the impossible possible." In this book, David L. Haberman examines the perplexing paradox of an infinite god embodied in finite form, wherein each particular form is non-different from the unlimited. He takes on the task of interpreting the worship of a mountain and its stones for a culture in which this practice is quite alien. This challenge involves exploring the interpretive strategies that may explain what seems un-understandable, and calls for theoretical considerations of incongruity, inconceivability, and other realms of the impossible. This aspect of the book includes critical consideration of the place and history of the pejorative concept of idolatry (and its twin, anthropomorphism) in the comparative study of religions. Loving Stones uses the worship of Mount Govardhan as a site to explore ways in which scholars engaged in the difficult work of representing other cultures struggle to make "the impossible possible."

A sad and heartbroken Sara sees Rahul off at Rome Airport after the tour. Would they be fortunate enough, like Sudip and Rita, to unite in a bond of marriage with the happy consent of all? Or would they be defeated by the barriers of distance, protocols, injustice, social and cultural differences and family tragedies? Or be blessed with the power of the almighty, who proclaimed in Srimad Bhagbad Gita, “I and only I, the omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient, decide the fate of all living beings and their actions in the mundane Earth?”

As Eastern religions and related practices such as yoga become increasingly popular, there is a need for resources that explain where these practices come from and what they mean.
