Book excerpt: The textbook 'Parasitology in Veterinary Medicine' is based on 'Lehrbuch der Parasitologie für die Tiermedizin' (3rd ed.), published in 2013 by Enke, Germany. Wageningen Academic Publishers presents a revised edition in English, suited both for basic and advanced studies and as reference book for the veterinary practice. Although focused on the European situation, the book also deals with important parasitic diseases occurring in other regions. The main part is organized by parasite groups (protozoa, helminths, arthropoda, etc.). It provides information on the parasites' biology, epidemiology, immunology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis, therapy and control. Summaries allow for a quick overview.Another part is arranged according to animal species (cattle, sheep and goats, pigs, horses, dogs and cats, rabbits, poultry, bees). It contains tables listing the parasites of the organ systems and showing antiparasitic drugs. Furthermore, practical instructions on the control of parasitic diseases are given.Further chapters deal with general parasitology, zoonoses, parasites in food, diagnostic procedures, and essentials of therapy and control of parasitoses. A detailed glossary with etymological notes is intended for a better understanding of parasitological terms. The book contains numerous tables and is illustrated with 421 figures, including many instructive drawings of parasite life cycles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are books available dealing with canine parasitology, there is at present no book detailing parasites that offers clinical information specific to felines. Cats differ significantly from dogs in their parasitic infections and infestations. Although dogs and cats do share a few parasites, the vast majority of the parasites of these pets are specific to either cats or dogs, not to both. This must-have reference offers an in-depth examination of feline parasites. Topics covered include parasite identification, history, geographic distribution, pathogeneisis, epidemiology, zoonosis, diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention. Because of the immense worldwide popularity of cats and due to the amount of travel undertaken by cats and their owners, the authors have produced a book that is international in scope. Consequently, this exhaustive reference has strong appeal to practitioners and veterinary parasitologists in North America and around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parasites and parasitic morbidity and/or disease seem to be a birth right of the tropics. This is a sequel to greaterbiodiversity fragmented in relation to biogeography and climatic shifts congenial to nocturnal enemies of humans, like mosquitoes. In fact in some cases parasite strategies have thwarted attempts of the scientific community toeradicate them. The best example running its course now is any kind of flu. Flu is no simple single strain strategy. At the base of parasitic diseases, man has recognized a dichotomy namely, animal diseases and diseases of man butthere may be links between humans and animal (zoonoses). We owe a great deal to the British Empire in the expansion of knowledge of tropical diseases especially ofpeninsular India with more or less warm climate plenty of room for growth of intermediate host like Anopheles(malaria), Culex (filaria) and Aedes (dengue). The School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at London is especiallyinterested in this direction. We have at the present time many insitutions in India dealing with public health problems.Schools of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta, several laboratories of preventive medicine and more recently immunologylaboratories. Likewise, there has been a growth of institutions dealing with veterinary medicine and animal health. We are just begining to understand what is known as zoonoses. That is parasites which normally infect and developin animals can under certain circumstances infect humans and thrive with as much ease. India can now boast ofbeing free of smallpox and plague but bad hygienic conditions are not allowing the control of malaria, dengue, filaria, typhoid, leprosy, etc. Dilution of efforts because of population explosion is the cause. A multiprolongedattack 1. Treatment, 2. Eradication of intermediate hosts (like mosquitoes) 3. Preventive measures (Prophylaxis)specific to each parasitic infection becomes a must, education is necessary. The aim of the present books is to provide a brief but reasonably comprehensive information to the medicalstudent as well as students of medical laboratory techniques. To be a comprehensive parasitologist of some worthand meaning the persent book has been designed. Equal emphasis is given to microbes and the protozoan andmetazoan parasites. Two pertinent remarks can be quoted. Stoll 1947” had said that at any army center the medicalorricer never heard of bancroftian filariasis (the disease) while soldiers saw it with dismay elephantiasis (thesymptom) Philip 1987 had said that there is always some thing new under the parasitological sun.

The third edition of this, one of Springer’s renowned and authoritative Major Reference Works, contributes to these goals in several ways. First, the number of entries has been increased by about 30%. Secondly the content has been improved even more by adding additional tables and figures. Thirdly, the extensive linking between definitions and essays facilitates information within a minimum of time. More than 40 international contributors, who are well known specialists in their fields, give a comprehensive review of all parasites and therapeutic strategies in veterinarian and human parasitology.
