Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synopsis, in addition to providing a descriptive analysis of the parasites infecting fish in the Great Lakes, should provide a foundation for future studies. The effects of parasites on their fish hosts are often underestimated, unappreciated, and ignored by many investigators. In addition, the occurrence and effect of non-native parasite species on exotic and endemic fishes has been little studied. Aquatic parasitologists along with fish-health specialists, fisheries biologists and other investigators should take a holistic approach to study each Great Lake. Parasites are major players in the biology of fishes and more research into their role on the Great Lakes ecosystem is needed. It is hoped that this synopsis will stimulate renewed interest in current and future fish-parasite research."--Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide arranges information on trematode parasites of Canadian fishes by subclass (Aspidogastrea and Digenea), order, superfamily, family, subfamily, and genera. No descriptions are included for individual species because of the large number of taxa involved, but illustrations of members of each genus are provided. Data supplied in the guide include scientific name, synonyms, the position or organ in the fish where the parasite has been reported, hosts, distribution in Canadian waters, authors responsible for the published records of a particular parasite, and comments on the systematics, nomenclature, records, or other aspects of the biology of the parasite. Diagnoses are presented for all taxa down to generic level, and keys are included down to the species level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health of Great Lakes coregonids is continuously monitored for the spread of pathogens because of their economic importance. An infectious disease and parasite survey was conducted to build on previous data collected in the past but to also examine other factors that may affect distribution of pathogens in Great Lakes lake whitefish, round whitefish, and bloater populations. Coregonids (n=394) were collected from 3-4 regions in Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Superior and screened for target pathogens according to the procedures outlined in the AFS Blue Book Fish Health Section Inspection Manual. Parasite and age data were collected from a sub-sample (n = 2-30) of each fish species from each region sampled. No target viral pathogens were detected and one bacterial pathogen was detected in a lake whitefish from Western Lake Superior. A total of7,404 parasites were recovered representing 12 genera. Prevalence of infection ranged from 50% to 90% in each host species. Results indicate that host age and condition factor do not appear to influence the presence or absence of parasite communities of coregonids in the Great Lakes.

[This volume] has been and will continue to be a major force advancing freshwater fish parasitology."—Ernest H. Williams Jr., from the ForewordThis thoroughly revised and updated edition of a classic reference work is the definitive guide to the identification of the parasites of freshwater fishes of North America. The book provides information on public health concerns about fish parasites, the methods used to examine fish for parasites, and those parasites found only in very selective organs or tissues. It lists the known species of each genus, along with reference citations that enable readers to find literature pertinent to species identification, life cycles, and in some cases, control. In the heart of the book, each chapter opens with a description of a phylum and its relevant families and genera, followed by a species list for those genera. Drawings illustrate a representative of each genus, and are supplemented by photographic examples. Many new parasites of North American freshwater fishes have been discovered since the publication of the first edition thirty years ago. For this new edition, the author has added new species accounts and revised the taxonomy, expanded descriptions and discussion of the most important fish parasites, provided a glossary to aid nonspecialists, and updated the reference list through 1992. The volume features twice as many illustrations as the first edition, including the addition of 33 color photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information on the parasites of Canadian fishes published between the years 1978 and 1993, inclusive, is assembled as Parasite-Host and Host-Parasite lists. The 925 named species of parasites are reported on 292 species of Canadian fishes. The Parasite-Host list is organized on a taxonomic basis and identifies for each species its habitat (freshwater, marine, or brackish), site of occurence in its host(s), species host(s), known geographic distribution within Canadian waters, and the published source for each host and localty record. The Host-Parasite list is organized according to the taxonomy of the hosts and is accompanied by data on the known Canadian distribution of the parasites. For both the Parasite-Host and Host-Parasite lists, a "Remarks" section containing explanatory comments concerning systematics, nomenclature, and notes on other specific items is included as warranted. In addition to listing the cited references, as supplentary list of references is included to cover other Canadian literature on fish parasites.

Book excerpt: This publication provides an historical review and evaluation of documented ecological effects associated with salmonine introductions to the Laurentian Great Lakes. The introduction of salmonines to the Great Lakes date back to the 1870s, when natural populations of native salmonines in the Great Lakes were in severe decline. Using established evaluation protocols, it was determined that there is evidence of significant ecological effects in six different categories: (1) diseases and parasites, (2) predation on native species, (3) competition for limiting resources, (4) genetic alteration, (5) environmental alteration and (6) community alteration. Taken together, this body of evidence supports the conclusion that the ongoing introduction of non-native salmonines poses an ecologically-significant risk to the Great Lakes ecosystem and its native organisms, and that the introductions should be terminated.
