Book excerpt: Abstract: This study tested the theoretical link between Minuchin's Psychosomatic Model and difficulties with the separation-individuation process as they may have related to eating disorder symptoms. Only adolescent females participated in the study with high school (n = 133) and college (n = 124) students representing different stages within the individuation process. Strong associations with negative family interaction and perceived parental relationships were found to correlate with eating-disorder symptoms. Age also showed significance in perceived parental relationships. Canonical analysis for the combined sample suggested general problems with family enmeshment, and not differentiating between self and others correlated stronger with eating-disordered variables than the specific variables that were predicted.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eating disorder symptoms among young women today continue to be a growing concern. Many women, teenagers, and young girls struggle with a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), or ED-NOS eating disorder not otherwise specified. There continues to be an emphasis on "thinness" in our society, which contributes to symptoms and diagnoses. Several research projects have focused on what factors can combine to make a female (or male) more susceptible to developing an eating disorder. The present study attempted to examine the link between attachment theory, or specifically attachment to parents and attachment in adulthood and eating disorder symptoms. The present study also explored eating disorder symptoms and the presence of past engagement in special diets, i.e. vegan, gluten free, vegetarian, etc. The sample consisted of 66 female college students who answered questions from the following measures: Short Evaluation of Eating disorders (SEED), Attachment Styles Questionnaire (ASQ), Parental Attachment Questionnaire (PAQ), and questions related to special diet engagement. In the present study it was predicted, but not supported that there would be a relationship between insecure attachment overall and eating disordered behavior. It was also predicted, but not supported that there would be a correlation between insecure attachments with a father or the mother and eating disordered behavior. The present study also predicted that individuals who engage in special diets are more likely to have eating disordered behaviors, and those individuals who engage in special diets are more likely to have an insecure attachment. These results were mixed, and there was significance for Anorexia Nervosa total severity index (AN-TSI or behaviors that were tied to Anorexic AN behaviors) but not for Bulimia Nervosa- TSI, or bulimia linked behaviors. Suggestions for future research and clinical implications are also discussed.

Book Synopsis Identity in Adolescence 4e by : Laura Ferrer-Wreder
Download or read book Identity in Adolescence 4e written by Laura Ferrer-Wreder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised fourth edition of Identity in Adolescence: The Balance Between Self and Other presents four theoretical perspectives on identity development during adolescence and young adulthood and their practical implications for intervention. Ferrer-Wreder and Kroger consider adolescent identity development as the unique intersection of social and cultural forces in combination with individual factors that each theoretical model stresses in attempting to understand the identity formation process for contemporary adolescents. Identity in Adolescence addresses the complex question of how adolescent identity forms and develops during adolescence and young adulthood and serves as the foundation for entering adult life. The book is unique in its presentation of four selected models that address this process, along with cutting-edge research and the implications that each of these models hold for practical interventions. This new edition has been comprehensively revised, with five completely new chapters and three that have been extensively updated. New special topics are also addressed, including ethnic, sexual, and gender identity development, the role of technology in adolescent identity development, and ongoing identity development beyond adolescence. The book is essential reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying adolescent development, self and social identity within developmental psychology, social psychology and clinical psychology, as well as practitioners in the fields of child welfare and mental health services, social work, youth and community work and counselling.

Book Synopsis Exploring Evidence for a Continuum of Eating Disturbances by : Kathleen Judith Brock
Download or read book Exploring Evidence for a Continuum of Eating Disturbances written by Kathleen Judith Brock and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tested two conceptualizations regarding psychological factors associated with eating disturbances: a "continuum" perspective and a noncontinuum perspective. The study measured levels of self-objectification, parental attachment, and sociotropy-autonomy reported by 162 asymptomatic, symptomatic, and eating disordered college women. Findings provide more support for a non-continuum perspective. Specifically, a linear pattern of means was found for body surveillance, body shame, sociotropy, and solitude, with the eating disorders group differing significantly from the other two groups on 3 of these 4 variables. Categorization of EDNOS participants, who did not differ from bulimic participants on any variable, may explain discrepancies between these findings and continuum-supportive findings. Correlations among these variables are explored and research and counseling implications discussed.

Book Synopsis Not Grown Up Forever by : Ching Man Lam
Download or read book Not Grown Up Forever written by Ching Man Lam and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a Chinese conception of adolescent development, which is a model that incorporates culture and migration as two essential components of its framework. This framework is based on the notion that there is a dynamic interplay between culture and migration in Chinese immigrant families that contributes to adolescent development. In the specific migration context, indigenous Chinese notions are reinforced and intensified; these notions thus develop particular meanings and contribute distinctive themes to both the processes and outcomes of adolescent development. The Chinese conception of adolescent development the author proposes acknowledges the unique experiences of Chinese immigrants, takes account of the personal meaning of parents and adolescents, and incorporates ideas from Chinese culture.
