Book Synopsis Talking Sexuality: Parent-Adolescent Communication by : S. Shirley Feldman
Download or read book Talking Sexuality: Parent-Adolescent Communication written by S. Shirley Feldman and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2002-10-11 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negotiating sexuality during the adolescent years is a difficult task that can result in health-compromising outcomes if poor decisions are made. Experts, parents, and teens all believe that parents have an important role in providing sex education to their children and that such communication has the potential to help adolescents make good sexual decisions. However, parents find the task daunting; they often feel ill equipped, and teenagers feel uncomfortable and suspect parents of prying into their private lives. The last decade has witnessed important growth in research on family communications about sex and sexuality. This volume critically examines the assumption that parental communication plays an important role in helping children make good sexual decisions and act on them. It expands on earlier reviews by proposing a theoretical framework in a field that has largely been notable for its atheoretical approach, by providing methodological alternatives, by going beyond the expert-novice perspective to address communication from the young person s point of view, and by evaluating interventions designed to help parents become better communicators about this difficult, sensitive, and complex topic. It also presents new empirical work on the neglected topics of fathers involvement in sex-related communications with their children and teen-initiated communications by gay youth as they inform their parents about their sexual orientation. This is the 97th issue of the Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality in Adolescence: The Digital Generation provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of research and theory about adolescent sexuality in today’s world. The book examines biological, social and health-related approaches and reviews qualitative and quantitative research from psychology, sociology, epidemiology and medicine, emphasising the interplay between perspectives and privileging the voices of young people as they discuss the joys and pains of sexual awakening. The focus is on understanding healthy sexual development and its many variations, but problems and issues arising as young people make their journey to adult sexuality are also considered. The book presents global research on many key issues of our time, including the impact of media and technology on adolescent sexuality, changes in adolescent sexual behaviors and beliefs, sexual risk taking, sex education, and teen pregnancy and abortion. This fully revised and updated third edition of Sexuality in Adolescence also addresses the crucial issues of sexual diversity, sexual safety and sexual communication, including coercion, peer pressure and double standards. In Sexuality in Adolescence: The Digital Generation, the authors aim to promote sexual wellbeing, and argue for the importance of the adolescent period as a time for engendering healthy sexual attitudes and practices. This book will be valuable reading for students in the social, behavioural and health sciences who are interested in adolescent development and the topic of sexuality, as well as for professionals working with young people and families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scientific theory is essential to research on sexuality and sexual experiences in emerging adulthood. Theory serves a number of important functions for research, including prediction and explanation. Research has often utilized theory to help enhance what we know about sexuality among those in the developmental period of emerging adulthood. In this chapter we offer a primer on theories that have been used regularly when studying sex and relationships using emerging adult samples, including Life Course Development Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, Social Exchange Theory, and The Theory of Sexual Possible Selves. At the conclusion of our discussion of these theories and their role in guiding research and explaining findings on sex and sexuality, we offer theoretical directions to enhance the rigor of the use of theory in future research on sexual experiences among emerging adults"--

This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic relationship formation and the engagement in sexual behaviors are normative and salient developmental tasks for adolescents and young adults. These developmental tasks are increasingly viewed from an ecological perspective, thus as strongly embedded in different social contexts, including the proximal social domains of parents, peers, and partners. This volume brings together seven recent empirical studies on adolescents’ and young adults’ romantic relationships and sexuality in the context of relationships with parents, peers, and partners. In this editorial introduction, we describe two important recent changes in the theoretical perspectives on emerging romantic relationships and sexual activity: from risky behaviors to normative tasks, and from individual to contextualized processes. We then discuss recent advances in empirical research on romantic relationships and sexuality of adolescents and young adults. After that, we review the seven studies in this volume, and discuss the contributions of these studies to the existing literature. Finally, we discuss directions for future research regarding how to further incorporate the interrelational perspective in empirical research on these topics, and how to bridge the gap between the research fields on romantic relationships and sexuality. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Developmental Psychology.
Book Synopsis The Relationship Between Sexuality-based Parent-adolescent Communication and Overall Sexual Health Among Selected University Students by : Joseph D. Visker
Download or read book The Relationship Between Sexuality-based Parent-adolescent Communication and Overall Sexual Health Among Selected University Students written by Joseph D. Visker and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parents and/or appropriate adult guardians have been shown to be indispensable in fostering the sexuality-related progression of their children. Part of helping young people understand human sexuality involves parents discussing sexuality-related issues with their children. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between selected dimensions of communication and overall sexual health among selected undergraduate students at a large, mid-western university. Analyses showed no relationship or, at best, a minute relationship between selected communication variables and components of overall sexual health. Further, sexuality-based communication between parents and children was found to be low and parents were not found to be the primary resource of sexuality-related information.
Book Synopsis Promoting Parent-early Adolescent Sexual Communication with a Smartphone Application by : Jing You
Download or read book Promoting Parent-early Adolescent Sexual Communication with a Smartphone Application written by Jing You and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent sexual education and health promotions have emphasized the importance of parent-child sexual communication in healthy sexual development of youth. By using effective parent-adolescent sexual communication, parents can provide their adolescent children with more accurate knowledge about sexuality and help them shape healthy sexual attitudes that might lead to wise decision-making during adolescence. In addition, effective parent-adolescent sexual communication serves as an influential factor in buffering adolescents' risky sexual behaviors. However, ineffective parent-adolescent sexual communication is likely prevalent among families as parents might face many barriers in initiating and discussing sexuality-related topics. Limited or no sexual communication may significantly undermine parents' potential to be optimal influencers of their adolescent's healthy sexual development. The increasing usage of smartphones and mobile apps among the U.S. adults gives unprecedented opportunities to deliver parent-based adolescent sexual health interventions to a wider and more diverse population. Guided by research, as well as Urie Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory of human development, this report provides a research-based foundation on which to build a smartphone app, Parent Sex Talk 12-14, providing sexual health-related materials to parents of early adolescents aged 12- to 14-years-old to strengthen parent-early adolescent sexual communication.

Book Synopsis The Promise of Adolescence by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book The Promise of Adolescence written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.
