Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore principal perceptions regarding parental involvement opportunities and the potential impact these opportunities have on student academic achievement at the middle school level. Data were collected from 82 principals/assistant principals across the state of Pennsylvania utilizing a survey instrument and personal interviews from 10 respondents. As self-reported, participants were divided into two groups: those from middle schools that made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) based upon the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) scores for the 2011-2012 school year (n=47) and those from middle schools that did not meet the requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress (n=35). Participant responses concluded that a variety of parental involvement opportunities are afforded to the parents within the middle schools represented in this study. Further results of this study indicated that more middle school principals/assistant principals from schools that did not make AYP perceived parental involvement to be "Extremely Important" as compared to those participants from schools that made AYP. Vast majority of the participants from both groups perceived parental involvement as having a positive benefit to student academic achievement.

Around 1 in 3 parents (29%) felt very involved in their childs school life, and primary school parents were more likely to feel this way than secondary school parents. Mothers were more likely to say that they were very involved than were fathers. Around 72% of all parents agreed that they wanted more involvement, and a third definitely agreed. Among the barriers to involvement, parents cited the competing demands in their lives such as work commitments, demands of other children, childcare difficulties, and lack of time generally. Almost all parents were happy with the schools attitude toward them, with a large majority finding the school welcoming (94%) and willing to involve them (84%). Parents particularly value face-to-face contact with teachers, but a significant minority thought that they would be labeled trouble makers if they talked too much. Parents were generally happy with the quality of written communications coming from schools, although a significant minority (27%) thought that the general information was spoiled by jargon. Many parents were not aware of the labels given to recent educational initiatives, and 35% did not recognize the term Home School Agreement, even though all had been invited to sign one. To investigate this, 138 sixth and eighth grade parents completed researcher constructed surveys and open-ended response questions. Ten parents were interviewed regarding their parental involvement practices. The findings of this study revealed that parents believed communicating the importance of education and academic expectations along with participating in school activities, communicating with school staff, monitoring school progress, checking homework, and talking daily with their child are activities that parents should engage in during the middle school years. The results of this study indicated that parents believed it is their responsibility to help their child succeed in school and that showing genuine interest in their child's accomplishments as well as modeling expected behaviors and learning skills is important. The majority of parents believed their involvement influenced their child's motivation to learn. The study concluded that parental involvement impacted adolescent learning and that academic socialization could positively influence parent involvement and student achievement. Communicating the value and use of education to their children, discussing learning styles and strategies, fostering the educational and occupational hopes and dreams, linking school learning to current events, and preparing and making plans for the future are the most important activities that can be done, by parents, during the middle school years.

This was significant to understanding why middle schools struggle with fostering parent involvement. Three focus groups comprised of sixteen parent participants from one middle school in Missouri were utilized. As parents discussed their views and experiences a deeper understanding of parent involvement emerged. The perceptions of parents were analyzed to understand how they perceive, define, and understand their role in terms of academic and social outcomes for their adolescent child's education. They considered parent participation as a partnership with the school requiring their involvement within three major constructs: learning in the home, parenting, and volunteering. However, the transition to middle school left them wondering how to support their child and knowing what role they should take in their education. This contributed to weakened parent self-efficacy and role construction. Difficulty navigating parent social networks emerged as a significant barrier to parent participation, suggesting it as another possible construct parents perceive as critical for parent participation. Findings suggest that parents have different perceptions about their role and efficacy for involvement. However, relationships with other parents may serve to lessen the disconnect between parents and middle schools, especially as students transition during the first year of middle school.

Under the provisions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act: No Child Left Behind (Elementary and Secondary Education Act, 2001), it is now a mandate. Moreover, in the current climate of emphasis upon student performance and school accountability, schools need not just the support of parents, but also their full involvement in meaningful partnerships. The purpose of this qualitative study was to develop a better understanding of the factors that significantly affect the level of parent involvement during the middle-school years. This was accomplished through the use of open-ended interviews with 24 participants in Northeast Tennessee comprised of 4 elementary and 4 middle-school principals along with 16 middle-school parents who were identified by their child's principal as having been highly involved when their child was in elementary school. The findings from this study suggested that the parent and principal perceptions regarding the factors that influence the decline in parent involvement during the middle-school years are often quite different. In general, perceptions of parents and principals that were held in common were those associated with the role of the parent, the positive effects of parent involvement upon student success, and the role of the principal in modeling the encouragement of parent involvement. The finding suggested, however, that there was significant disparity between parent and principal perceptions with regard to how well middle schools encourage parent involvement. Major recommendations included middle schools communicating with feeder elementary schools to identify highly involved parents of rising middle-school students, a system of personally contacting such parents as a means to encourage their continued involvement, and the establishment of a dialogue among parents and educators with regard to developing an action plan based upon best pr.

This project study explored parents' perceptions of involvement in school for American Indian children attending a rural public school district in western United States. The research questions investigated the effect of understanding parent preferences for involvement at school that would improve parental involvement and enhance student success. The theoretical framework for this project study were found in the works of Bronfenbrenners' ecological systems theory, Epsteins' overlapping spheres of influence, and Darling and Steinberg's contextual parenting model. A qualitative research design and case study interviewing approach identified parent involvement specifics at home and at school. The sample consisted of 3 American Indian parents of middle school students, and an interpretative data analysis included coding and categorizing themes from interview transcriptions and review of tribal artifacts with all sources identifying common goals about education in the region: (a) high expectations for academic achievement, (b) parent and community involvement in school governance, (c) collaboration with the community, and (d) effective communications with teachers and administrators to enhance student success. A 3-year longitudinal program, Parenting Academy for Academic Success (PAAS) was created to encourage and develop parent advocates for academic excellence at the school. The program design fosters parenting skills building and education advocacy through parent-led workshops. This project study promotes positive social change by increasing parental involvement at the school that can help improve academic achievement.
