Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: This study utilized an explanatory correlational design to examine the relationship which exists between the predictor variables of adolescent's perception of family adaptation, cohesion, and communication, parental use of substances, adolescent age and gender and the criterion variables of adolescent behavioral intention and self-reported use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. The theoretical perspectives of the study, derived from developmental theory and the Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems viewed the adolescent stage as a period in which the entire family is challenged to balance levels of adaptation and cohesion in order to facilitate individuation and autonomy of adolescent members. Use of controlled substances by adolescents are considered behaviors which may be influenced by patterns of interaction within the family system. The sample consisted of 306 male and female high school students. Following consent from the student and at least one parent the adolescent was asked to complete four paper and pencil questionnaires. These questionnaires included the Demographic Survey; the Primary Prevention Awareness, Attitude and Usage Scale; the FACES III; and the Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale. Utilizing measures of central tendency and canonical correlation, the data analysis statistically addressed the relationships between the two variables sets. The findings indicated that balanced levels of family functioning and low usage of substances by parents has a strong relationship with decreased substance use by adolescents. Conversely, non-balanced families and those in which parents use substances more often, are families in which the adolescents are more likely to use substances. Age and gender had no significant relation to adolescent substance use or levels of family functioning. Family adaptation, cohesion and communication, and parental role modeling are variables that appear to have a significant impact upon the decisions adolescents make concerning use of alcohol, tobacco products and illicit drugs.

Book excerpt: Stress is a prevalent and concerning reality for families, and when stressors are long lasting or severe, they can lead to a crisis. The ABC-X Model of Family Stress proposes that experienced stressors lead to family outcomes of bonadaptivity, adaptivity, or maladaptivity (crisis) based on family resources and perceptions of the stressor. These two factors act as mediators of the impact of experienced stressors and affect how a family responds. Attachment Theory suggests the relationship between parents and adolescents can determine how both respond to one another under stress. Physiological theories suggest that stressors affect the mind and body in ways that lead to either poor responses or prosocial responses. The study aims were to test the ABC-X Model of Family Stress by 1) a double mediation of the relationship between experienced stressors and family functioning using the mediators of parent-adolescent relationship quality and stress perceptions, and 2) to test parent and adolescent relationship quality reports in a dyadic model with a Common Fate Model design. Using an archival secondary data set from the LONGSCAN study, these aims were tested on a sample of 769 families. Results of the model for hypothesis 1 showed that both mediation paths were significant, while the direct effect between experienced stressors and family functioning, while previously significant, was no longer significant when the mediators were added to the model, indicating mediation of both variables. Hypothesis 2 was also supported with results showing that parent and adolescent reports were both significant on the latent variable of relationship quality. These findings support the ABC-X Model of Family Stress and highlight how the family resource of parent-adolescent relationship quality is a significant factor in how families respond to stress. Clinical implications include family level interventions, especially those focused on improving attachment and relationship quality, and improving stress perception through physiological and neurological awareness.

Book excerpt: The family, that most fundamentalof human groups, is currently perceived to be changing in response to social, biological, cultural and technological developments in our postmodernsociety. While the observed changes in families have been considered by some sociologists to be evidence of adaptation and, therefore, normal, the authors of this volume, consider them maladaptive. Viewing society from the point of view of clinical psychiatry, they point to greatly increased numbers of children born to single mothers, soaring rates of divorce, a statistically confirmed increase in mental disorders, increase in reported incest, high rates of depression in younger people and escalation of the amount of reported family violence as evidence that the family, as a social institution, is in crisis and can either move toward renewed vitality or continued deterioration. Perceiving a need to obtain information about family functioning that might lead to the increased stability and well-being of this critically important type of system, Dr. John Schwab and his associates designed and camed out a research program that began with a thorough review of relevant literature beginning with LePlay’s study of 300 families in the 1850’sand including important recent statistical studies. They found that although these studies represent advances in understanding the family system, some serious problems with the research remain, one of which is confounding variables such as family function and mental or substance abuse disorders so that if a family member has a problem, such as drug abuse, the family is classifiedasdysfunctional.
