Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians too often disregard the depth and thoughtfulness of Jewish, Muslim, and Middle Eastern Christian concepts of justice. To fill this lack, this book explores the rich development of justice within each Abrahamic faith as it relates specifically to the Palestinian/Israeli context. From a uniquely Palestinian Christian perspective, this book offers a theological framework through the concept of reconciling justice to facilitate better understanding for multiethnic, political, and religious encounters as a prophetic imagination for peace and reconciliation in the region.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In her stunning debut, the creator of Black Liturgies weaves stories from three generations of her family alongside contemplative reflections to discover the “necessary rituals” that connect us with our belonging, dignity, and liberation. “This is the kind of book that makes you different when you’re done.”—Ashley C. Ford, New York Times bestselling author of Somebody’s Daughter “Reaches deep beneath the surface of words unspoken, wounds unhealed, and secrets untempered to break them open in order for fresh light to break through.”—Morgan Jerkins, New York Times bestselling author of This Will Be My Undoing and Caul Baby ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Root, Library Journal “From the womb, we must repeat with regularity that to love ourselves is to survive. I believe that is what my father wanted for me and knew I would so desperately need: a tool for survival, the truth of my dignity named like a mercy new each morning.” So writes Cole Arthur Riley in her unforgettable book of stories and reflections on discovering the sacred in her skin. In these deeply transporting pages, Arthur Riley reflects on the stories of her grandmother and father, and how they revealed to her an embodied, dignity-affirming spirituality, not only in what they believed but in the act of living itself. Writing memorably of her own childhood and coming to self, Arthur Riley boldly explores some of the most urgent questions of life and faith: How can spirituality not silence the body, but instead allow it to come alive? How do we honor, lament, and heal from the stories we inherit? How can we find peace in a world overtaken with dislocation, noise, and unrest? In this indelible work of contemplative storytelling, Arthur Riley invites us to descend into our own stories, examine our capacity to rest, wonder, joy, rage, and repair, and find that our humanity is not an enemy to faith but evidence of it. At once a compelling spiritual meditation, a powerful intergenerational account, and a tender coming-of-age narrative, This Here Flesh speaks potently to anyone who suspects that our stories might have something to say to us.

Book excerpt: Based on sound biblical, theological, and liturgical grounding, Becoming a Justice Seeking Congregation offers practical know-how strategies from McElvaney's ministry and from the experiences of others addressing justice issues in a variety of settings. Idealism and realism are combined in a "rubber hits the road" local church kind of justice discernment and discovery. Designed as an ecumenical study guide for local congregations, clergy groups, and seminarians, Becoming a Justice Seeking Congregation addresses the why, what, where, and how questions related to practicing justice. It provides a fresh invitation for the church to work for systemic change in the world. Advance praise for Becoming a Justice Seeking Congregation "Bill McElvaney is a reliable and sure-footed guide who traces out the deep and urgent connections between faith and social reality. In this book he brings both his long years of reflective study and his heart filled with passion to the hard issues facing faith. Readers will surely feel both assured and summoned by his words." -Walter Brueggemann, Emeritus Professor of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia "For forty years I have witnessed and appreciated Bill McElvaney's consistent commitment to the struggle for social justice and peace. His faithful track record in this challenging area of ministry gives him the practical and theological authority to write this book." -Zan W. Holmes, Jr., Pastor emeritus, St. Luke Community United Methodist Church, Dallas, Texas

Book excerpt: “A marvel of succinctness, this presentation is one of the best I have seen for initial direction in the faith once delivered to the Fathers.” —Dr. Paige Patterson Ted Rivera unpacks the mystery of God’s will with a simple yet profound look at what Jesus called the two greatest commandments: loving God and loving others. Filled with examples drawn from everyday life, Rivera’s book is practical and wise, a welcome primer for any student of the Bible wanting to deepen their understanding of how to follow Jesus rightly. In the end, Rivera concludes, Jesus isn’t looking merely for consistency in obedience but for obedience in love. Indeed, all our good deeds “are utterly worthless if they are disconnected from a heart that beats not only with love for our God, but also with love for our fellow human beings.” The Heart of Love urges readers toward a deepened faith and a greater imitation of the God who is love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mad Professor of Babeldu is a work of fiction with an eccentric professor as its major character. Sitting alone in his farmhouse, Professor Philjez, in a profound and sometimes comic manner, talks on a variety of issues from politics to religion, economics, culture, science, and a myriad of other issues. This book no doubt will resonate with many readers because of its unusual character and profound ideas. Bizarre, comical, shocking, profound, and perhaps blasphemous are all adjectives aptly descriptive of The Mad Professor of Babeldu. Driven by Professor Philjez, its eccentric major character, this book despairs and inspires, saddens and excites, frightens and soothes, sobers and intoxicates a reader. It is a mixed grille. It is a jolly, hearty party of ideas that cannot fail to go away with gold medals in any Olympic contest of ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetoric ad Social Justice in Isaiah applies a literary methodology to the book of Isaiah in order critically to explore the nature and sources of the social justice encoded in the world created by the text. After a close reading of Isaiah 1: 16 & 17, Gray establishes grounds for a trajectory to Isaiah 58, preparatory to examining if it offers a deepening of the concept of social justice in the Isaianic corpus. Gray raises the issue of divine reliability to assess the impact on the theme of social justice of the rhetoric of universal punishment by the divine/prophetic voice. He evaluates the ways the stark Isaianic dichotomy between reliance on God and anything of human origin is affected by trust in God being destabilized: if trust in God is demonstrated to be difficult on account of legitimate doubts about divine justice, then the way is opened for retaining an active human role in the search for justice. Gray demonstrates the ways that social justice attains primacy in Isaiah, the ways that humanity if given a role in pursuing social justice, and the ways that Isaiah 58 impinges upon the idea of social justice within the book as a whole.
